Which have you got? The ones I had I could use all day? Baby Bjorn ones though were really uncomfortable!

SufferingLampreys · 09/11/2012 13:25

YABU

and wrong

valiumredhead · 09/11/2012 13:26

We had a baby bjorn - horrible thing as it squashed my hurry boobs but dh like it when ds was really little. Quite like the idea of those ones that are just like a really long piece of material.

Agree with CanI, sorry. They are comfortable if you have the right one for you and tie it properly. At least, until "baby" is 18 months old and still wants to be in a sling...

DuchessofMalfi · 09/11/2012 13:26

It's such a personal thing, isn't it? I loved my Baby Bjorn - it was really comfortable and used it until DS was too big to fit into it :)

ontheedgeofwhatever · 09/11/2012 13:27

I've got two.

One is a baby bjorn and I can only last in it for an hour or so before I'm desperate to take it off

The other is a karime and I find it very comfy and happily wear it for hours at a time. However, I had to get someone to show me how to use it properly as I found it awful at first so if you've got a fabric one try to get some lessons as it makes a huge difference

VirginiaDare · 09/11/2012 13:27

yabu. you must be doing it wrong. I used to wear one for up to 8 hours a day and I have a bad shoulder, never hurt.

noisytoys · 09/11/2012 13:28

I had a littlelife ultralight convertible which isn't a sling because it was a backpack but I could carry it all day til DD was about 3

Ghoulelocks · 09/11/2012 13:29

I'm to hijack...

Totally agree they are not, I had a baby bjorn, great if you were born without nerves in your shoulders or back. Is there though a holy grail of one that is EASY to put on (I don't define tying bows etc as easy) and comfortable? I had a comfy one but just can't be arsed with 6 foot of bloody straps to tie.

OnwardBound · 09/11/2012 13:29

Which slings would people recommend?

I had an Ergo - which was okay until baby about 8 months old.

And then a Babasling with DS2 which was okay until he was about 3 months old.

Those wrapping ones look the business but complicated...

wonkylegs · 09/11/2012 13:29

Our bushbaby carrier was agony after 20mins... My close baby I could wear all day and I say that as a lady with severe arthritis riddling my body.
They just suited me, my body & my baby.

Karoleann · 09/11/2012 13:31

YANBU - I could never wear the three I had (with any of my three children) for more than 30 minutes without my back/shoulders/neck killing me.
Baby bjorns are okay when they're tiny.

bumperella · 09/11/2012 13:31

I use a karrime one (basically a very long length of lycra-y jersey stuff). Once I tied it a couple of times i found it wasy - just a knack to get used to it.
Must depend on your height/shape/posture as to whaich one works for you though!

ScrambledSmegs · 09/11/2012 13:33

Was carrying DD quite comfortably in the Ergo till I got pregnant this year. She's now 2.8yo.

Baby Bjorn however - most uncomfortable sling ever. Had to give up using it when DD was little more than 4 months old. The physio told me he sees a lot of parents who've knackered their backs using BB's.

mrskeithrichards · 09/11/2012 13:33

BabyBjorns aren't slings, they're carriers and shit.

Google your nearest sling library.

Miggsie · 09/11/2012 13:34

They are all awful...tried many
I hated them
DH hated them

and more importantly DD hated them.

Sold off via Ebay - what a relief!

Fairylea · 09/11/2012 13:34

I could never get on with one and ds hated it too.. tried a Moby, baba sling and baby Bjorn. All went on eBay.

I think different things work for different babies. Ds just wanted to lie out flat and stretch from a newborn!

SCOTCHandWRY · 09/11/2012 13:34

Depends on both you and the sling...

No way I could ever use one (I tried several), I was mystified by friends who used them and raved about how easy they were... until I twigged, I'm hypermobile, so although "fit and healthy", my spine, pelvis and shoulders just couldn't cope with the stresses.

Similarly, people with baby car seats who actually carry the baby about in them! Any more than front door to car door would leave me with back pain for days!

Slings are not for everyone so YANBU.

CMOTDibbler · 09/11/2012 13:34

I had a few slings, and when ds was 4 (and big) I could still carry him for an hour on my back with no problems. When he was a baby I'd happily carry him all day - ring sling to be begin, then Mei Tais and hybrid carriers (long top straps, buckle waist)

QueenOfFlamingEffigies · 09/11/2012 13:34

I also think it depends on the sling.

I can still carry my 2.3 yr old for a good couple of hours in a carrier.

I can't be doing with the wrap ones either but we have a Wompat which is no harder than a rucksack to use and is really comfortable.

HecatePropylaea · 09/11/2012 13:36

I've always thought the idea of them is lovely and it looks really cute but I saw a woman in tesco the other day with what appeared to be a toddler tied to her front with a big bit of material and she was doubled over with the weight and I thought that cannot be good for your back!

amarylisnightandday · 09/11/2012 13:36

I had a tomy and a close parent and both were agony with dd1 but I'm willing to try again with dd2 with a Kali sling and a ring doing and an ergo.

mrskeithrichards · 09/11/2012 13:37

Babaslings are shit too! It's no wonder they are so cheep on eBay!

MysteriousNameChange · 09/11/2012 13:38

Sorry but I'm also on the 'depends on the sling' brigade.

Most of the high street brands are rubbish - they don't bring the baby close enough to your centre of gravity.

You can still get nice ones with buckles such as Rose and Rebellion. Ergo as well. Boba for bigger kids (haven't actually tried that one).

Stretchy wraps are good for little ones though you do have to tie them up.
