Just had a look on mothercare for a nice furniture set (not due till may but can't sleep and fancied a look) some of the furniture sets are over £1000! Am I BU to think that's an awful lot for furniture that will probably last baby a few years at best?

Everything so far we have for the baby room:

New cot mattress - £80
New Moses basket mattress £16
EBay Moses basket, bedding and stand (although this will go in our room) - £15
Big old chest of drawers we already had - £0
Massive plastic box with lid for all the toys we've been lent/given! - £8
Curtain - I made from Ikea material and some blackout we already had - £10ish

Total about £130.

We were lucky to be given a cot bed (which came with a cot top changer) but if not would have bought one 2nd hand. We might also have looked at a cheaper cot mattress if it wasn't a cot bed that will last for quite a few years.

CailinDana · 10/11/2012 08:52

Forgot to say, we splashed out a bit on this changing table and it is fabulous, we still use it and DS is nearly 2! It dips in the middle so it's very difficult for a baby to wriggle off and DS has never really figured out that he can turn around on it so he just lies there when we put him on it - very handy with a nappy-change-hating toddler! It folds up and the pockets are dead handy. Best thing we bought by far.

honeytea · 10/11/2012 08:53

We have spent around 30 pounds on a new mattress and around 15 pounds on some hang up draws from IKEA to go in our walk in closset. We were given a cot that we have attached to the side of our bed, also we have a little family heirlooom (sp?) cot in the living room. 1000 pounds of baby furniture, why on earth would anyone spend that sort of money?

ditsydoll · 10/11/2012 08:55

We spent a fortune on things for DD1 but never bought nursery furniture as such, just a cot and she had a full sized chest of drawers and wardrobe for her things but she had a huge room. DC2 will be in the box room so wanted something smaller like nursery furniture so we don't have to squeeze things in. Never thought of IKEA, I do hate IKEA though I find it frustrating Haha. DD now has her own full sized matching furniture set and bed and she is only 3 so wouldn't have been worth us getting nursery furniture for her. We threw out her cot becAuse it snapped while DH was dissembling it (hopeless) her pram broke so will be buying new again there. Better get saving lol :)

Nothing! DS moved into what was the spare room, which already had a wardrobe. I bought his cot from the same shop that I got his pram from and negotiated the cot for free as it was a big transaction Smile

EnglishGirlApproximately · 10/11/2012 08:55

About £250 in Ikea. We bought adult range wardrobe and drawers so that when Ds inevitably wants a racing can bed or whatever in a few years we can use it in another room.

If money had been no object I would have had a nursery set though. I know its not necessary but if we only ever bought things that are practical life would be very dull.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 10/11/2012 08:56

Given: cot, new mattress, curtains, desk which we turned into a changing table, quite a lot of sheets and bedding, Moses basket and mattress, mobile... all from friends with older dc clearing out or relatives who wanted to get something 'big'

Bought: curtain fabric (10) paint (30) a bit more bedding (25) rocking chair (25)

nannyl · 10/11/2012 08:58

my mum bought the cotbed £200, and the matress was from ebay, a super top quality one, same as top range mothercare for £40

got a baby changing unit from ebay £10
already had a lovely feeding chair stool, from charity shop £8

so we spent £18, my mum £240

RobinSparkles · 10/11/2012 09:01

£300 for a cot-bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers with a changer top set from Argos.

Well actually, I lie - my mum spent £300 :o as she bought it for us.

The wardrobe and chest of drawers are still being used by DD1, who is now 5 and the cot bed is currently being used by DD2 (20 months).

RobinSparkles · 10/11/2012 09:04

Btw, I don't recommend Mammas and Crappas Papas. They have a bad rep for crap quality goods and their customer services is shocking!

FredFredGeorge · 10/11/2012 09:04

~20 quid on an ebay change table / chest of drawers (which is what we actually needed)
~75 quid on a cot.

lifeintheolddogyet · 10/11/2012 09:05

A tenner for the cot.
A mattress (can't remember how much, Mothercare normal one.)
Chest of drawers that was already in there.

Second time around we decided to do co sleeping so we got one of those cots that fit the side of the bed and kept DS2 in our room until he was ready to go into share with his brother.

I'd just buy a Moses basket or cot that fits to your bed before the baby comes and see how it goes.

LynetteScavo · 10/11/2012 09:07

The only furniture I had in baby's room was a cot and a chest of draws the right size and height to put a changing mat on. I also had a big bean bag for night time feeds/bed time stories and a little book shelf.

I've always thought nursery furniture sets were a bit naff, but maybe that's because I couldn't afford one when I had DC1.

phlebas · 10/11/2012 09:17

We were given a cot & mattress which remained unused after 4 children & bought a crib that cost £50 which was used by them all & is now a dolly bed. So about £50 + a couple of crib mattresses.

Yeah, we were skint too.

I quite enjoyed repainting the cot etc though, it's still got that 'getting ready' feeling you get shopping.

CuriosityColaKilledTheCat · 10/11/2012 09:23

I bought a cotbed from a mamas and papas outlet. Cheapest cot, more expensive mattress.

The rest is ikea furniture. A lot of my friends bought their cots from ikea to and I kind of wish I had saved the money too!

BrandyAlexander · 10/11/2012 09:24

Both dd and ds have got coordinating sets from Mamas and Papas. I agree their service is very poor.

roughtyping · 10/11/2012 09:24

We didn't buy anything apart from mattress. Already had chest of drawers etc, the cot was the one I slept in when I was a baby, the Moses basket we used in living room was also mine when I was a baby (it went via some friends between me and LO).

Oh no, I tell a lie - we bought a swinging crib. Waste of money.

MummyPig24 · 10/11/2012 09:27

I didn't buy a set. Ds was born when I was loving with parents so used the drawers and wardrobe that were already in my room. Bought a cotbed from mothercare that was on offer for £150. My dad bought the mattress at around £100. A friend lent me a moses basket.

When dd was born, bil bought a crib for us as a gift then when she was big enough she used ds old cot and shared a room with him. Still no "nursery set" just a random set of drawers and v.cheap changing table (which i barely used). Don't really see the necesscity with having it all matching but maybe I would if I had the money.

PeazlyPops · 10/11/2012 09:27

£60 ikea cot, £45 mattress, £60 wardrobe, £100 chest of drawers.

maddening · 10/11/2012 09:28

£80 on second hand cotbed (another £100 on a new mattress as it's for a cotbed ao should last 5 years)

£50 on a crib for our room (2nd hand) and £14 on a mattress.

£130 on a new wardrobe and unit from Ikea.

Chest of drawers was my great grandmothers.

Shelves we already owned we just painted.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 10/11/2012 09:30

Gifted a cotbed and moses basket. Bought mattressess (max £80)

Chest of drawers and bookcase from Ikea (£80 total)

Rug £30.

Tin o'paint £15

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 10/11/2012 09:31

I never understood a wardrobe for a baby..
Who is hanging sleepsuits?

PeazlyPops · 10/11/2012 09:34

I don't hang sleepsuits, they go in a drawer. The wardrobe had a rail for outfits, gro bags etc, and two shelves. I bought canvas boxes for the shelves which have packets of wipes in one, coat hangers in one, bedding in one and the next size up clothes in the other.
