Playing the recorder on a train

Lifeisontheup · 19/10/2012 11:50

My DH has just texted me. He is on a non-stop 4 hour train journey, a reserved seat in first class and is seated with a family with two young children and is not happy. He could cope with ordinary noise from small children but one has now started playing the recorder.
Is he being unreasonable to want to murder someone? I have advised him to hit the bar whereupon he will fall asleep and his snores will drown out everything. Grin

He has thanked them for the entertainment they have provided for him, his wife and the wider community. They looked a bit bemused. Smile
We will see if they're on the train coming back on Sunday.

OP said it's four hours. Likely to be another dirty nappy in that timeframe.

BlueberryHill · 19/10/2012 14:14

Seriously, wow that is great.

Woozley · 19/10/2012 14:14

Ha ha, well played.

WilsonFrickett · 19/10/2012 14:17

Brilliant. I really, really hope they see this thread.

In fact, why not get the title changed to the time and carriage of the train????

conantg · 19/10/2012 14:19

Ensure DH is well prepared for the return journey, in case they are there again. Smelly hot food from takeaway, lots of Lynx sprayed on, and a kazoo.

boredandrestless · 19/10/2012 14:28

That Tim and Freya story is EPIC! Grin

I wasted a fair bit of time reading it but it was so worth it. Grin

MyDonkeysAZombie · 19/10/2012 14:39

I think it's very lovely that this family share their prodigy child's musical skill. I can't stand the idea that parenting should be hidden under a bushel.

Grin Your poor DH.

Frontpaw · 19/10/2012 15:04

I really hate the 'were the only peopke in the history of the world to procreate - aren't we all super everyone!!!' types.

Mumsnet salutes your DH!

saintlyjimjams · 19/10/2012 15:08

What on earth possesses parents to think this is acceptable? DS3 forces people to listen to his violin concerts in his own home - that's bad enough for the poor trapped sods, but at least they can make their excuses and leave.

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 19/10/2012 15:50

The recorder was invented by the DEVIL, I swear.

Frontpaw · 19/10/2012 15:52

No - it was the harmonica in the hands of a small child. Zhwoooooo-weeeeee,
zhwoooooo-weeeeeeee,
zhwoooooo-weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

WandaDoff · 19/10/2012 16:05

I applaud the people in that train carriage for their patience.

I would have snapped the recorder in half & shoved it up both parent's arses after the first hour.

Acinonyx · 19/10/2012 16:10

I see their recorder and raise them an ocarina.

Frontpaw · 19/10/2012 16:38

I have three children fighting - literally - over packets of crisps and stinky juice at the table next to me. The whole bloody place is empty and they had to sit next to mw and spill their stinky juice all over the table. Mum is reading and throwing out the odd repremend half heartedly in Polish.

Lifeisontheup · 19/10/2012 17:52

We feel your pain Frontpaw. You need Wine and possibly chocolate.

Thank you so much OP and Mr ontheup, I've been having a horrible day and this has cheered me right up. If only it had been the same train as George Osborne, though...

Lifeisontheup · 19/10/2012 17:55

Glad to be of service. Grin

Frontpaw · 19/10/2012 17:57

Hell is definately other people(s kids and parenting).

Lilylightfoot · 20/10/2012 15:06

I hope they get in the same carriage as George Osborne on the way back ha ha ha

IslaValargeone · 20/10/2012 15:13

I don't know whether I'm more surprised at the parents thinking this is acceptable, or the fact that one can achieve Grade 8 on the recorder. I never knew it had so much potential.

Longdistance · 20/10/2012 15:16

On another note boom, boom

Does anyone know of any famous recorder players???

I've always wondered this since being a child, as the usefulness of playing the recorder bitter memories of not being bought a flute

IslaValargeone · 20/10/2012 15:23

Don't be bitter Longdistance. I was bought a flute and every birthday or Christmas after that it was assumed that I would love James Galway's latest 'hits' on cassette. bitter memories of not being bought a sax

These women are brilliant, well worth going to see, this is how recorders should be played.

I'm related to one of them.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/10/2012 17:08

Their music is fabulous - right up my street, quoteunquote - have they made any cds?
