... mate, hun.babe, bud, and cheers mate/bud does my head in aswell.I just wish they would call me by my name .I don't like it when they they call me those things it gets on my nerves. If i wanted to be called by one of those names i would change my name to one of like Buddy Holly might have done.
Your thoughts please ?

Theres a woman if the shop near here who calls me "little girl". Which I find creepy and odd. She says "here you go little girl" or "im just about to serve the little girl".
I am nearly 30...

MummyPig24 · 13/11/2012 12:57

I hate being called "mate". Urgh, I am not your mate! I also despise "hun", it has such a fake ring to it.

Tweasels · 13/11/2012 13:00

But OP, don't you like calling people "dude"?

What's the difference?

peeriebear · 13/11/2012 13:05

DH calls people all kinds of things ie Chief, Fella etc. He says it is due to being a delivery driver to building sites and other manly environs. Lots of matey banter. I still went Hmm when he called the McDonalds server "big stuff" though HmmHmm

TheReturnOfBridezilla · 13/11/2012 13:07

Big stuff Grin

I don't like "mate" either. Or "love".

bluecheesedip · 13/11/2012 13:08

I have a colleague who calls everyone 'mate' or 'pal'. Male, female, client, colleague, friend - doesn't matter. I wince every time I hear it - sounds so unprofessional too.

Fakebook · 13/11/2012 13:09

I hate being called "love" or "darlin'" by strange men. It's so unnecessary. They can easily say "madam" or "miss". It mostly happens at the fruit market in our city.

Whodyanickabollockoff · 13/11/2012 13:09

Tweasles yes this is correct i will call people dudes when i enter a chat room full of those types of people(you get me bruv).Dudes is different somehow.tbh i don't really say dudes that much i was just trying to fit in tbh .Is that wrong ?Grin

tangofan · 13/11/2012 13:12

That's nothing - come to Bristol and complete strangers will refer to you as "my lover". Even women. Whaaaaat?!! Confused

Quiet a few people like to say 'Boss' when they refer to somebody as in 'Ok Boss' I don't mind that one so much because it makes me feel special Grin

Whatnowffs · 13/11/2012 13:16

I can't be doing with it either, properly winds me up.

DP is a builder and never calls anyone mate/luv etc because he knows how much it irks me, however he does insist on calling people by their names, over and over - like two or three times in a short exchange. I'm not sure if that isn't worse to be honest.

Whatnowffs · 13/11/2012 13:17

A guy called me "darling" on a job interview, it made me cringe and was part of the reason that i turned the job down. Yuck.

bluecheesedip · 13/11/2012 13:18

Yep, 'my lover' is totally different. Don't mind that at all Grin

Whodyanickabollockoff · 13/11/2012 13:19

he sounds like a bloke that might say alright 'Sweetheart'

OP posts:
Whodyanickabollockoff · 13/11/2012 13:20

I notice still quiet a few strangers will still use the word 'darling ' to strangers (in a shop lets say) .Apparently that's bang out of order

OP posts:
Badvoc · 13/11/2012 13:21

I don't mind it tbh.
I get called variously:
Love
Sweetheart
Me duck (any midlands people will recognise this!)
Pet
Makes me :)

butisthismyname · 13/11/2012 13:24

My DH ( much as I adore the man) insists on shortening peopels names - so Bernie becomes Bern, Trevor, Trev etc. I'm always so relived when someone introduces themselves as, say, Rob, because they would become Rob within seconds. It really annoys me!

MummyPig24 · 13/11/2012 13:25

I love "my lover". Hehe.

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 13/11/2012 13:27

Some of my friends call each other Chick. They are in their thirties WTF?
If anyone called me Chick I would growl at them Grin

Feminine · 13/11/2012 13:28

I don't like being called "mate" by males. Confused

or females actually, although I don't think that has ever happened?

MayTheOddsBeEverInYourFavour · 13/11/2012 13:28

I prefer a lot of those to dude Grin

FreudiansSlipper · 13/11/2012 13:28

depends on the situation if it is in a patronising way no I do not like it more often it is not and I am not bothered at all

I think there is also a little bit of snobbery going on for some love, darling is the terminology used for those that have not yet reached middle class or maybe they have and have no desire to change the way they talk

Whodyanickabollockoff · 13/11/2012 13:34

I notice alot of people still make the mistake usually older generation this and they don't realize they are doing anything wrong by refering to a black person as a coloured person then thinking they are being really politically incorrect, the amount of time i've pulled people up on that and put them right(cos if you don't know that was the expression used in the eighties i do believe . People make that mistake or say something like that Indian man not realizing they should be saying Asain.Doh!
Finally i just wanna have a little bit of moan about people who say 'VERY' unique. You can not have something which is VERY unique because it is either unique or it is not.

OP posts:
Whodyanickabollockoff · 13/11/2012 13:38

**politically correct (sorry)
