So an angry punter pours a drink over a grizzling 15 month old in a pub, and then kicks the mother when she reacts, he gets a fine. I think he should have received at least a short custodial sentence for assaulting a baby and an adult.

Also raises the question, should we be more or less tolerant of children? Judging by some of the comments people obviously think he was justified. Personally I think we could all be a bit more tolerant of children. Yes they can be very annoying, and yes sometimes adults just want to escape kids. But there ARE places you can go where children are either not allowed or very unlikely to be. Also while they can be annoying, they are part of society, part of life, there are lots of things in life that are.

I flew back from holiday recently and there was a very grizzly baby who cried for about the first hour, although I found the cheesy flight attendants, the stink of aeroplane food at 2.00am more annoying than the baby.

I think that's disgraceful. It is irritating for people to have to listen to a screaming toddler/baby but we were all young once.

On the odd occasion we get a baby sitter I don't really want to hear grizzly babies either, so I don't go to a Wetherspoons. I pick somewhere that doesn't have a children's play area and a children's menu.

When I am out with my kids, I do pick places like that as I'd like to be able to eat without a barrage of tutting every time one of the kids speaks.

I know choc and there lies the debate.

Children can be annoying, that's a fact. but they've just as much right to be here as the rest of us. Part of what kids do is whinge, cry, sing, shout in public places, it's what they do. There are places that you can go where there won't be children, but if you don't go there, you may have to endure a child or 10.

IMO, it goes without saying that anyone pouring beer over a baby is just awful.

Don't think the sentance has much to do with 'debate' regarding children in public places. Obviously guy was a twat & shouldn't have done it, but it sounds like a relatively minor assault (ie pouring a drink/kicking her up the backside as opposed to breaking someone's nose etc), and if it was a first time offence i wouldn't really expect custodial sentance, no.

Aw, the poor guy just wanted a nice lunch out with his wife. No doubt when he had young kids he left them with the missus while he was able to escape for a quiet pint. That's the way it should be. Family pubs are no places for babies or children, don't you know. Or unattended females for that matter.

People don't get prison sentences for beating people up. They aren't going to get one for this. It's an awful thing to have done, he obv is complete twat, but no, he wouldn't get custodial for this.
