Ok I new it wasn't a health food but I didn't know it had palm oil in. (label just says vegetable oil).

It's cheap so manufacturers have started to use it in loads of products over the past few years. Read the labels, you'll be surprised.

Narked · 11/11/2012 14:59

Sustainable palm oil production is a myth according to Greenpeace.

Narked · 11/11/2012 15:01

Products with palm oil in.

complexnumber · 11/11/2012 15:28

IMO LDNmummy speaks a lot of sense.

Maybe it is our life style, rather than the palm oil that is wrong.

On an aside, I remember when living in Nigeria a street delicacy called Kuli-Kuli. It was fresh ground nuts (peanuts) pounded and the oil removed from the mulch, which was then spiced and fried in the removed oil.

It was absolutely lovely, (and went so well with a couple of beers)

Stinkyminkymoo · 11/11/2012 15:41

Very sad to read this, I didn't know Sad

Nutella is in Ferrero Rocher (it's the middle bit). Very disappointing. Sad

Mrsjay · 11/11/2012 15:50

most vegtable oil is palm oil you just need to find if is from a sustainable source but as a big company they will buy palm oil from all over the place into 1 big consignment iyswim, It is difficult to judge what to use and what not to use palm oil is in everything almost Sad

WearingGreen · 11/11/2012 15:50

If you want to make your own

1 tin condensed milk
200g chocolate
bag of hazelnuts
bit of veg oil to stop it being solid.

LesserOfTwoWeevils · 11/11/2012 15:51

Palmers claims their palm oil is environmentally ok. From their website:

Where do you get your Palm Oil from and does it have any negative effects on the habitats and animals?

Our Palm Oil is sourced through a company that owns and operates their own plantation in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Palmer's and its supplier are committed to responsible and sustainable palm production. Sustainable means a commitment to safeguarding the environment; protecting native animal species, such as orangutans and tigers; providing a safe and healthy work environment for their employees; respecting local land rights and helping to develop local communities.

frenchfancy · 11/11/2012 17:34

The reason I found Out is because the French government are planning a tax on Palm oil. So not only is it bad for the health, but in the future it will be bad for the wallet too.

I don't buy alot of processed food, and when I do I check the label. If it says palm oil I don't buy it. I naively thought it would be labelled rather than hidden under vegetable oil. Lesson learnt.

Often, "vegetable oil" means oilseed rape, too. Lovely petri-chemical solvent residues, anyone?

and what about shampoo, toothpaste, soap, cosmetics, biofuels, chewing gum, household cleaners? Anything with Sodium Laurel Sulphate in it is probably derived from palm oil. You're going to have a devil of a time if you want to go completely palm oil free.

List of names for palm oil products.

talkingnonsense · 11/11/2012 18:04

I thought oilseed was canola was good?! How does anyone keep up?

Kewcumber · 11/11/2012 18:08

As far as I know rapeseed oil has no connection with petro-chemical solvents and is actually one of the healthier oils Confused

PoppyWearer · 11/11/2012 18:11

Is it? Oh bollocks, it's one of the only things I can reliably get into DC1 food wise!

I otherwise avoid palm oil as much as possible because of the environmental impact.

I wonder if the Bonne Maman stuff is ok?

bellabreeze · 11/11/2012 18:19

OwedToAutumn, meridian peanut butters ingredients are literally just 100% peanuts, healthfood shops sell it and I'm not sure where else

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/11/2012 18:31

Unfortunately, they are laced with industrial solvents to extract the maximum oil from the seeds.

Also, seed oils are mostly Omega6 heavy (with not enough Omega 3 in).

Best oils are Virgin Olive (no chemicals used), and raw coconut.

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/11/2012 18:34

Biona nut butters and coconut oil are good - the butters are 100% Almond/Cashew etc. I buy from an online health food shop as there are no local stockists (I'm rural so not much choice in food shopping for "odd" things).

lljkk · 11/11/2012 18:36

Er, yes it does, Kewcumber. Hexane is used to make most vegetable oils. Read more here. The residues are probably small, I don't overly worry about it. But don't delude yourself it's "natural" unless you go for a mechanically extracted or cold-pressed premium product. From what I can work out, rapeseed was completely inedible until the Canola variety got made, and then it became very commercially successful due to RoundUp Ready (Let's all clap thanks to Monstanto).

Olive oil is usually hexane-free (watch out for pomace oil). Coconut & Palm oil mostly hexane free, too. Not sure I can find anything that looks like a definitive source, but this seems to spout the most common opinions on how most most food-grade oils are made.

talkingnonsense · 11/11/2012 18:53

But cooking with olive oil makes it bad for you, right? What do you cook with? Sunflower?

InNeedOfBrandy · 11/11/2012 18:55

Isn't coconut meant to be the healthiest? It actually takes the fat out of your body apparently.

lljkk · 11/11/2012 19:02

Cooking olive oil makes it bad? New one on me. From what I'm reading I think that may only be true if the oil is burnt.

Oil that takes fat out of your body? I love it. How about one that gets up & makes you cups of tea in the morning? I'd quite like that, too.

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/11/2012 19:05

I cook with raw coconut oil, or virgin olive oil, sometimes butter - usually roll in oil and cook in over rather than shallow fry (never deep fry). Cooking at lower temps is healthier (if cooking at high temps, it should be for a short time only), and oils/fats should not be reused.

SCOTCHandWRY · 11/11/2012 19:07

Cook in *oven

AndMiffyWentToSleep · 11/11/2012 19:58

I thought red palm oil (like they use in West African cooking) was 'healthy' but when processed to white oil (aka vegetable oil) it was not healthy

pigletmania · 11/11/2012 21:30

Noway am I giving up lovely Nutella there is no nice alternative

stinkinseamonkey · 11/11/2012 21:43

yes olive oil is good for you if its cold and hasn't been cooked!

coconut oil tastes better in cooking anyway
