to ask how much you spent on nirsery furnature?

Just had a look on mothercare for a nice furniture set (not due till may but can't sleep and fancied a look) some of the furniture sets are over £1000! Am I BU to think that's an awful lot for furniture that will probably last baby a few years at best?

We've never spent much:

DC1 - Cot and mattress £80, childrens wardrobe £50

DC2 - just got another cot and used the storage we already had in DC1s room, so around £150 as we got a cot bed

DC3 - Cot and mattress £150 and Ikea mammut drawers (not sure exact cost but under £100). Bedroom has a built in wardrobe too.

There's no way I'd want to spend thousands on so-called nursery furniture. I do know a friend who got a gorgeous Mamas and Papas set from Ebay for £75; cot, wardrobe and changing unit, so it's always worth checking out Ebay, Gumtree, and your local paper's selling page for bargains

0£ with both children. Didn't bother with a nursery or even a cot.

I bought a cot, a chest of drawers (still used), and a nursing chair. For DD I bought a 2nd hand changing table for £40 because I thought I was going to have a C Section but didn't. The latter was the best buy ever and if you have space I would recommend it as a must have - it just made life so much easier.

The chair was invaluable too because both mine had huge problems with their ears and wheeziness and many a night was spent gently rocking and nodding with an upright baby in my arms. I also found it good for the night feeds. It was recovered long ago and is still a favourite chair.

Never had dedicated nursery furniture apart from that or toddler beds. Seemed a waste.

I had argos vouchers for my wedding and used them for a pine cotbed with changer, chest of drawers and small wardrobe - £300. Parents bought a toybox for DS1s first xmas and donated my bookcase from their house.
Lightshade about £4 from B&Q, bin £5 from ebay, curtains £6 in tesco sale

Moses basket for DS1 was free, bedding and mattress about £10 and stand about £10
Bloody thing rotted in the one year it was in the attic so had to get a new one for DS2 - £15
When DS1 went into a bed, my auntie gave me my cousins as she has just moved into a double

My biggest purchase with DS1 was the travelsystem/carseat/pram and that was a low cost too by MN standards which I wouldnt spend if I had them again (please pay attention pregnant MNers ) £450

Then I have a "holiday" buggy £10, normal buggy £45 (mothercare sale), double pushchair/travelsystem £150 from ebay

And just so I've included everything, highchair was about £25

So thats everything for 2 DCs for under £1000

£90 on a cot that was barely used because we co slept.
£19 on a chest of drawers from ikea that is still perfect and in use in the spare room 14 years later :)

£250 at ikea for a cot and drawers/changing table. Need not have bothered. Co slept and changed dcs on the floor. Wasted loads of money on clothes that were only worn a couple of times too. They really see you coming when you are a new mum.

£80 for chest of drawers from ikea. £100 on nursing chair. Changing table was about £60 - last minute purchase as ended up with emcs and couldn't change on floor. Biggest outlay was the cot - stokke sleepi, but came with both mini and toddler mattress and the toddler conversion kit. I think it was about £450 or so as there was an offer in kiddicare.

We also got a miyo baby hammock, but used the healthy whatever it was grant you used to get at 25 weeks for that, and since its used downstairs, and in our room, I don't count that as nursery furniture ;)

My friends bought cot as their gift which was £100 from mothercare
Mattress was £40 (rrp of £90) from tk maxx
Wardrobe and chest if drawers roughly £80 from ikea.
I didn't buy anything 'child size' as I want things to last her until she is grown up. Can't justify these 'nursery sets' that cost over a grand

£100 cot in john lewis christmas sale, £40 mattress from kiddicare, £60 wardrobe ikea, £40 chest of drawers ikea. So- £240.

btw the ikea stuff wasn't from the childrens dep't, we have now moved the drawers into the spare room to make room for toy storage.

I had a cot given to me along with changing table and chest of drawers and I brought a material wardrobe from Argos. So I think I spent about £23

When we had our dd we didn't have much money spare went to our indoor market and got a brand new m and p cot bed with a new sealed mattress with loads of new bedding for £150 because the cot was returned because it had a small mark on it. That was four years ago and now our second dd uses it as a bed. We bought a wardrobe set from from Argos and she really didn't need anything else other than a pot of pink paint for her room. We had a lot of spare money for dd2 but after having some child you realise that all babies need is a bed, somewhere to keep a hundred sleep suits and love!

If we had loads of spare money with dd we old have spend thousands on stuff.

I'm spending £500 at mammals and papas.

Plain white sheets and Gro-bags until in a big bed (which was DH's from his parents house with good quality new mattress)

Big solid wood set of drawers Ikea sale £45, bookshelves and black out curtains.

DH was a full time student when DD1 was born so we just didn't have the cash! Both DDs have survived not having a fully furnished nursery.

We got drawers, shelving, baskets and shelves. So about £100. We had a cot made for use but would probably have got one from Ikea or the Mamas and Papas outlet shop if we hadn't.

i don't see the point in miniature furniture or hanging up baby clothes

I had a hand-me-down cot, so all I bought was a new mattress and an IKEA chair for about £70. The rest was all existing furniture. I don't see the point in beatiful coordinated nursery furniture, unless you know you are staying in that house for a long time and having many more children. Otherwise, the moment you move houses, the furniture will probably be just not right.

Right then, we have a built in wardrobe, cot $148 (I know someone who spent over $1000 on a cot - and on fb recently she has said that she has it to buy teething rails for it. My $148 one - which can invert to a cot bed, came with them!), $80 in a sale for a mattress, $100 on a change table, $50 on a bookshelf, $50 on one of those ikea untreated chest of drawers which I stained and put lovely handles on. DS is about to move into his big boys bedroom in plenty of time for DC2 to make use of all of the above.

£100 on cot, £40 on mattress. I regret not buying a cheaper ikea cot, but when we bought ours ikea cots were a different size. We already had a chest of drawers.

On nursery furniture - nothing. On furniture to put in dd's around £200, we had just moved from a furnished flat to unfurnished so didnt have anything else to use or we would have done. This includes the cot matress, cot is a family cot. Dc 2 on the way and we have just bought a wardrobe, second cot, and bookcase second hand from a furniture charity for £50.
I really don't get the idea of the nursery wardrobes they sell. Its like half a wardrobe for twice the price?

Another who spent nothing at all. We were given a cot, but DS never used it because we co-slept. We were also given a moses basket, which did come in handy during the day sometimes. Existing chest of drawers was fine for clothes.

£250 on a cot bed and mattress which we've only just replaced for a full sized single 6.5yrs later (damn good going I reckon!), and about £130 on a chest of drawers. We've since added a book case and a wardrobe, each about £130. Everything was a basic antique pine finish so that we could mix and match from any store & range. The wardrobe is an Ikea childrens one with the double rails - just take one out as they grow and their clothes get bigger! I love it.
