to not bathe my nearly 2-year old dd every day?

that's it really. She hates it, I work full time, sometimes it just doesn't happen. Is there anything wrong with only bathing a child every other day?

Don't think I have hardly ever bathed my dd (now 6), every day. She has a bath 3 times a week. Has always been that way IIRC. They hardly get smelley like adults and teens, and every day would be far to harsh on her skin imo. I bathed her on Monday evening, so her next bath will be Thursday evening, then Sunday evening.

Mintyy · 13/11/2012 22:10

As I said earlier in the thread, it is obviously fine not to bathe a baby or child every night, but the other extreme of once a week and a baby wipe on the bum is inadequate imo.

Am also failing to see why working full time has anything to do with bathing frequency?

ShallIJustShutUpThen · 13/11/2012 22:24

Inadequate in what way? They get a wash, just not a bath. They don't get very dirty imo.

quesadilla · 13/11/2012 22:43

Mintyy: The full time thing is just that I don't get back with her until nearly 7 at night and she goes to bed around 8. At least half of that last hour is taken up with bedtime-related faffing and because she isn't a great fan of the bath it just feels like another chore. And I'd rather be watching In The Night Garden :)

Mine are now 9 and 11, they like to shower daily because they do a lot of sport, but DD1 has eczema and does need to moisturise afterwards.

We still have the occasional weekend when they don't shower on Saturday night because the day has been too bloody busy, and no-one has died of the stench yet.

Mintyy working full time has everything to do with it - if you get home late and are trying to keep to a sensible bedtime, there's only a very small time slot for evening meal, wash, bed. And it would be nice not to spend all that time listening to the screaming. I wouldn't go once a week, but every other day would be fine.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 13/11/2012 22:53

You must have very clean babies! Mine lo

TwelveLeggedWalk · 13/11/2012 22:54

Look like theyve been coal mining, then dipped in honey before rolling in the dogs bed, with a subtle base cost of the mornings porridge and a nice top note if pesto with yoghurt. The bath is actually dirty after they get out!

TwelveLeggedWalk · 13/11/2012 22:55

Base coat.. Sodding phone!

dontcallmehon · 13/11/2012 22:56

That sounds fine. Mine don't bath everyday. It's not good for delicate skin IMO.

VisualiseAHorse · 13/11/2012 23:00

I just shower my baby. So much easier.

VisualiseAHorse · 13/11/2012 23:02

Sorry, pressed go too quickly.

Every 3 days or so. Have you tried a shower with your DD?

FidgetPie · 13/11/2012 23:02

My DD (2.5) gets a wash every other day - mainly because her skin would get very dry but also we don't bother on her nursery days as she gets home quite late and it would be a bit of a rush to fit in.

myfirstkitchen · 13/11/2012 23:23

yanbu

sweat glands dont start working properly until puberty!

gobbin · 13/11/2012 23:37

Yeah twice a week Weds and Sun my boy got a bath. Never stuck anything in his ears either except his own little finger and never had ear infections and rarely a cold. As long as he wasn't obviously dirty, didn't smell and his hands/face got a wipe morn n night we didn't sweat the washimg thing.

Moominsarescary · 13/11/2012 23:41

twelve I was thinking the same.

No way could I get away with a couple of times a week ds3 19 months has one most days to get all the food out his hair

flow4 · 13/11/2012 23:46

Kids got bathed once a week when I was a kid. I see this modern habit of bathing kids daily as a bit bonkers, and part of a more general penchant for over-consumption.

MumofWombat · 13/11/2012 23:47

We've never bathed once a day, DSs first bath was at three weeks old, he spent that time in NICU hooked up to machines so could only be wiped down, and when the nurse should us how to bath him she advised that is much better for his skin not to get into the habit of a bath a day. So we go for about 3 times a week, unless food and play is particularly messy!

Moomins - ever thought of using a shower cap on your DS at mealtimes?! Wink Grin

R2PeePoo · 13/11/2012 23:49

YANBU, my two get bathed three times a week and thats only because they love baths and beg me for them. I have to cover them in moisturiser afterwards though otherwise they scratch all night.

I remember as a child in the 80's that I got a bath on Thursday nights and Sunday nights.

Shodan · 14/11/2012 00:00

I'm glad of this thread because I was wondering if I was being a bit lax with ds2's baths. He has one every other day but has been known to go an extra day without.

I, however, have a bath every day and always have done. Thinking back, I wonder how many of my siblings had a bath every day- there were six of us and only one bathroom! I know at least two of my brothers bath daily, so I'd guess they did then too... must ask one day!

grovel · 14/11/2012 00:12

YANBU. We have all got bedtime rituals mixed up with being clean (enough). If a bath is fun and is part of bedtime-great. I would not though swap it for reading together time.

Pennybubbly · 14/11/2012 00:28

Meh, I shower my 2 DCs (4 and 7) every day.
Where we live it gets extremely hot and humid for at least 4 months of the year - it would be highly unpleasant for them not to be showered every day - including hairwash. When it gets a bit colder, I'll switch to baths instead, but tbh, showers are quicker and less hassle. DD has long hair so now it's cooler, I wash it 3/4 times a week. DS has short hair, and he sweats like a monster, so his is washed daily.
Both have beautiful soft skin and hair Wink

Moominsarescary · 14/11/2012 02:34

flow not a bad idea but he won't even keep a hat on his head! Luckily he loves the bath and toddles off happily to have one with his brother or dad which gives me a chance to clean the food off the floor, cupboards, Walls

amarylisnightandday · 14/11/2012 02:59

When I was working it was every 2/3 days. Yanbu. Dd was often too tired from nursery. If I thought she was real grubby is strip wash her with a flannel before bed and not give it much thought.
Also if we went swimming dd gets showered with shampoo etc in the showers - I'm not washing her twice!!!
