To really hate this other baby

DS is 8 months and maybe on the slightly late side of developmental milestones. Eg only just decided he likes rolling etc. Well anyway, there is another baby that managed to do everything a good few months before DS -she is older than him but I know because her mum showed me her booklet and she's fecking babbling at 3 months, rolling at 4, getting herself up to sitting at 7 months etc.

AIBU to HATE this other baby with a passion???

I was a genius baby. Walking at 10 month, talking in sentences at 18 month.

My son walked at 10 month. Starting to talk in.sentences and he is 3 this month.

I may have been genius then but I am no longer.

It's not a competition. My first DC walked at 10 months. My second crawled at 5 months and walked at 12 months. My third didn't even roll til he was 12 months. Everyone's different. And it's all ok.

Your mum has probably only just got round to filling that book in you know - no one ever fills stuff in as it happens. Then your memory goes...

Clearly you need to fill in DS's book even earlier just so your grandchildren have something to aim for

I'm waiting for the PO to come along after not reading the OP properly.

My DB walked at 8 months, He tells people this all the time like it makes some kind of athlete or something. It always makes me chuckle.

I am amazed someone actually filled in one of those books!

It's weird because I do genuinely feel quite jealous when I read that baby's notes, have to keep reminding myself that the baby is me! Am I to be pleased that I was so advanced modest or am I to wonder if my parenting skills are somehow lacking compared with my mum's if she managed to get a baby to do all those things so quickly??

The alternatives are

-Mum is exaggerating (highly likely)
-DH'a genes have got in the mix and are now letting the side down (almost a definite, I'd say)

Oh my god, don't believe anything written in the baby booklet! I filled mine in with a large pinch of wishful thinking.

I walked at about nine months and was holding proper conversations at under two apparently.

DP was a lazy bugger and didn't walk stably until 18 months or talk properly until 4.

But YANBU, that other baby sounds awful.

My parenting skills must be very lacking then. Ds didn't walk until 17 months, is 3 next week and his speech is still 'behind' a lot of his peers.

He is happy and (fairly) healthy though so I must be doing something right!

I knew a baby like that when I had DS1. Smiled first, rolled all over the flipping place at 4m, walked early etc etc and I was BITTER. Luckily DS2 was an early do-er so I could feel smug and I really, really did (hid it well though I doubt). I Feel like a massive twat about it now of course.

I was at baby clinic with DS1 when another baby was cruising round the furniture but looked very young. I asked how old he was and he was same age as DS about 7 months I think. DS had just started sitting up. They then asked how old my DS was and I lied and said he was only 5 months. I cringe when I think about that now. What the fuck was I thinking

I felt very smug this weekend when my parents informed me that dd is very advanced in comparison to where I was at her age.

And then I thought about it......

To me you hit milestones at average age.

I was fully potty trained at 6 months and held down a full time job by the time I was 2.

All word of mouth of course, development booklets were not invented when I was a wonder child.

My poor little DD was in a Pavlick Harness as a baby (until 9 months) so didn't get to sit until she was 1yr and walk much later, it's all gravy though they get there in the end.
She was a good talker etc though cos I guess the poor little thing could use all her energy concentrating instead.
By the time they start reception they are all pretty much the same?

(Disclaimer - Not wanting to sound smug, but I might)

DD is 5 1/2mo. She first rolled over by design at 3 1/2mo, & started crawling a weel later. She's a nightmare to keep an eye on as she won't tolerate being in a travel cot/playpen, so has to be on the floor.

She still can't sit up un supported though which seems to really piss her off.

Your husband is definitely to blame here.

I remember thinking my daughter was fantastic company when she was a baby. I had the best conversations of my life with her. She was about a month old at the time.

All is not lost!

DS didn't roll over till 10mo, took ages to crawl, still doesn't sleep through, etc.

But at 13mo he could hold a pen properly. At 17mo he had more than 25 words and now at 19mo he's making sentences, knows several colours and can count say the numbers in order from 1-10, and 5-1 (reverse).

So, he may yet overtake others!
