Watching Beeny last night reminded me of this (weird flat with bath in bedroom in front of the windows, but no shower).

We've been veiwing houses and I'm really Confused by the number of them that don't have a proper shower that you can actually stand up in. Just those pointless shower heads propped up just above the taps (what are they for ?)

Do people without showers have a bath every day? Confused

We have one but I HATE showers, there's no pleasure in standing under a spray of hot water to then get out and shiver.....all the bits that aren't under the spray are goosebumpy.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 24/10/2012 09:00

The shivering when you get out is another drawback of cubicles, whereas with a bath over the shower the whole bathroom gets warm. I love showers, could stay in for 20mins every time quite happily.

MrsHoarder · 24/10/2012 09:01

I can't cope without a bath. For 2 years I lives in a flat with only a shower and my skin was really dry and sensitive. Into a nw house with a bath and its fine as long as I have at least one bath a week. Even in student houses I used to clean the bathroom then immediately run myself a bath.

expatinscotland · 24/10/2012 09:03

I agree, catgirl. Shower to clean, bath to relax.

DD1, however, always hated showers.

I prefer a shower installed over a bathtub. My parents turned their ensuite into a shower room, all tiled and nothing to climb over for the shower cubicle, as they live in a bungalow and are getting on, but left the other bathrooms as shower over bathtub.

The house we have just moved in to has no shower. The last owners put in a beautiful new bathroom with no shower which is a bit odd. But some people don't mind, or would rather have a bath every day. I love baths but I do miss the shower foe speed and ease.

bamboobutton · 24/10/2012 09:37

My hair is like madbus's, takes forever to wash the shampoo out of my almost waist length thick hair, and then i have to condition it really well otherwise it is like a tangled thatch.

I'm usually in the shower for 20 mins when i wash my hair.

SugariceAndScary · 24/10/2012 09:37

Dh is a plumber and put in a lovely big bath but By Christ it takes ages to fill!!

I could be in and out of the shower then dressed and had a cuppa by the time it's reached a decent depth, ooh the cost on the meter [hshock]

EdsRedeemingQualities · 24/10/2012 09:42

Sorry if it's weird. We can't have one put in, we rent, and our house is too old for the water configuration to work properly with an electric shower.

I feel a bit offended that you think we're weird.

We have got a bath - and a shower attachment thing which is a bit crap. But we don't have much choice in the matter and the kids love having baths.

Bunbaker · 24/10/2012 09:53

"I have a shower every morning and a bath every night
I need both"

Unless you have a very physical or dirty job I don't understand why.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s. Back then houses didn't have showers. If I had a choice between a bath or shower the bath would win every time. We have a bath and two showers so we do have a choice. I love a long, relaxing laze in the bath in the evening.

Getting rid of a bath in favour of a shower is very short sighted IMO as it vastly reduces the saleability of your property when you want to move.

fatlazymummy · 24/10/2012 10:02

As someone with long thick hair,I've always found the easiest way of washing my hair is to lean over the bath and pour water over my hair with a jug. It seems to rinse it much better than using a shower. I've always washed my kids hair in that way as well.
Regarding a bath or shower, I guess the ideal is having both. It's just that a lot of us [in this country anyway] don't live in 'property development/house doctor 'land. We just have to live in houses we can afford and make the most of things. Life goes on.

Inneedofbrandy · 24/10/2012 10:13

I was my hair with a jug to!

JackThePumpkinKing · 24/10/2012 10:22

Ha, it would take about an hour to rinse my hair with a jug.

I don't think you're weird personally Eds - I just find it strange that so many houses that we're viewing only have a bath. I've never lived anywhere without a shower, so it's weird to me not to have one.

I hate baths. Waste of time IMO. I get v bored. Grin

I dont think its weird not to have a shower but I couldnt do without one as I shower every morning. I dont use the bath so could easily do without it but I need it for my DSs. I live in a council house and our old house had an electric shower fitted above the bath, we have recently moved and have a separate shower cubicle now to as well as a bath. Showers wake me up, get me clean and wash my hair in the mornings, Im really not a soaking in the bath person at all.

Each to their own but I dont get how anyone could "hate" a shower.

Bunbaker · 24/10/2012 10:35

You must have only lived in modern houses or ones that have had their bathrooms updated, or you are very young. Until about 20 or so years ago it was the norm not to have a shower in the bathroom.

"I hate baths. Waste of time IMO. I get v bored"

A long soak with a good book is a such a relaxing way to spend half an hour or so. What is so boring about that?

craftynclothy · 24/10/2012 10:37

I don't like the shower, everything not under the spray is cold (doesn't help there's a vent right next to it in our house) and I'd much rather relax for ages in a bath. We don't have a meter so it doesn't cost us any extra. The kids are just starting to get used to the shower as they've both been terrified of it Confused.

Until the kids used it, I was the only person to have used the bath in MIL's house Shock

JackThePumpkinKing · 24/10/2012 10:48

Not particularly, no. Lived in a few very old houses in London. Parents house was 50+ years old, all my relatives houses were all old ish.

I'd rather have a shower and read in bed tbh. I can never get baths quite right. They're either too hot, or they've gone cold after 10 minutes (and the tank's no reheated so I can't top it up). too much faff if you ask me Grin

OP posts:
JackThePumpkinKing · 24/10/2012 10:48

Oh, we are only viewing modernish houses btw - nothing much older than 30 years I wouldn't think. Many of them are less than 10 years old.

Ephiny · 24/10/2012 10:50

We did think about effects on saleability of not having a bath, but didn't see the point of being stuck with one (and hence not having room for the big walk-in shower we wanted) for 5-10 years, because of what some potential homebuyer in the future might hypothetically think.

It's diifferent if you're buying the house specifically to do up and rent out/sell on, but if it's to live in you should have it the way that suits you IMO.

If it proves to be a problem I assume we can have one put in when we get to the stage of wanting to selling the house. And don't people often re-do bathrooms and kitchens to their own taste when they buy a house anyway?

Bunbaker · 24/10/2012 10:53

"And don't people often re-do bathrooms and kitchens to their own taste when they buy a house anyway?"

Not always. If they are in good nick or the purchaser can't afford it. I still think it would be the deciding factor in a house purchase for a lot of people. Besides, some people might not want to deal with the aggro of having a new bathroom installed.

Sidge · 24/10/2012 10:56

The only time I have a bath is when I'm pregnant - can't bear them usually.

I've lived in my current house for a year and never had a bath! Luckily I have a lovely powerful shower.

I dislike staying with the inlaws because they have a shower over the bath that's so feeble it's like standing in a bathtub whilst someone spits at you Grin

I think that that´s pretty much a UK thing, isn´t it-maybe unless they have a "power shower"?

lalaland30008 · 24/10/2012 11:03

I only have a bath, I improvise by filling the bath about a quarter and then have one of those shower attachments for washing my hair and face. I can assure you I'm quite clean!

Does waste a lot of water and my bills are high so it's far from ideal. But I can't afford to get a shower fitted at the minute despite having the shower, screen and tiles I need to get something done to the water pressure, a pump or something, and when I do it will be going over the bath as putting a walk in one would be an even bigger more expensive job.

My ideal would be a nice big bath and a stand alone shower it does make me a bit Sad as I've got a lovely big bathroom and it could be put to so much better use. But in the big scheme of things as long as you've got somewhere to get clean it doesn't really matter does it?
