To wish films at the cinema had an interval?

Going to see Skyfall tomorrow with DH and really looking forward to it, but - the running time is 143 minutes. AIBU to think it would be nice to have an interval for 15-20 mins for drink/snack/comfort break?

There used to be intervals at the cinema (showing my age now!); they have them at the theatre, much more civilised IMHO. Granted many films are shorter than 143 minutes, so possibly an interval not strictly necessary, but some are not - and although I'm sure i will love it - if the reviews are right - it does seem a bit of a marathon. Of course it's worth it for Daniel Craig but with some other long films I can't help but think I might as well wait for them to come on to DVD and watch them at leisure.....

It would stop you becoming involved in the film by breaking your trance. That's what I love about the cinema.

They still have an interval at one of our local cinemas. Somebody then comes out to sell ice creams too. We went to see 'Curse of the Were Rabbit' and a man got on the stage in the interval and played 'Run rabbit, run rabbit, run run run' on the organ!

Oh god no. Everyone would pile into the toilet anyway, and there wouldn't be enough for everyone.

You don't need to go in 'til 5 minutes before it starts (you'll have allocated seats whether you book them or not because it's so popular) and you can go to the toilet first.

I really didn't see why anyone would need to go during it. Plenty of people did, I was in an end seat and every two minutes someone walked past or needed me to get out of my seat, but surely people don't go to the toilet every two hours at home?!

Anyway, intervals would suck. You need to concentrate or you'd miss things.

If there had been an interval during Skyfall I'd have left and gone home.

I remember breaks in films. They called them intermissions rather than intervals weren't they?

So there did used to be intervals at cinema! I have always sworn there used to be when I was little but DH insisted the memory of the theatre had merged because there never was. So thanks for that one! Anywayy yanbu, I hate missing some film when I need to pee

I remember when Titanic came out and it had an interval, which was good as i was bursting for the loo.
When i went to India, i saw a foreign film, no subtitles, no idea what was going on, laughed when everyone else laughed type thing. Was very confused when 'it ended' mid scene after an hr but it was a toilet break

Nah that would be terrible. I've been to one cinema that had an intermission (in the depths of north wales) which was actually a welcome relief because the film was rubbish, but during a good film? No thanks!

Saturday afternoon kids matinee in the 70s - during the interval they used to play songs from the hit parade and we all got to dance on the stage - what's not to like?

I am normally the most easily distracted person, but I sat through 2 and half hours of Skyfall, twice, without getting twitchy.

YANBU. I was desperate for the loo for the last half hour of Skyfall but didn't want to go out and miss anything as I was really enjoying it.

There is now an app you can get (don't know its name) that will tell you exactly when to go to the loo during a film, and what you missed while you were peeing. It's about the best app I've EVER heard of. It hasn't caught up with Skyfall yet, but I went soon after Albert Finney (with a beard) appears and didn't miss much apparently (I was very very quick, though!)

They do family film nights at our village hall and they do an interval selling hotdogs and ice creams and the bar is open too. I've not been to the cinema in years .

You missed precious minutes of Daniel Craig's deliciousness. Mad.

The intervals were the BEST thing about going to the cinema "in my day"
everyone squishing up at the tiny sweet counter for bon bons, the squishing for bon bons helped if your date was v shy

Yes they should for long films I agree!
Our local cinema does no seat reservations even on first night so if you don't want to be in the front row you have to get in the queue pretty early and any excuse for ice cream

I just wish they'd drop all the trailers, then DD2 perhaps, wouldn't want to go to the loo 15min from the end of everything

I love the trailers, if you want to avoid em just add 20 mins to the start time

There's a cinema near us which does intermissions. An organ rises up from the stage and a bloke plays it while intermission is ongoing. There is a woman up the front with a tray selling ice creams and chocolate.
