DS brought a letter home today saying some children in school had threadworms...
AIBU that I wondered for a moment that it might not be a bad thing if we got them then I might leave them and lose some weight?

Ugh - I was talking about Pripsen the other day - it was the stuff of nightmares. I think only Kaolin and Morphine was worse... yeeeeuch

digerd · 16/10/2012 20:01

I had worms that mum would take out or catch with a hanky (decades ago)and remember crying that it hurt, but my daughter never had them or head lice in 70s at primary school. I never saw the worms, but think mum said they were white and small. don't remember itching though. Too young

We all had bloody threadworms last month, Ovex didn't feckin work, my poor 2 year old has a horrific amount of the awful things, crawling everywhere [shudder].

I had to hunt everywhere for Prispen, hardly any chemists stock it, I mixed if into one of those innocent smoothie Frube type things and both kids took if with no complaints at all. Grin

monkeybignuts.

I was only in my early -mid 20s and very fit at the time, bit 5 years ago was diagnosed with a heart condition most probably caused from that, as I had it twice in my twenties before they decided to do a sub total Thyroidectomy. Had been treated before with Carbimazol that slowed the thyroid down but was overdosed and blew up like a balloon in 10 weeks and put on 2 stone eating much less. I was told I sounded drunk as I was slurring my speech - and they reduced the tablets until they said it was normal and I was in remission, but would probably return. It was 5 years since diagnosis that I had the successful op. Yes my 20s were a nightmare, but i just got on with it and didn't realise just how dangerous my illness was. In your 20s you feel indistructable and I was in denial anyway.

I swear i just gagged at the memory of that medicine, and a daily helping of a spoon of malt! WHY??

FreudianLisp · 16/10/2012 20:20

We had a giant tapeworm pickled in a jar in the biology labs at school. Gave me a proper terror of the critters, I tell you. It was LONG.

Flojo1979 · 16/10/2012 20:21

Oh god you've all brought back some memories. I can't stand raspberry milkshake and I told my parents, a couple of yrs ago, that I hate it because they made me drink it as a child, they said don't be daft why would we make u drink milkshake.
It was Pripsen wasn't it?

digerd Yes, that's the one. Mine did not get as bad as yours but I felt terrible. My heart was racing, loads of palpitations. I drank a coffee and thought I was going to have a heart attack!! The shakes became horrendous and I had to tell people that I wasn't an alcoholic! I'm taking carbimazole now and it seems to be helping a lot. I'm seeing the consultant next week. I just hope it doesn't go underactive now.

Apparently, there is a high risk of it recurring (50%) and as it is an autoimmune disease you are more likely to get another autoimmune disease such as type 1 diabetes.

I felt really short of breath too, especially when going up the stairs. I was not manic - I was knackered!!!

BeatTheClock · 16/10/2012 20:30

God we had them once, me too. I was so horrified I swallowed more Ovex than I should have and started drinking something called Citricidal. It is The Most Revolting Tasting Thing Ever.

monkeysbignuts · 16/10/2012 21:23

my dad had three auto immune diseases, started off with his thyroid so you could be right playschool
Glad you ladies are well now x

mudipig · 16/10/2012 21:29

Yes the stuff that put us off anything raspberry flavoured for life! There are orange flavoured very paletable tablets now. They don't know they're born!!

But no, I am living proof that threadworms does not make you lose weight, at all. Just gives you a very uncomfortable night or two and causes you a lot of washing.
