That a baby wipe classed as "extra sensitive" and can be used on newborns

shouldn't make my face break out in a rash and feel like my face was on fire?!

I don't have sensitive skin normally and use all kinds of different facial cleansers / wipes and last night decided to use the 97% pure water Johnson and Johnson baby wipes to take my make up off with.

I have even read a study about them:
www.manchester.ac.uk/aboutus/news/display/?id=8350
which shows that they are as safe as using water.

Stocked up on 10 packs yesterday at Sainsburys as only a £1 a pack, for newborn - but if they do that to my face do I actually want to use them on a brand new baby's bum?

Anyone else have a problem with them?

Pelvic, I'm not saying you're wrong- I use them for dusting and all sorts of stuff! However, I reckon you could take paint off with a damp cloth if you rubbed hard enough (as I did earlier- ooops)

TrudiRed · 24/10/2012 16:00

I've used baby wipes (mostly Tescos fragrance free) on my 3 children since dd1 came out of hospital - where they said we could not take baby wipes, only cotton wool and water - when she was born. They relaxed this rule before ds and dd2 came along. I use them on faces, hands, bums and everything else to mop up spills with no bad effects. I use the Tescos ones mainly because I like the plastic closable lid rather than the sticker things. I would use any other brand if I needed to apart from Huggies which I find less soft than everyone else. I do not think any wipe meant for a baby should make your face sting though and I agree that you should either take them back or write to the manufacturer stating where and when purchased and ask for your money back. Oh and I also find Johnsons products leave my childrens (and my) skin dry and flaky too. Finally yes I agree you could take paint off with a damp cloth too!

Ithinkitsjustme · 24/10/2012 16:02

I've used babywipes on all my kids and had no problems with them. I know tha Johnsons have changed their formula so can't comment on your own problem with them, but it has to be said that it may be that you have an allergy to something in them. Anyone can be allergic to anything. If I had a reaction to a certain product I wouldn't be using it on my own newborn in case they also had the same reaction. It's very easy for any product to label themselves as 97% water, because 3% of chemicals can still be quite strong. (many alcoholic drinks contain that amount of alcohol, for example). Any product that can remove lipstick, nail varnish, paint, wax crayons must contain some pretty serious stuff. Does anyone remember the original babywipes (about 20 years ago, blue packet and stank of something like paint stripper!

Yes, you can take paint off with a wet cloth, wet cotton wool or a baby wipe, most internal walls are painted with regular emulsion paint which is water based. So rubbing with a wet cloth will take off some paint. Not if you have a vinyl silk effect paint obviously though as they are oil based.

YouOldSlag · 24/10/2012 16:09

My point is, don't blame the innocent baby wipe for taking paint off. It doesn't mean it will take skin off a baby's bum.

All I know is that Huggies Pure were gentle enough for their bums. I'd even do a raspberry on their baby bottoms and had no ill effects. (sobbing at happy memories of newborn bums)

ENormaSnob · 24/10/2012 16:11

There is a recent study into water vs baby wipes in newborns.

I haven't read it properly yet so can't vouch for the quality of information.

We use baby wipes in my hospital.

YouOldSlag · 24/10/2012 16:21

It was a midwife in hospital who said Huggies Pure were OK to use, so I guess they can't be that evil, ENorma.

At first they gave us a bowl of cooled boiled water in a pudding basin and about 12 cotton wool balls. DH really struggled doing the meconium nappy with those. Wipes were a big relief.

The only wipes that DD reacts badly too are Huggies. She has eczema anyway so we have to be very careful with what we use & have actually found Lidl's sensitive wipes to be the best for her.

ENormaSnob · 24/10/2012 16:32

Think we use similar at work yos. I am a midwife too.

Have always used wipes on my own dc too.

YouOldSlag · 24/10/2012 16:35

What an incredible job you do Enorma! Midwives helped make me the happiest woman in the world.

Fakebook · 24/10/2012 16:35

I hated johnsons wipes. They were stinky and gave my dd nappy rashes. Pampers sensitive wipes are the best. Boots own fragrance free baby wipes are pretty good too.

Fair enough, I could be allergic to something in the ingredients, I was just surprised that having not had a reaction to anything else in the past that I would react to something apparently so mild!

Taking them back anyway, if I reacted my lil baby may very well. I used Huggies and Tescos for my last two, will just go back to them.

Thanks for your comments everyone.

I've used wipes on all 3 babies and on me without any problems. I tend to use the Tesco ones because they have a click close lid which is better than the normal sticker close ones. I have had problems with Johnsons products bringing babies out in a rash before though. I couldn't use them on DD or DS1 (although funnily enough the wipes were always fine) they seem to be fine for DS2 though, which is just as well since we were given a big hamper of the stuff! I suspect it's just one of those things, different individuals will react differently to different things and you were just unlucky. Given that you did react in that way then no, I wouldn't use them on your baby because if you have a sensitivity then perhaps the baby will too.

Ithinkitsjustme · 24/10/2012 16:41

I hadn't thought about maybe you had a "dodgy" packet, it might be worth writing to the company about your reaction. There could be a problem with the batch.

HoratiaWinwood · 24/10/2012 16:51

Huggies Pure aren't just water but they are sensitive enough for my very sensitive skin.

J&J are very strong and even using them on my hands causes problems.

I have never worked out how to get a baby's bottom properly clean with cotton wool and water but neither of my DCs has reacted to Huggies Pure (creamy yellow packet, frequently on special offer). My attempts with water always end in red bottoms.

IsSpringSprangedYet · 24/10/2012 16:53

I used Huggies on my last newborn (still do) and water and cotton wool for the first two.

Our HV told us never to use Johnsons as they use a chemical from sheeps wool hope she wasn't winding us up that is actually more harm than good. When she wrote to them asking why they use it, they basically said "because we're Johnson's and we can".

OddFrog · 24/10/2012 17:10

Johnson's are terrible for skin, but great for getting red wine out of carpets!

GotMyGoat · 24/10/2012 17:14

Only baby wipes you can truly use on a new born are Water wipes - 99.9% water, 0.1% grapefruit extract.

they are fantastic, even with dds eczema and when she has nappy rash.

4 packs for £7 on Ocado

YouOldSlag · 24/10/2012 17:17

GotMyGoat, well I truly used Huggies pure and they were great.

Pomtastic · 24/10/2012 17:19

Our HV told us never to use Johnsons as they use a chemical from sheeps wool

  • yes it's lanolin & apparently renown for causing skin irritation! Only realised the other day that Bepanthen contains it too & has been irritating DD's bottom. Making some home made bottom butter next week!
QueenOfMuppets · 24/10/2012 17:20

How about cheeky wipes? chemical free, more efficient than normal wipes or cotton wool... we loved ours so much that we got a second set so we can have one for each end of the baby!!

www.cheekywipes.com/

Even when we use disposable nappies we do the cheeky wipes with them...

cjbk1 · 24/10/2012 17:23

What i meant is that we had a problem with buggies 'water' wipes and yes the other small percentage is chemicals

GotMyGoat · 24/10/2012 17:24

Yep, we used all sorts before finding these, but advice is to only use water and these fit in nicely. This thread Links to another thread that was on here talking about the only thing we should use to clean fanjos is water, they are sensitive areas and any other chemical cleany things aren't very healthy.
