In reply to 'cyclists having a deathwish'. All these things have happened this week, no wonder we're an angry bunch! I cycle everyday to work and drop DS (18mo) off at nursery on the way

  • IF I INDICATE RIGHT, DO NOT THEN OVERTAKE ME ON MY RIGHT HAND SIDE! thanks. If one more person overtakes me on my right hand side when i've indicated, i will purposefully fall off my bike and claim then knocked me off and sue them
  • A cycle lane is for me to cycle in, not for you to park.
  • a woman doing her make up in her mirror at 7:30am drove through a red light, when me and DS were trying to cross the road at the green man and clipped our back wheel, sending us flying. He is fine, thanks to a helmet. (cycle on the pavement at busy times when I have DS and pavements are empty)
  • If you insist on driving your little darlings to school in a fucking ridiculous 4x4, it's not my problem to make way for you and you should drive behind me sensibly until it's safe to overtake and not drive me into the pavement
  • When there are road works blocking half the road, i am infront of you and have right of way. I shouldn't have to stop and wait for their to be a gap so I can overtake roadworks, you go after me and don't try and run me over

-Me and DS always have helmets and lights on. BUT if i have cycled by myself to the gym in the evening, i may not have a highvis jacket on or lights because I was expecting it to be dark. You're issue, i'm going down a road with fucking lights everywhere, it's not an excuse not to see me. I shouldn't have to paint mysef flurouscent just because you're distracted.

  • Crossroads? Deathroads. I have to wait for a car going the way i'm going to cycle alongside and guide me across safely, or i would be pummeled.

-If you are on your phone. text/talking, you deserve to be shot.

  • Mostly, I am on a bike. You are on your ass in a car. I am cold. It is usually wet too. I have a baby on my bike. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK AND LET ME CYCLE!
  • If you ever shout at me out the window for being a good human being and not poluting the planet and excercising, unlike you lazy bastards in cars, then i will remember you. Just because you can drive off afterwards, doesn't mean you get the last word.

I can't even explain my fury, I am so angry at the other thread. i'm sure i've missed some off.

Hilarious. And you got your 'their/there/they're and your/you're all wrong Wink
But yes, taking a dive in a car is definitely an idiotic thing to do

Edofthe13prams · 19/10/2012 14:46

Jam you are doing cyclists no favours with this thread

I resent it as someone who cycles

just stop it

jam17 · 19/10/2012 14:46

nerd i have a great sense of humour, just not about people nearly killing me and my son on a daily basis.

Yep. I agree edofthe13prams.

NotQuintAtAllOhNo · 19/10/2012 14:47

Whether you are diving into a car, or out of one, it is really silly.

Nuttyprofessor · 19/10/2012 14:48

I did dive my car but I was only trying to dip the head lights.

mrsfuzzy · 19/10/2012 14:48

jam whether you have a kid on your bike or not you still aren't welcome on the pavement it's the law and if you get moaned at about it, don't winge or threaten someone i think with your attitude someone might not take to kindly to it, you are vunerable if you've got your child there too. i'd be concerned about their welfare and safety rather than argue with a stranger who might pull a weapon, it not a responsible reaction is it?

charlottehere · 19/10/2012 14:48

IMVHO All bikes should be banned on public roads OP especially entitled ones. Hmm

ivykaty44 · 19/10/2012 14:49

CharlottehereOh and your point about cars driving behind you until it is safe to over take, WTF? Why should they? A car is designed to go a fairly high speed not snails pace

So why is the average speed of a car 5mph in London then and a cycle has an average speed of 10mph in London? Bit silly they drive so slowly as they are not all being held up by cyclists

SkippyYourFriendEverTrue · 19/10/2012 14:49

"Oh and your point about cars driving behind you until it is safe to over take, WTF? Why should they? A car is designed to go a fairly high speed not snails pace. "

Why? Because they are not entitled selfish scum-of-the-earth cunts with no regard to the safety of another human being (or two if there's a baby).

I once overtook (on my bike) a Ferrari with the number plate FA 57 EST, somewhere in Chelsea.

Not round here you're not....

Average traffic speed in central London is 10.1mph. My 5-year-old can cycle faster than that.

AnotherCerealNameChanger · 19/10/2012 14:49

I'll find the report that showed whether the streetlights were on or off during certain hours didn't make much difference to crime.

I should add I am in a not insubstantial city and they are doing this to save on light pollution and energy. I love it. I can see the stars.

FeckOffCup · 19/10/2012 14:51

[Grin] at the man wearing goggles when driving, maybe he broke his glasses and prescription goggles were all he had left?

OP YABU and you sound like an entitled arse, you can't just decide you are going to cycle on the pavement or fail to make yourself visible in the dark and blame every car owner for your mistakes. If you feel cycling with your baby is so dangerous then why don't you learn to drive or use public transport instead?

ivykaty44 · 19/10/2012 14:51

skippy - you 10.1mph is for cycles not cars...Wink they can't get up that fast

jam17 · 19/10/2012 14:51

I really don't give a fuck what way i've used you're/your their/there. I know the correct use, i've just got a ipad that i can't be bothered with. If i'm writing an academic paper at work, then I can assure you I know how to write. So don't worry your little self about my grammar :)

Every poster than comments on the 'dive' error, i'm just glad you're reading at least the top half of my post. (I put the bit about overtaking at the top as I assumed no one would read the whole lot). If you're a cyclist and think i'm making you look bad then tough titties. At least how ever many people may now have it in the back of their heads to respect cyclists a bit more, or if they don't then they're idiots.

So mission accomplished :)

SkippyYourFriendEverTrue · 19/10/2012 14:51

"IANBU cycling on the pavement with a baby"

I don't see that the baby makes any difference? Either it's safe on the road or it's not. If it's not, don't cycle. If it isn't then cycle with your baby. TBH I reckon you'd be safer with the baby anyway, people give you more space.

wonkylegs · 19/10/2012 14:52

unlike you lazy bastards in cars .... yep I'm a lazy bastard who has mobility problems and the car gives me freedom I wouldn't otherwise have.
I had sympathy up until you said that... Sympathy but I don't agree. People can be fuckwits no matter how they travel, the only differential is you need a licence to drive a car, you don't need one to leave the house. I think poor drivers should be called up on their driving more than they are and I think it's ridiculous that my licence effectively lasts forever without retesting whereas my passport only lasts 10yrs. However on my daily journey I usual witness idiot cyclists, pedestrians, drivers (of all types) so I conclude that if you want to avoid fuckwits you're gonna have to stay inside (and probably not answer the door)

Peka · 19/10/2012 14:52

I drive a car
I ride a bike
I am an idiot
However, I don't think there's a causal or necessary link between these three separate facts.

Offcolour · 19/10/2012 14:55

As far as I am aware, (and if i'm wrong please correct me) it's against the law to cycle on the pavement. Which means you are breaking the law (as well as breaking the law by cycling without lights). I used to live in London and got so sick of almost being mown down whilst walking by parents who think they can break the law because they have a child. So, I think yabu because you're breaking the law - or does having a baby mean the law doesn't apply to you?

Btw, I am very considerate to cyclists when driving. my whole family cycle.

Nancy66 · 19/10/2012 14:55

OP you sound like an idiot.

EnjoyVampirebloodResponsibly · 19/10/2012 14:55

Yeah Jam, you're the poster girl for the Respect Cyclists campaign.

Poor DS, crazy drivers on all sides and the ranty woman from cycling hell up front Sad

jam17 · 19/10/2012 14:56

mrsfuzzy i've never said i've been moaned at about being on the pavement. Not once. I've only been on it when I have my son on my bike. The thing about mumsnet is, you all get riled up about what you see on the screen.

Imagine the reality, me and an 18month old (he sits in front because i think it's safer on a central mounted seat) going at a reasonable pace on a practically empty footpath. We both have matching helmets and big winter coats on. We look incredibly cute and aren't shoving people out of the way at all. Everyone smiles at him saying how cute he is and moves willingly out of our way.

Read the thread. No ones ever had a problem with us on the pavement, ever!

JustSpidero · 19/10/2012 14:56

Mostly, I am on a bike. You are on your ass in a car. I am cold. It is usually wet too. I have a baby on my bike. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK AND LET ME CYCLE!

Your choice to cycle and get cold and wet.

...cycle on the pavement at busy times when I have DS and pavements are empty...

If i have cycled by myself to the gym in the evening, I may not have a highvis jacket on or lights...

And drivers are the idiots? Hmm Biscuit

Tailtwister · 19/10/2012 14:57

The way I see it, cyclists should be treated the same as cars when it comes to overtaking etc. People pass far too close and there's been many a time when I've been driving slowly in order to overtake a bike safely, whilst some lunatic is driving up my bumper. I even had someone overtake me and the bike once because they were so impatient.

However, there are cyclists who are complete twats too. It you want to be treated well, then stop squeezing up impossible gaps to get to the front of traffic lights and scratching my car in the process. Also, yes you do need to wear high vis gear and use lights at night. Just like I need to put my headlights on. If you don't, you have a death wish I'm afraid.

Pagwatch · 19/10/2012 14:57

Actually Jam17 people are not likely to respect cyclists more because of your posting. And that is not because they are idiots.

It is because you are aggressive and unpleasant in your manner and have spoken to swathes of people who drive carefully around cyclists as if they are unsafe and selfish.

So you, rather than impressing upon those who drive that cyclists are vulnerable and need space and respect, have given ammunition to those who want to demonise cyclists as selfish and dangerous.

Posting in a thick and aggressive way is seldom effect for winning hearts and minds. You haven't helped anyone. Quite the contrary.
