AIBU?

to think the song Imagine is not only a dreadful dirge, but is also complete and unworkable twaddle

Just heard it on the radio. I don't know why so many people like this song, and go on and on about its sentiments. But there is no tune to speak of, and the lyrics are shite.

^"Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky"^

Well I don't need to imagine that. There's no evidence that there's a heaven above us and a hell lurking under our feet, as far as I'm concerned. Even a lot of Christians don't believe heaven and hell are literally and physically above and below us.

"Imagine all the people living for today"

So nobody bothers to work, save, make plans for the future, provisions for old age, build anything over the long term, even preserve food for the winter. Just get up and do whatever you fancy for the day? Hmm

"^Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace^"

OK, so if we're going to abolish countries, what are we going to replace them with. There needs to be some sort of political and administrative framework, otherwise we'll live in total anarchy with no taxes, no education, no welfare state, no police - a bit like that telly programme Survivors, where they're all running round the country brandishing guns and nicking stuff off each other. Religion, I know, has been "done to death" on MN. Personally I think everyone can believe what they like, and religion can be a comfort to many, as long as it doesn't impact on others. Anyway, how can you ban religion? You can't change the way people think. It's a bit 1984.

Yes, I can see that national identity and religions can cause wars, but abolishing them is not practical.

"^Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world^"

So how are we going to manage this no possessions business? Does that mean that anyone can just help themselves to anything they fancy. Someone can just help themselves to food I've grown in my garden, rip the clothes off my back and wear them because they don't "belong" to me or just decide to move into my house because they don't fancy their own place any more. If there are no rights of possession then everyone might end up squabbling over stuff and then we'll all go hungry.
Hopefully if he's talking about a "brotherhood of man", most of this won't apply to women.

"^You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one^"

Really? There are other people who actually think this.

YANBU
I've always hated this song too. And his and Yoko's smug faces on the video. I love the Beatles and pretty much hate everything they did individually. Shame.

With you LRD on "and there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas" - that's always got me too, because a pretty sprinkling of snow would really cheer you up in a famine Hmm

Have to say though I have always liked Imagine - because it is quite radical to many people to think of throwing out religion and that perhaps we wouldn't be any worse off without it. So YABU Grin

But I don't think I've thought it all through as thoroughly as you MardyBra ......

Actually I don't have a problem with throwing out the religion part as that wouldn't really affect me. It's the countries and the possessions bit that would hurt.

Yo listen up, here's a story About a little guy that lives in a blue world And all day and all night And everything he sees Is just blue like him Inside and outside

Blue his house With a blue little window And a blue corvette And everything is blue for him And his self And everybody around 'Cause he ain't got nobody to listen

I'm blue, da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die [repeat]

I have a blue house with a blue window Blue is the color of all that I wear Blue are the streets and all the trees are too I have a girlfriend and she is so blue

Blue are the people here that walk around Blue like my corvette, it's standing outside Blue are the words I say and what I think Blue are the feelings that live inside me

I'm blue, da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die Da ba de, da ba die [repeat]

It's better then those lyrics! Hope every one doesn't get it stuck in their heads Grin

I quite like Hey Jude.

Or at least I did when Macca still had the ability to hold a tune.

MardyBra - the mental barriers exist, but only in our minds, they are a creation of modern society. Lennon was pontificating that we would be better off without them.

Btw, songs are tuneful ditties, they are not important at all, but I do enjoy Lennon's and Dylan's work because they tried to describe the human experience rather than just trying to sell records.

At least the blue song is obviously nonsense.
The problem with Imagine is that some people seem to think it is a workable proposition .

MardyBra

I am with you all the way, the song imagine is the most overrated song of all time. ANd the lyrics meaningless twaddle.

And he was fooling himself if he thought an absence of religion would lead to peace - men will always have power struggles over something or other and fight over it.

Oh, John Lennon I seem to recall had rather a lot of posessions. And made rather a lot of money warbling on about people not having any....

And I'm saying we wouldn't.

"Btw, songs are tuneful ditties" Thanks for explaining that to me.

So what if Jon Lennon was rich?

The song is a song, not a statement of his way of life!

Maybe you lot should try imagining some of the things in the song, go on "I wonder if you can". Its not nonsensical twaddle, it is very simplistic, but really what he sings is basically the communist ideal, or that of Jesus' teachings - without the religious bit

Yes I agree OP

There is a fab Elvis Costello song - which doesn't make sense either - that has a great couple of lines:

Was it a millionaire who sang "Imagine no possessions?"
A poor little schoolboy saying "We don't need no lessons"

Agree it's a big pile of steaming turd.

And speaking of turd, next time I do one I'm going to present it to DH and tell him "I did it for you" in a Bryan Adams stylee
