To expect the MORRISONS checkout operator not to embarrass me for using vouchers

needsomesunshine · 18/10/2012 10:13

Spent ten pounds in morrisons & used some luncheon vouchers. Checkout woman looked me up & down then asked the next checkout operator if the vouchers were "alright". Than asked me if I got them because I was on benefits! Queue was building up so I politely said no & left. Wish I'd said something now! MORRISONS need to train their staff properly. They're still getting the money & shouldn't make people feel embarrassed for using vouchers. Times are hard!

Contact the store and complain.

When a checkout operator in tesco sneered at a woman who had to put some of her shopping back I reported that specific woman on the checkout . They confirmed that they would deal with it as it was not acceptable.

Its none of her business why you have them.

ellargh · 18/10/2012 10:18

I definitely wouldn't be happy with this and I'd bring it up with the store manager.

ViviPru · 18/10/2012 10:18

That is utterly ridiculous. Luncheon vouchers are given out for all sorts of reasons. My Mum used to get them where she worked and often gave us the left-over ones to use. I got them once when i was on a course.

Silly, nosey, rude woman. I'd be writing a letter of complaint. As you say, times are hard and they'll send you some Morrisons vouchers as a sweetener.

Saltire · 18/10/2012 10:19

Her name or till ID should be on the receipt so they'll know which till operative it was

DameMargotFountain · 18/10/2012 10:19

i get the feeling there's a lot of unrest within Morrisons as an organisation right now, there are quite a few stores local to me and the staff have all been surly and negative.

still, i'd take your issue up with the manager too, it's no-one elses business why you use vouchers.

LemonBreeland · 18/10/2012 10:22

YANBU. How rude and condescending of her. Definitely complain.

MrsKeithRichards · 18/10/2012 10:23

Maybe she had never came across them before and was double checking.

She could have done it in a way not to embarrass you though.

WineGoggles · 18/10/2012 10:25

That's a shame. My local Morrisons is really good and the staff are a pleasant bunch. Maybe it depends on the managers. the one at my local seems a nice bloke and I've caught him having jolly banter with the staff a couple of times, and have often overheard how he talks nicely to them. The atmosphere seems good.

starfishmummy · 18/10/2012 10:27

Yanbu at all. From my experience LVs are often given by employers - not that it would be any of her business anyway.
I think the only restriction is that they have to be used for food you can eat without cooking it - so "naice ham" would be fine, but not a piece of raw meat.

mamamibbo · 18/10/2012 10:27

i spent some healthy start vouchers in there once, my dd was little and said "whats that?" like they do the woman replied with "vouchers, mummys using them because she doesnt have the money" ..

thetrackisback · 18/10/2012 10:31

I used the cafe at my local morrisons. Had a three year old and two babies. I gave them some baby food in a bowl I had brought. I asked a staff member if she could rinse my bowl and she said she couldn't because of health and safety !!! Really good service!! Not sure what catastrophic event could have happened so a bit puzzled!!! Went to asda living and they not only wash your bowl but provide them for you with a microwave and a bottle warmer. Much nicer experience!

DameMargotFountain · 18/10/2012 10:33

i can answer that one track

many establishments don't have a washing up sink, but use dishwashers instead.

they aren't allowed to use the same sink for hand washing and food stuffs - it's good hygiene practice really.

PostBellumBugsy · 18/10/2012 10:34

Yes!

Why is that embarrassing? I don't understand. The lady at the till just asked you a question. Maybe she is on benefits and is wondering if she could get luncheon vouchers?
I wouldn't be embarrassed at all and I certainly wouldn't complain about it.

Hullygully · 18/10/2012 10:37

I agree PBB

Flisspaps · 18/10/2012 10:37

Checking they're ok with a colleague is fine.

Asking if you're on benefits is not.

needsomesunshine · 18/10/2012 10:39

Have you ever had to use vouchers post bellum? It is embarrassing when they make a drama out of it. Surely they should train their staff better.

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 18/10/2012 10:39

I think I agree with PBB.

dlady · 18/10/2012 10:40

Not acceptable, I used to work at Morrisons and we were told on induction day NEVER to comment on customers shopping.

shesariver · 18/10/2012 10:40

Its not of her business why you got the vouchers and she was completely out of order to ask - of course this is embarrasing. I hope you have complained!

posbellum you really dont think this is embarrassing? With the implication (whether meant or not) no doubt in front of a queue of people that OP was poor and "lesser" than someone who can pay with "proper" money!

PostBellumBugsy · 18/10/2012 10:41

needsome of course I've used vouchers and I couldn't give a monkeys if they make a drama out of it. Their problem not mine! If a member of staff is being rude, then I will complain there & then.

notsofrownieface · 18/10/2012 10:42

Yes complain, it was rude. If she asked where do you get these vouchers from, then I would understand as I have never seen a luncheon voucher only the stickers in supermarkets saying that they accept them so I would be curious.

PostBellumBugsy · 18/10/2012 10:43

shesariver, no one can make you feel anything - it is up to you how you feel. I certainly wouldn't & don't ever feel a "lesser person" for using vouchers!

Edofthe13prams · 18/10/2012 10:44

I tried using some healthy start vouchers in Sainsburys once, years ago. The checkout lady didn't know what to do with them and made a BIG fuss, I can't remember what it was now but I know that I was right and she was just clueless - and she really embarrassed me.

It was awful.

yanbu btw. None of her business. It's not something I would even ask a friend let alone a complete stranger.
