to think that if you find a hair in a friends cake, it is poor form to say so

and in front of people too!

I made a cake for a friends party, just a quick one to take along and I was chatting to my friends dad who was saying how much he loves it when people make cakes as its nicer than a tesco's one. Queue inappropriate mutual friend with a hair in his hand "Well, I found a hair in mine!" and brandishing it like a winning lottery ticket. What did he want me to do? If I were a shop I would have given him a refund but I am just a guest who thought it would be nice to take something homemade along. Having thought on it, I don't think I would say. Its like dumping on someone who has only tried to do something nice. AIBU?

Do note: I have long hair, I tie it back and wear a scarf when Im cooking but it still got in there.

I would feel sick if I found a hair in something I was eating, but I wouldn't mention it! Just make an excuse not to finish eating my slice.

Greensleeves · 26/10/2012 13:43

My 10yo who has Aspergers wouldn't do this. A couple of years ago he probably would have. But he has been taught that it is RUDE. There is no excuse for it.

KelperRose · 26/10/2012 13:44

yes I would vomit , or have i am going to be sick reaction if I found a hair in my food.

It's not hard to make food without hair in it........if a stray hair falls out upon serving that is esliy remedied but excusable

But a hair baked in your cake is just not on

ProbablyDoingTheWrongThing · 26/10/2012 13:45

I shed like a bugger, hears never really bothered me tbh.

Home made bread does tho.......all that gunk from under the fingernails, ewwwwwwww.

ExitPursuedByAaaaaarGhoul · 26/10/2012 13:46

Tis rude to mention it, but I would feel a bit sick.

Having said that, my hair has taken to dropping out all the time and often turns up in family meals.

MrsKeithRichards · 26/10/2012 13:47

Those fat ladies used to give me the heave

ProbablyDoingTheWrongThing · 26/10/2012 13:48

Hears ?? hair ffs !

Slothlorien · 26/10/2012 13:49

Always remeber the 'queen of the staffroom' doing this to me as an NQT.

Such a bitchy nasty thing to do. Deliberately to humiliate, and change a kind act into a bad memory.

It told me a lot about her.

Greensleeves · 26/10/2012 13:50

lol, you'd be unlikely to find an ear in a home-baked cake

you have to go to MacDonalds for that

lukeiamyourmother · 26/10/2012 13:54

Its wonderful that you can guarantee food with no hair in it Kelper. Perhaps you are bald. I find it a little sad that you wouldn't just be grateful for the gift though, without embarrassing the person whose kindness didn't meet your standards.

OP posts:
KelperRose · 26/10/2012 14:10

no .....it's like giving a person a box of chocolates with a fingernail in it

And yes i think I can guarantee food with no hair in it?

You are annoyed because you messed up and gave someone a cake with a hair baked into it, and instead of admitting you fucked up you want to blame the recipient

lukeiamyourmother · 26/10/2012 14:18

I'm not annoyed, I just think the gentleman has no manners. Which is the same as I feel about you :)

OP posts:
whois · 26/10/2012 14:21

It's not nice to find a hair, but it's not something done on purpose and is pretty harmless! I have long hair and occasionally hair get in things despite it being tied back when cooking.

If I find a hair at a friends house, I just remove it and don't say anything.

Drawing attention to something like that is unbelievably rude.

Nottigermum · 26/10/2012 14:25

yanbu!!!

You took the time to bake something nice.

Some people take great pleasure in pointing out other people's mistakes.

HazeltheMcWitch · 26/10/2012 14:27

it's like giving a person a box of chocolates with a fingernail in it

But it's not though, is it? You'd have to buy the chocs, open them up, rip off a fingernail and hide it.

Rather than just - kindly baking a cake as OP did.

Some people are just not very considerate, are they? Or they like the attention that moaning brings.

KelperRose · 26/10/2012 14:29

oooooooh . you is bitchy ......enjoy your hairy cake

For what's its worth I think the gentleman concerned was possibly inapproriate, however you didn't bake the cake for him did you? he was just an inappropriate mutual friend

Fact of the matter is you baked a cake with a hair in it.....so a guest pointed it out. perhaps he does not like you and jumped on this opportunity to embarress you

Or maybe he doesn't like cakes with hairs baked in the middle of them?

sneezecakesmum · 26/10/2012 14:32

My DD and her DH had christmas dinner at her SILs house. SIL had a new dog and there was hair in every course!!!!

DD didnt say a word, neither did anyone else. Very bad form [hgrin]

TurkeyDino · 26/10/2012 14:33

I don't find hairs in food boaksome at all. If it was good cake a friend had made I wouldn't stop eating it because of a hair. A toenail would put me off but not a hair.

I did once have a suspicious pube hair in the cheesy topping of my pizza at pizza hut. It was buffet lunch so I just got a new slice of pizza. I still complained a little and I got a free meal. With ice cream factory Grin

Latara · 26/10/2012 14:35

He should have just removed the hair quietly; he could have said he was ''full up'' if people noticed him not eating.

That's what i've done in the past.

Hair is hair... not the worst thing in the world to find in food.

Mould, bugs, & germs from unwashed hands are much much worse.

CuriousMama · 26/10/2012 14:36

You get to quite enjoy the odd hair in your food after working years in a hair salon Wink

I once found a fly baked into a yorkshire pudding when eating at a hotel, now that is gross!

MrsBethel · 26/10/2012 14:37

YANBU. Very rude.

I think I'd only mention it if it was short and curly.

Latara · 26/10/2012 14:37

Nearly died of embarrassment when i noticed my cat's hair in a cup of tea i was about to give a guest... now i'm extremely careful to look for cat hair first!

She isn't allowed on the work surfaces in the kitchen but cat hair obviously floats... in the air that is, not the tea.

LadyEvilBeagle · 26/10/2012 14:37

It's just a hair.
It happens.

Pootles2010 · 26/10/2012 14:38

No kelper you are the catty one here, as you well know. You can see that everyone disagrees with you, stop stirrying up (ha!) trouble.

droves · 26/10/2012 14:39

FFs yanbu op .

What a twat , did he not realise you gave him the portion with the extra protein ?
