Your thoughts please ?

Why can't you call somebody Indian?

I always do.

Proper lol at 'big stuff'. That is Grin

Another one for 'my lover' and a lot of colleagues use 'me babber' (no clue what that means but I like it). We get 'pal' a lot here, which makes my teeth itch, along with 'mate' and 'bud'. But essentially, they're just verbal ticks - no real harm in them. I notice I start to use 'mate' if I spend any time with a friend who uses 'mate' - it's catching.

Of course nothing beats 'big man' and 'wee man'.

it's weird how a lot of male "matey terms" are sort of respectful- Boss/Chief/ Guv'nor/ "Big stuff" but ones for women are cutesy- darling/sweethear/ pet etc

I guess at least "my lover" is unisex Grin

I think alot of these expressions (bud, hun.love, babe, mate etc..are only used to call some people so they will be liked more and become more popular and fit in easier. It's a way of trying to be excepted above all it's all very common and it's just not my cup of tea

Some people use nicknames because they find it very, very hard to remember real and actual names .

Because how can you tell they are Indian by just looking at somebody they may come from Bangladesh or Pakistan. It's not very PC to assume someones country thats why they should be called ASain because it covers that part of the world.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest.......my DP calls people fella, big guy, bud. I call people love, hunnie.......I call little ones sweetheart and soldier! I find it easier if I don't know their name, kids love me calling them sweetheart and soldier, so much so our neighbours little girl came for tea and asked me why I called a little girl at the park sweetheart and would I call it her....bless Smile I have to say though if I know an adults name I do call them by it Smile and I tend to call older people sir and I try not to call an older lady anything other than Mrs ? as when I worked in an old people's home they hate being called love, sweetheart etc by young people which is understandable.

I miss these terms. Not in the UK and there's no alternatives in the local lingo. Lots for kids but none for adults. It's really lovely to go back to the Shire at Christmas, nip into town for an hour and get called darling , sweetheart and love in that time.

But if in SE Asia, you say someone is "Asian", they think you mean SE Asian. They wouldn't say someone from India was "Asian" (yeah, I know they are, but it's the perception. Kind of weird.)

So the "Asian guy" could be Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Cambodian etc, but not Indian, Bangladeshi or Pakistani.

Anyway, i digress.....

op I call them Indian when I know that is where they come from.

You are making the point if they don't know right?

Anyway Asian means something different in the US.

Isn't there a scene in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, where there is a fight in the forest and some guy gets saved because his wife boshes someone while shes sguarding their treehouse and when the husband looks up, she goes "hello my lover" in her west country accent? Only time I've ever heard it.

Anyway, I don't mind being called most things but babes or hun gets my goat a bit. My sister does it all the time. I hate seeing it written down in convo as well, like on facebook or netmums.

I hate being referred to as my DH's 'missus'.. it angers me soo much, everyone he works with does it and they call their own DPs/DWs their 'missus' aswell. I find it disrespectful and demeaning.

I hate being called anything other than my name too so yanbu at all. Chick, chicken, hun, babes, mate.. Love has to be my least favourite. I have to say out of all the pet names if I had to be called any i'd take darling, flower or sugar- they just don't offend me as much.
