To walk my little sister home from work?

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/10/2012 16:41

She finishes at 11:30pm. Her work place is literally at the end of my street. She lives 5 minutes round the corner.

A young woman my Uncle (who is not prone to gossip or scaremongering) knows was threatened with rape on the street my sister lives off recently. He followed her telling her what he was going to do to her Angry Sad Fortunately a relative happened to drive by and noticed her looking distressed and picked her up and drove her home.

DH does not want me to walk her home, not because he fears for my safety so has offered to walk her himself, but because it will 'interrupt' our evening and I will be 'arranging my life to sit my family again' Hmm

I would have two dogs with me, so I would be safe enough imo.

My sister's OH is unable to collect her because they have children and the distance makes getting a taxi silly.

How will she get from yours to home if not taxi-able distance ? Bit confused, sorry

GrimAndHumourless · 16/10/2012 16:47

Oh right. Work to you = 5 mins

Yours to hers = 5 mins

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/10/2012 16:47

I meant it's not taxi-able because it is literally over the road and round the corner, by the time they turned the meter on she'd be home.

Work to me = 30 seconds.

My place to hers = five minutes tops.

Well that would be safe surely? So what if short distance.

lurkedtoolong · 16/10/2012 16:53

Presumably then you'd be walking back an unsafe 5 minute walk on your own? Your DH on the face of it sounds a bit U but it also sounds as though you're throwing yourself into doing something for your sister without thinking of the consequences for yourself.

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/10/2012 16:54

I would be with two dogs on my way home, my sister would be totally alone.

Presumably your dogs need walking anyway? So 2 birds with 1 stone and all that!

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/10/2012 17:42

Well they don't normally get walked that late, but it wouldn't hurt them.

No she hasn't asked but it is ten minutes out of my life to keep her safe. Ten minutes that would normally be spent smoking in the yard while the dogs are toileting ready for bed.

It would be semi regular, she doesn't work set shifts, some weeks she might work no evenings at all, some weeks she might work most evenings.

I think one off is fine, and its nice you care.
but if shes old enough to be working then she really could find a safer way of getting home.

SandStorm · 16/10/2012 17:56

If she's a grown woman, as I suspect she is seeing as she has children, does she really need walking home? Has she expressed a wish to be walked home or any concerns about it?

Your DH response does sound a bit rude on the surface, but at the same time I get the impression do you does this sort of thing often? maybe he feels like you are trying to baby her.

McHappyPants2012 · 16/10/2012 18:12

I would ask her if she wanted me to walk her own, if she accepts then I would walk her home.

WeAreEternal · 16/10/2012 18:30

I have two younger sisters and I would do this without a second thought.
In fact on many occasions I have gone well out of my way to walk both of my sisters home, they both live 15 minutes away from the town centre in opposite directions, I live 5 mins out of town in another direction entirely, so it it usually I long walk for me, but I will gladly do it to make sure my sisters get home safely.

Tell your DH to be quiet, he clearly doesn't understand the importance of being an older sibling.

As an alternative suggestion, could your sister cycle there and back? It is much safer than walking alone.

Sirzy · 16/10/2012 18:32

I would do it for my sister

Wheresmypopcorn · 16/10/2012 18:33

Yanu, I was mugged about 3 minutes away from my friend's house, I only lived a few streets down. the men were waiting in a car. This was when I lived in a nice area of London.

itsatrap · 16/10/2012 18:39

I think it lovely for you to be looking after your sister this way, it doesn't matter how old she is, she is still your little sister afterall! Its just the sort of thing my big sister would want to do for me and we are both in our 30's!

perplexedpirate · 16/10/2012 18:39

I would, but only cos it sounds convenient for the dogs. You could be having a smoke there or in the yard just as easily.

agedknees · 16/10/2012 19:37

I think you sound like a lovely big sister.

forevergreek · 16/10/2012 19:51

How old are the children? Could they be transferred from bed to buggy/ car and her dh meet her? Not ideal, but something's in life aren't

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/10/2012 21:17

She has four aged between 2 and 7, so not really feasible or fair to wake them up and move them to the car and not old enough to be left even for five minutes.

plantsitter · 16/10/2012 21:22

If my sister met me to walk me home from work so I didn't have to do it alone, I would be delighted.

If you WANT to do it, do it. If you don't really but feel you ought to, well, your DH has a point.
