Playing the recorder on a train

My DH has just texted me. He is on a non-stop 4 hour train journey, a reserved seat in first class and is seated with a family with two young children and is not happy. He could cope with ordinary noise from small children but one has now started playing the recorder.
Is he being unreasonable to want to murder someone? I have advised him to hit the bar whereupon he will fall asleep and his snores will drown out everything. Grin

Some people are just oblivious to the fact that other people are around them.

Pippinintherain · 19/10/2012 13:18

God I despise parents like this.

I was at an awards do the other week, one stupid woman let her 3 year old run around the tables, shouting at the top of his voice. We couldn't hear the speeches. She then stood and did that drippy smile while he climbed onto the fucking stage, she looked proudly round at us all like we should be honoured to be in his prescence. Fucking idiot.

I'm amused by this though as it's not me needing to puncture my own eardrums to get some peace.

BuntyPenfold · 19/10/2012 13:19

Glaikit brilliant Grin

OP, tell your DH to take action. My tiny and frail sister was in a carriage with three yobs, who were sharing a porno magazine and reading extracts aloud in a shout to the rest of the carriage. She took the magazine and threw it out of the window. (I remonstrated with her about the littering) to the delight of the rest of the passengers.

Is the beer lager? i.e. nice and gassy?

Can he generate a couple of nice, looong loud burps, then wipe his mouth with the back of his hand and say "Better out than in!"

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/10/2012 13:21

I have often travelled with my dses in first class, and wouldn't dream of letting them behave this way. I'd like to think that I would challenge their behaviour too, though in reality I might well be too much of a wimp.

And whoever said that the infant school recorder choir is a form of torture on a par with waterboarding, is bang on.

Lifeisontheup · 19/10/2012 13:22

He is normally quite tolerant and can shut out most young children's noise (years of practice) but I think he was really looking forward to a peaceful few hours of reading. It's the first time he's shelled out for first class but it wasn't too expensive when he booked three months ago.

This is almost as good as the Tim and Freya on the train incident. Almost, but not quite, although the journey isn't over yet.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 19/10/2012 13:28

Your poor DH! Id be livid and complaining! LOUDLY!Confused

Bongaloo · 19/10/2012 13:30

If I were him I'd have to tell them the story about the little girl I knew when I was little, who was playing her recorder on the train and when the train lurched and she swallowed the recorder.
That sort of thing works with my DC all the time.

CiderwithBuda · 19/10/2012 13:31

How very dare you?

My children are supremely talented. And we don't limit their methods of expression so we would not dream of taking the recorder away from them. They are only doing what comes naturally to young children at that age.And how else do you suggest they entertain themselves on a long train journey??

If other people don't like the music they can move to another carriage.

As regards the lunch we have just eaten, they were offered olives and feta but wanted bacon for some reason so we bought some. Wouldn't normally have any in the house obviously but we want to open them to as many experiences as possible. And travelling first class eating bacon is an experience they requested.

WilsonFrickett · 19/10/2012 13:31

Oooh now I feel the need to ask Bongaloo if that is a true story, even though I know it's not. That sort of thing works with me too! Grin

Oh fuck I missed the bit about the nappy! Envy < that's a sick face

Lifeisontheup · 19/10/2012 13:34

Whatever else you must get him to write down the URL for this thread and hand it to them before the end of the journey with a polit request to look this up.

Lifeisontheup · 19/10/2012 13:37

I like that idea, 5foot5

I once missed my stop on my way to work, due to being engrossed, in a mortified way, in listening to a 16yo tell her male friend all about her boyfriend. They had sex a lot, and she liked to give him head, and they never used condoms, because she just doesnt GET pregnant! She thought he was cheating on her though.
I was just stupefied at these revelations voiced at full volume on a packed train! I was all ready to turn in my seat and tell her that her mother must be really proud of her, when she then changed the subject and informed her mate that she had had a row with her mother, because her mother had smoked all the weed! Shock....i didnt bother!

MaryZed · 19/10/2012 13:46

That Tim and Freya story is great.

PinkFairyDust · 19/10/2012 13:50

You need to ring him and he he answers and says "wow! Tha must be my train because there is a child on here playing a recorder?! I can't believe its am I being unreadable on Mumsnet! I wonder who put it on there?!

Spuddybean · 19/10/2012 13:50

i love these threads. i am sure people like this think the reason people are looking at them must be due to envy rather than the reality which is appalled horror.

I am a bit Confused about how many people on this thread think it's somehow much worse to bother passengers in first class than the normal carriages. Why should anyone be bothered by recorder noise? is there a scale of how much you pay to how much you can expect to be aurally assaulted? Even if i sat somewhere for free i would hope those around me would be considerate.

More updates please :)

Woozley · 19/10/2012 13:55

I was on a late night train when a (slightly drunk) young woman was speaking loudly and embarrassingly about relationships and other personal matters on her mobile. The other passengers started rolling their eyes at one another and then sniggering. She had no idea.

Freshbloodletticia · 19/10/2012 13:57

Ask the guard to move to the quiet carriage.

pigletmania · 19/10/2012 13:57

YANBU he will have to tell them to put it away

quoteunquote · 19/10/2012 14:01

redexpat · 19/10/2012 14:09

Exactly how long is this journey?! The thread has been live for 2 hours now!

Frontpaw · 19/10/2012 14:09

Where's the train going? People need to be warned! The family Twatt (or 'TeamTwatt' as the probably refer to themselves) are arriving on the 6.15 from London - hide!
