DH likes sitting in a frigging dark room. I don't.

He likes having only one very dim lamp on and the TV....I can't see the point in this.

I can't frigging see!

I have two or three lamps on myself.

I have agreed to having the lighting how he wants it because he's been working late and I've been here most of the evening.

But really. AIBU to think if you want a dark room, go to the cinema or to bed!!

By the end of the evening we have just the telly and a couple of candles downstairs. Once dinner's over and the kids have wandered off upstairs the lamps go off and me and DH slob on the sofa together in the gloom.

Its a rare occasion that the 'big lights' go on at all in our house.

Love it that way. Dark and relaxing Grin

Is DH Danish? They are obsessed with hyggelig (cozy) lighting, which basically means NO lighting. It's fine in some circumstances, but I want to be able to see what I am doing with the very sharp knife in the the kitchen! We do go for hyggelig lighting if all the jobs are done for the evening, it's a good way to wind down. But otherwise YANBU!

gazzalw · 06/11/2012 08:20

We have the opposite problem....DW likes cosy lighting which means that I can't read a paper or a book if we're in the room together....

valiumredhead · 06/11/2012 08:48

I love a dim room - lovely and cosy!

My DH is the same and I don't get it at all. I can kind of see turning the lights low (but not off) for a good film but I cannot understand why anyone in their right mind would want to watch the news in a darkened room.

MrsCantSayAnything · 06/11/2012 10:48

Me neither Haber What if I want to read? Or sew?

OP posts:
CajaDeLaMemoria · 06/11/2012 10:51

Alibaba - I'm the same.

I like a darker room. Definitely no bright lights. Main light goes off at 6pm-ish, just have the TV on power-save and some candles. It's nicer like that. Soothing and welcoming and gentle on the eyes.

It drives me bonkers when people come in and turn the lights on/up. Gaahhh!

Haberdashery · 06/11/2012 11:15

Yes, I like to read, sew, crochet etc, too. But even if I'm actually watching the television, I like a bit of light. It just seems very odd to choose to sit in the dark. I don't mind dimmer lighting, it's none at all (or barely any) that seems completely bizarre to me. DH will sit there with just the telly and a really dim 25W lamp on, and he quite often turns the lamp off too.

DH will watch telly with dim lighting but absolutely everything else requires florescent strip lighting. He cannot eat by candlelight :( (or even dim light).

nemno · 06/11/2012 11:28

And and he can't get up in the dark/night without light :(

MrsCantSayAnything · 06/11/2012 11:51

I have a standard lamp and two other small ones as well as the ceiling one...but DH likes them all off or just one lamp the dimmest...I can't bear it! I actually get a bit depressed in dim light.

OP posts:
MrsCantSayAnything · 06/11/2012 11:52

Haber I know! I want to see the room around me....not cocoon myself in darkness.

Zalen · 06/11/2012 11:58

Same problem here, I like to be able to see what I'm doing, he'd rather sit in the dark. What really bugs me is when he pops into the room for 2 minutes, turns the light down and then disappears off again

Ragwort · 06/11/2012 12:03

Caja - but what do you do with all the lights off Wink from 6pm - are you just watching TV all evening?

I have to have the main light on as well, because I will be reading, sewing, doing admin etc etc - DH constantly complains; I am seriously considering getting a head torch Grin.

I can't stand the huffing and puffing if I put the light on so we usually end up in different rooms - maybe thats the best way Grin>

GwendolineMaryLacey · 06/11/2012 12:05

Dim lights here too. Luckily DH and I agree. One lamp only although we have more. It's lovely and cosy and designates relax time rather than busy time.

My pet hate when I used to babysit was being all cosied up with the tv and the bastard parents would come home and put all the main lights on. God that used to boil my piss.

Dogsmom · 06/11/2012 12:47

I thought I was the only one but seemingly not DH likes to have no lights on except the telly andI hate it especially as it makes him nod off which is a pet hate of mine, he'll suggest watching a film then go to sodding sleep halfway through. Hmm

MrsCantSayAnything · 06/11/2012 16:03

I think some people just want to sit...and stare...whilst others are looking for input all the time. I am one of the input people and DH is opposite!

MyLastDuchess · 06/11/2012 16:17

My mother is like this. I am short-sighted and if the light is down low I can't see a bloody thing! I agree that the dim light is much more 'cosy' but I feel like I'm locked in a cupboard.

bigwombat · 06/11/2012 16:31

Lol at head torch!! I prefer side lights/lamps, hate having the overhead light on even in the kitchen - the main spotlights just seem too bright!! Dh always comes in, turns on the main lights and asks why I like to cook in the dark. I always thought men prefered brighter light but obviously not from this thread!

WorkingMummyof1 · 06/11/2012 16:52

Yes!!! SO trruuu what is it with people and darkness? I am one to switch on as many lights as poss (within reason!) but others who visit me/DH always go around switching things back off. DH (i suppose!) gets a say - but for visitors to do it - how rude - darken your own home as you please but leave me in the light! Grin

MurderOfGoths · 06/11/2012 16:57

"SO trruuu what is it with people and darkness?"

It's relaxing.

And has the advantage that darkness has never caused me migraines. Win/win as far as I can see.

charlottehere · 06/11/2012 16:58

YABSU. I am currently sitting with 1 dim lamp on, hate having bright lights on, makes me miserable. Confused

IneedAsockamnesty · 06/11/2012 17:05

yanbu.

i got rid of one who was like that (he was also a compleate git so not just due to lights)
we could never and i mean never ever have any lights on in the evenings, i once asked him to compromise by having it on one night a week but nope he wouldnt do it if i turned it on he would just go out and come back wankered and bad tempered so i started turning it on if i wanted a bit of peace
