it is not funny any more

OP posts:
whistlestopcafe · 23/10/2012 10:28

It's not just autocorrect that is the problem diddl, it's not being able to scroll back and proof read a lengthy post.

I have just started a thread about a news story and my OP was quite long, I was trying to ensure that I didn't make any mistakes but reading it back I can see that my op is littered with typos. If my phone allowed me to scroll back and preview this wouldn't happen.

Trills · 23/10/2012 10:28

Being able to edit posts would not work on a forum as fast-moving as MN.

09:00 AIBU to like stroking puppies?
09:01 YANBU I like it too
09:02 I agree, it's one of my favourite things

EDITED 09:03: AIBU to like kicking puppies?
09:01 YANBU I like it too
09:02 I agree, it's one of my favourite things
09:04 OMG I don't believe you all kick puppies!

insancerre · 23/10/2012 10:29

I like random posts. It's like a new form of brain teaser where you have to fill in the missing word.

diddl · 23/10/2012 10:30

"If my phone allowed me to scroll back and preview this wouldn't happen."

So it´s not really designed for posting on a forum?Grin

Pagwatch · 23/10/2012 10:31

I like auto correct because
I am a semi literate half-wit
It randomly puts Ferlinghetti and gereldinetheluckygoat in my posts and emails.

whistlestopcafe · 23/10/2012 10:31

No you are quite right diddl but I couldn't justify logging onto the PC to arse about online.

The PC is for working. My phone is for wasting time. Grin

Jux · 23/10/2012 10:31

I want to know how to turn autocorrect off; android and iPad.

maddening · 23/10/2012 10:49

Mine is awful for it - he comes out as Jeremy, the comes out as thwarted

diddl · 23/10/2012 10:58

"The PC is for working. My phone is for wasting time."

I do love honesty!

I´m not a complete humourless dinosaur & some auto corrects are funny.

I suppose after a while a thread interspersed with "x=y, damn iphone autocorrect", gets on my nerves & I can´t help thinking "turn it off then!"

Or as my Dad would say "a bad workman always blames his tools"

ZombTEE · 23/10/2012 11:28

What phone doesn't let you scroll back or preview? So I know to never buy one...

GhostShip · 23/10/2012 11:33

Mines a pain in the arse, and randomly clicks post message gr.

SoleSource · 23/10/2012 11:36

My imaginary auto correct gets the blame too.

whistlestopcafe · 23/10/2012 11:42

Its an iPhone 4 Zoom, someone will probably come along shortly and tell me that I just don't know how to use it properly...

plutocrap · 23/10/2012 12:01

Hail, well met, OddBoots and diddl!

Spatsky · 23/10/2012 12:05

THe problem is that pressing the space bar accepts the autocorrect so if you are typing quickly without looking at the text while you are typing you are accepting everything (this is how I type and end up writing like a moron). It is a bit more fiddly to rejet the autocorrect.

Must admit, before I got the ipad I though people were being a bit moronic with the autocorrects but now I have experienced it for myself they are very easilly done.

Spatsky · 23/10/2012 12:08

My Blackberry is worse because it physically will not let you say "mo" so I have been known on many occassions to tell friends I will be with them in a month and during Mo Farrar races during the Olympics it was pretty daft too.

ZombTEE · 23/10/2012 12:09

What on earth is an iPhone 4 Zoom?!?!

And, sorry, but no, you're not using it correctly!

Spatsky · 23/10/2012 12:14

Trills: it would work if you could quote posts (then the original would be there for all to see). It is a minor frustration to me that you can't quote posts on Mumsnet.

AngryFeet · 23/10/2012 12:14

I think a lot of the time people make these "mistakes" on purpose to try and be funny.

Apparently it works.

Most of the damnyouautocorrects are probably made up too.

Although I did make a lot of mistakes when I first got my iphone but when I figured out how to stop it correcting i didn't make mistakes anymore.

diddl · 23/10/2012 12:17

"My imaginary auto correct gets the blame too."

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/10/2012 12:18

I've turned off autocorrect and left on spell check on Ipad and Iphone as I am a good speller with clumsy fingers. Spell check is good because if you see a mis-spelt word and touch it it gives you options to correct it with. My main problem on the Iphone is the done button being too near p and o, if you touch "done" by mistake and touch again there the MN post button is there and you post too soon. It might be better in the monile version but I prefer the desktop version. You can scroll un the text box.

My other problem is that when you go back to correct an error manually, wherever you touch to insert it puts shift on and you get random capital letters, this is even with autocapitalise switched off.

whistlestopcafe · 23/10/2012 12:20

ZombTee, Its just a standard iPhone 4 not an iPhone 4 Zoom. That was me misreading your name. I need an autocorrect for my brain Grin

Spatsky · 23/10/2012 12:22

agree with whoknows about manual correcting. That and that it takes me about 50 stabs at the bloody screen before I can get the cursor in the correct place .

ZombTEE · 23/10/2012 12:24

LOL

Okay, I was so confused!

You absolutely can preview and scroll on a 4. I have a 4. I do it all the time.

Would you like to learn?

Nancy66 · 23/10/2012 12:25

Most of the comedy 'mistakes' on here are deliberate.

the minge/mince one that everyone seemed to find so hilarious being a prime example.
