To consider taking my engagement ring back after 5 years

okay, it's not what you think! I haven't suddenly decided I don't like it! I noticed today that the band has split completely. It's not that noticeable at the moment, it's at the back, but can't help feeling this shouldn't have happened?

I'm no expert but the ring is platinum & wasn't cheap. I take it off at night & in shower etc.

My super organised OH thinks he still has the reciept. I'm tempted to take it back to see what they have to say about it. would that be unreasonable?

i would take it back too. unless there is a chance you got it caught on something that could have caused the split?

OnlyWantsOne · 06/11/2012 19:04

Take it back!!!!!!

EuroShagmore · 06/11/2012 19:07

Yes, take it back. They will at least be able to repair it.

mcrvamp · 06/11/2012 20:34

Hi I work in a jewellers, that sounds like normal everyday wear and tear to me! Even platinum is not in destructable. This would not be covered under any manufacturing guarantee.

ThatVikRinA22 · 06/11/2012 20:49

are you joking mcrvamp ?

i ve had my engagement ring which was cheap as chips for 22 years - its 9 carrot gold and not split - i would never ever expect a ring to split and have it written off as wear and tear! thats outrageous! none of my rings have split and i wear them constantly - i never take them off.

id be seriously pissed off if a platinum ring had split within 5 years and you said its was wear and tear.

which jewellers do you work in? so i can completely avoid it

Iamnotamindreader · 06/11/2012 20:59

I have a ring that split at the back. However this was after over 70 years of use. That is acceptable wear and tear 5 years is not.

lazzaroo · 06/11/2012 21:31

Thanks for replies. I'll be gutted if they say it's just to be expected. Surely the whole point of an engagement ring is for it to last a lifetime! I'll try going back to them & see what response I get. Your replies have encouraged me to do battle!

Platinum is strong. It should not have failed.

mrscumberbatch · 06/11/2012 22:26

Hello I'm a jeweller, wear and tear on the band is normal. Obviously more so the thinner the band. If you work with your hands, go to the gym etc it can exacerbate the deterioration.

If it was one of mine that had gone like this after 5 years I'd probably mend it the first time for free. It does seem a bit weird to be honest unless it's a very fine band.

Shesparkles · 06/11/2012 22:28

My engagement ring has broken too, but it's 18ct gold and about 120 years old. That's acceptable wear and tear, not 5 years!
I'd take it back

mrscumberbatch · 06/11/2012 22:35

Shesparkles if you're ever in Glasgow I can recommend a jewellers that do amazing restorations on vintage pieces. I just got one of mine back last week and it hasn't lost any of it's character but is a lot more sturdy!

YouSeveredHead · 06/11/2012 22:38

Defo take it back, Infact get oh to check the receipt , mine had 10 annual check ups included.

valiumredhead · 06/11/2012 23:43

The whole point of platinum is that it is strong!

Yes take it back.

lazzaroo · 12/12/2012 20:08

Okay, so it's taken a while but can now update & ask for advice on next step to take...if any.

Husband couldn't find reciept. I went back to shop anyway & stated my case. Was told all they could do would be send ring to head office for assessment on cause of damage. I queried how likely is it that they would accept responsibility, was told if I thought they would lie to me I should take to independent jeweller for opinion. Agreed they would send off. Verdict came back....crack due to wear & tear I.e my fault. Would charge £55 to repair. Argued my case again & they reduced charge to £45. Still feel aggrieved that it's costing me anything but am due to have a baby in 2 weeks & didn't have time or inclination to argue any further so went ahead with repair.

I did ask for head office contact details with the intention of logging my complaint when I safely have my ring back. They 'phoned today to say ring is ready. Do I just drop it now or e- mail head office?

So an engagement ring can't be expected to last more than 5 years? Wtf?

i know the fittings around the stone are meant to be checked but that's ridiculous.

Grumpla · 12/12/2012 20:19

That's outrageous!

My platinum engagement ring is about 90 years old, it has a couple of marks on it but that is because the alloy back then used to be slightly softer (according to my jeweller friend).

It certainly hasn't cracked and it is a very fine band.

They are being ridiculous.

Pandemoniaa · 12/12/2012 20:21

Goods are supposed to be fit for purpose. So it isn't unreasonable to expect an engagement ring to last a great deal longer than 5 years.

gymboywalton · 12/12/2012 20:22

mental!
i have worn my engagement ring every day for 17 years except for a 6 month period when i lost it and it lay on a hillside till someone found it . it has no damage to it at all!!!

lazzaroo · 12/12/2012 20:28

Thank you! What you are all saying is what I thought & what my argument has been all along but it's got me nowhere. They said it was misshapen & so pressure could have caused the split. I suggested if it was misshapen it was due to poor re- sizing...which they did. I don't abuse the ring or subject it to anything beyond normal wear. I don't even wear it in shower, or bed etc. I will persevere and if nothing else comes of it at least make myself feel better by logging my complaint. We're currently looking at eternity rings for Xmas to mark arrival of new baby. Needless to say we won't be going back there!

Rhubarbgarden · 12/12/2012 20:28

Disgraceful. I think you should name and shame the shop.

Gillyweed001 · 12/12/2012 20:35

This isn't H Samuel by any chance? I'm having a row with them about my engagement ring. Diamond broke off the top of mine after 6 months. They offered to replace, but I asked that I be able to keep the ring for sentimental reasons, as it was the ring that now dh proposed with. They said no, but I could buy a new one, thus allowing me to keep the original. They offered me a £25 discount, but said price of the ring had increased by £10, so they were really only offering £15 off. I complained, as I didn't see why I should pay out for their faulty product. They agreed to replace it, and let me keep original. All good, apart from 3 months after getting the new ring, the same thing has happened! I'm sending it back to them, and will see what they say. It had better not be wear and tear, as how can it be after only a few months?!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 12/12/2012 20:40

Platinum rings don't just split after 5 years of normal wear. I'd take it to a professional jeweller who will be able to identify the hallmarks and the metal and find out what you have been sold as platinum.

lazzaroo · 12/12/2012 20:46

It's not HSamuel, and sympathise with you for having battles too. It's from quite a small retailer, probably not very well known.

I am beginning to wonder if hubby was ripped off in the first place, dearly hope not as he's already gutted that this has happened. When I safely have ring back I may well do as suggested & take into our local independent jeweller for advice.

drcrab · 12/12/2012 20:51

My wedding and engagement rings are platinum and we've been married 7 years now. All good. I would be
V furious if that happened. Argue your case. Good luck.

lazzaroo · 15/12/2012 16:31

Got ring back. No problems with the repair. I asked how long I could expect it to last before same thing could happen, best response I could get was " it should be okay now"!. Took it to independent jewellers today just to check it was all above board. They confirmed it is Platinum & that kind of wear can just happen. Guess I can't really argue my case anymore & just take the discounted repair as the best I can get.
