To take everyone to Scotland when ds has chicken pox

hokeycakey · 24/10/2012 21:20

We have booked a lodge in Scotland from sat to Wednesday as a half term break but ds has come out in spots today.... He seems ok in himself but obviously has the pox

Should we still go away? Thoughts please!

You won't be able to keep him isolated on a journey like that, therefore you can't go.

vodkaanddietirnbru · 25/10/2012 09:33

if he came out in spots on wednesday then he should not be out and about until 5 days after the spots came out which would be Sunday (according to hpa guidance). After that he should be ok to be around others and you could enjoy the rest of your holiday.

hokeycakey · 25/10/2012 10:18

Thanks for all the advice, that's what I was genuinely looking for I wasn't saying fuck everyone else I'm going on holiday I have never had a child with chicken pox before so was hoping for my question to be answered and it has been!

Could you get him to use a potty so you don't have to go into service station toilets on the way up there? That really is the time you might come into contact with people.

Handbag I don't understand, your child was to ill to travel but you took them to the beach in the rain? Also I come from the south west and beaches are never empty in the summer even if it is tipping it down with rain, we were in Cornwall on the beach in gale force winds and we were by no means the only people there this june.

I don't think you'r a bad person I just think you have your priorities wrong, a trip to the beach shouldn't be more important than keeping people safe from chicken pox.

you did say sitting on a rainy beach isn't exactly spreading it around, that does sound like the cp child was on the beach.

Sirzy · 25/10/2012 13:15

Your story is changing every second. First you carried on when she was well enough, then you just took her to quiet beaches, then you left her sat in the car. Make up your mind which version you want us to belive!

Bogeyface · 25/10/2012 13:17

I wouldnt because my DD almost died of it when she was 5, she was seriously seriously ill and it happened almost in a heartbeat. She started as all my others have with CP, with a few spots but fine in herself. The next day she went downhill in a matter of hours and the GP was trying to find an isolation room for her but was struggling. He said that aslong as her breathing was ok we could keep her at home on antivirals and other meds but to call 999 if she so much as coughed. He called every hour or so and visited before and after each surgery, which doctors just dont do! It was the worst 48 hours of my life and it would have been even worse if we had been away from home.

Some kids just dont handle it well. She cant have vaccinations either as she reacts horribly to them, which is a huge worry for me as the uptake rate here is low so there is no herd immunity :(

Bogeyface · 25/10/2012 13:18

Does it matter what Handbag did?

She coped as best as she could, did what she thought was right,, under very difficult circumstances. Hauling her over the coals now for something that is done and dusted is neither constructive or fair.

Sirzy · 25/10/2012 13:21

I would say to the people who were potentially infected it could matter a lot. You can't post that you carried on your holiday and then expect people not to disagree with it.

It's not that anything could be changed now it's just the attitude of prioritising your own child's holiday over the health of other people is very wrong in my opinion. From what she said she was doing just that. Now she says she infact didn't carry on as normal or go for wet walks on the beach her child never came into contact with anyone else. If she had said in her original post "My DC came down with chilcken pox on holiday and we made every effort that she didn't come into contact with any other people" that would have been very different to "we just carried on as usual"

Sirzy · 25/10/2012 13:23

Exactly honey tea

nulgirl · 25/10/2012 13:27

I think you are getting a rough ride here OP.

My dd came out with chicken pox when we were on holiday and we didn't come home. We were in the middle of nowhere in Scotland and so we stuck to the house and remote beaches and forests. And when I say remote I mean with no one other person within at least 500m of us. She used her younger brother's potty when we were coming home so she didn't have to go to services. We didn't take her to play parks, shops or anywhere near other people

Before deciding to stay, I checked with my best friend who is a paediatrician. She confirmed that what we were doing was fine. I don't understand why people are saying that he is any more dangerous on holiday than he would be a home (as long as you take precautions not to come into contact with other people)

I think the tricky bit will be the journey there. Service stations are always busy and everyone is packed closely together. How would you get him to the loo without infecting the whole place?

hokeycakey · 25/10/2012 14:04

Handbag sorry you are getting a roasting on my thread! From what you say you did the best you could under the circumstances and what's done is done, people are just trying to pick you apart they don't know you or the situation so don't take it to heart

OP posts:
hokeycakey · 25/10/2012 14:06

Loo wise I guess we would let him go in the bushes somewhere on the way and pack some food, we usually drive overnight so the kids can sleep anyway

OP posts:
hokeycakey · 25/10/2012 14:07

But from the sounds of the advice on this thread we won't be going anyway!

Well it depends on how badly they have it doesnt it? DS had chicken pox and 5 days later all crusted over and he was fine. DD has chicken pox 2 days later and she ended up get wave after wave of them with new spots coming for 7 days. In the end she had so many (over 600) and was so ill she was barely conscious, she was taken to A&E and admitted to childrens hospital where she was on an IV antibiotic drip for 4 days becuase she got a seondary bacterial skin infection. She was so so so very ill and it was awful.... so it depends on how many he has and how ill he is in the first instance. Many people think CP is no big deal and I thought that until DD had it. Drs and Registras all told me it was one of the worst cases they have ever seen and 4 weeks later she still was covered in scabs.

hokeycakey · 25/10/2012 14:16

Loie that sounds awful! Must have been very scary ds is ok a bit tired and spots on his face back and tummy

OP posts:
Loie159 · 25/10/2012 14:18

It was and it only happended 6 weeks ago! She was fine for first 2 days and then started to go down hill. Not trying to scaremonger, but it did get a lot worse 2-3 days in and then by day 5 she was admitted to A&E, and for 2 days she got more and more spots. Is there anyway you could change booking to next Wed to following Sat as he is more likely to have recovered by then??
