One of my vaguely acquainted friends' daughter wrote some daft comments on her mums Facebook page. Inevitably someone used the 'fraped' word. I commented on how awful that word is and immediately got shot down in flames. Told to chill, get a grip, etc. so in a fit of pique I blocked the person.

Was that a slight overreaction or was I right to take a bit of offence at people stil using that horrible bloody word?

but you all seem to not grasp that rape has an alternative meaning...

SackGirl · 01/11/2012 16:36

in which 'frape' facebook and rape would make sense... It's no-ones fault that it has two meanings

but to be 'fraped' isnt anything sexual :/ so your argument makes sense...

catwomanlikesmeatballs · 01/11/2012 16:41

If you've got a problem you can send a pm, they're entitled to agree or disagree with your opinion. Doing so on their facebook page is rude.

SackGirl · 01/11/2012 16:42

I think you all just need to learn the english language and the meaning of words first as I never interpreted it sexually... because I know what the word means in another context.

SackGirl · 01/11/2012 16:44

Same as the word cancerous can be used toward ANYTHING that spreads destructively... not just cancer. People shouldn't have to tip toe around other people and think about what words they should use, if the word they are using fits the situation they are talking about... I would say our government is cancerous to our society... Am I being offensive? I have had people close to me pass away from cancer, but I'm not talking about cancer or mocking anyone who has had it?

catwomanlikesmeatballs · 01/11/2012 16:51

Frape is only offensive on mumsnet, everywhere else it's understood to mean that you've been pranked by someone getting into your facebook account and messing with your page. That's frape, it's a description, nothing offensive about it.

All of those words don't actually explain the intent of a 'frape' as in rape encompasses all of those words, where as each of those words is only its own meaning - Rape is a blanket term for all of those words. I just think political correctness will go to far when people start saying 'oh you musn't use that word, even though it is completely the right word for the situation, because it has another meaning which is far more sinister' people are becomming word nazi's - Oh should I not use the word nazi incase there are any jewish people on here... ever so sorry...

PickledFanjoCat · 01/11/2012 18:37

I don't think it's political correctness to object to throwing the term nazi about to describe a person who gets a bit offended by a word when it's the name of an organisation responsible for the destruction of three million people no.

Especially for the reason that there "might be a jew about"

Hmm
SackGirl · 01/11/2012 18:45

I didn't say 'jew' did I - I didn't say they were a nazi either... again it was a description in which I'm trying to make the point of being dictators toward words... I just feel like people aren't allowed to express a view with a word that perfectly gets their point across, without people getting offended. People are so easily offended these days, no-one is throwing around insults or derogatory terms. Get. Over. It... I mean jeez it's not like anyone called you a c*&! Hmm

PickledFanjoCat · 01/11/2012 18:47

I don't care if people do to be honest I'm
not too bothered by frape either although I can totally understand people who might be.

But it does make me unhappy when people throw the word nazi about.

SackGirl · 01/11/2012 18:52

haha it's all about the context, on mumsnet you all seem very oldschool and literal. It's just silly, I'm not calling anyone a NAZI I said "WORD Nazi" - If you understood what I meant by it, then point proven... If you didn't, get a brain cell...

PickledFanjoCat · 01/11/2012 18:53

Can I borrow yours? Hmm

SackGirl · 01/11/2012 19:01

lol... touche. All I'm getting at is you knew what I meant by what I said. I wasn't calling anyone a nazi as in an actual nazi, I just feel it get's my point across about people being dictatorial towards words - In a shorthand way. No-one is being called anything nasty. So none of you laughed at fawlty towers at the 'don't mention the war' with one of them walking round immitating hitler? that's far worse than me saying 'word nazi'

FiercePanda · 01/11/2012 20:58

I can't take anyone who uses the word "frape", or thinks the act of hilariously hijacking a friends FB to post "lol I like wanking cats lol lol", seriously at all. It's something a 13 year old schoolboy would find amusing.

SackGirl · 01/11/2012 22:05

I agree with you there, I have never had it happen to me nor have I ever done it. But that's the thing the people who are using the word are using it purely to let people know someone else wrote whatever 'funny' comment has been posted to save them embarrassment. They aren't using it to shock or offend

FiercePanda · 01/11/2012 22:40

Sorry, I wasn't very clear. What I meant was, I don't take anyone who finds "frape" funny seriously, in the sense of I cannot understand why they think "Facebook rape" is something funny. Rape isn't something to make a joke of, and trying to link the word "frape" to "the raping of the land" is tenuous. It's about taking control of someone's Facebook page, bending it over and fucking with it. Pretty clear what it's supposed to be mirroring in my opinion, and that's not funny at all.

piglettsmummy · 02/11/2012 07:30

I hate the word but see it used often by my friends and it has become one of those common everyday used words. Ive never said to anyone that it's an awful word to use though I mean some people feel comfortable using it just as some coloured people feel comfortable calling each other 'niggers' but if a white person were to do the same to a coloured person all hell would break loose!! Well done for saying something though! I wud never be brave enough for fear of the same response YANBU!!!

SackGirl · 02/11/2012 11:12

Okay if we're going to get into political correctedness the word 'coloured' is so not okay by the way... A lot of black people find it very offensive. It's far worse than 'fraped' :/

SackGirl · 02/11/2012 11:14

feirce panda rape MEANS forceful/plunderous/to take without asking. Not just in a sexual context. Jeez this is ridiculous - Learn what it means!! IT MEANS TO TAKE BY FORCE NOT JUST SEXUALLY... I could get you into contact with an english tutor if you like

SackGirl · 02/11/2012 11:15

No one is saying hahaha people get raped how funny are they? So I dont see anyone mocking rape - We are all smart enough to know it's not funny

FiercePanda · 02/11/2012 11:43

SackGirl I said it was tenuous, I didn't say it wasn't one of many meanings. Keep the English tuition for yourself, your need is greater than mine.

Lovecat · 02/11/2012 11:53

YANBU OP, I hate that word and, having pointed out in a non-confrontational way how offensive it is and how it trivialises rape, most of my (younger) friends no longer use it. Frack (Facebook and Hack) tends to be the current way they define it.

If your English tutor taught you spelling and grammar, SackGirl, I think you might want your money back....
