To think the punishment doesn't fit the crime and wonder are we really this intolerant

man pours drink over toddler

So an angry punter pours a drink over a grizzling 15 month old in a pub, and then kicks the mother when she reacts, he gets a fine. I think he should have received at least a short custodial sentence for assaulting a baby and an adult.

Also raises the question, should we be more or less tolerant of children? Judging by some of the comments people obviously think he was justified. Personally I think we could all be a bit more tolerant of children. Yes they can be very annoying, and yes sometimes adults just want to escape kids. But there ARE places you can go where children are either not allowed or very unlikely to be. Also while they can be annoying, they are part of society, part of life, there are lots of things in life that are.

I flew back from holiday recently and there was a very grizzly baby who cried for about the first hour, although I found the cheesy flight attendants, the stink of aeroplane food at 2.00am more annoying than the baby.

I think that's disgraceful. It is irritating for people to have to listen to a screaming toddler/baby but we were all young once.

How would the 'gentleman' in question like it if someone had poored a drink over his grandchild?

Terrible. People seem to think it's their right, these days, to be impatient.

BloodRedAlienReflux · 16/10/2012 12:05

JESUS!!!! what an absolute twat!!
Like someone said, it was a weatherspoons, with a childrens menu, ie: there will be children there if you hate kids so much that is your reaction, go somewhere else!!
I'd have glassed the bastard!!

chocoluvva · 16/10/2012 12:09

Dare I say it, this thread reminds me of an ongoing MN discussion.
OP, prepare for posters claiming that the baby's mum brought it on herself by letting her baby 'grizzle' in a public place and that the baby and mum will get over it, so what's the deal?

chocoluvva · 16/10/2012 12:10

Those are NOT MY views!!!!!!
Old guy completely OTT IMO.

YerMaw1989 · 16/10/2012 12:15

jesus christ how is he not being done for assualt?.

stinklebell · 16/10/2012 12:16

That's awful

On the odd occasion we get a baby sitter I don't really want to hear grizzly babies either, so I don't go to a Wetherspoons. I pick somewhere that doesn't have a children's play area and a children's menu.

When I am out with my kids, I do pick places like that as I'd like to be able to eat without a barrage of tutting every time one of the kids speaks.

WorraLiberty · 16/10/2012 12:18

choco I must be a member of a different MumsNet to you if that's what you think posters (other than perhaps a troll) would say.

ohforsucksfake · 16/10/2012 12:18

I know choc and there lies the debate.

Children can be annoying, that's a fact. but they've just as much right to be here as the rest of us. Part of what kids do is whinge, cry, sing, shout in public places, it's what they do. There are places that you can go where there won't be children, but if you don't go there, you may have to endure a child or 10.

I don't know if you're allowed to refer to other threads - apologies if I'm breaking the rules.
There's a massive ongoing thread in Chat on a very similar theme with loads of posters defending a similar reaction.

chocoluvva · 16/10/2012 12:23

IMO, it goes without saying that anyone pouring beer over a baby is just awful.

Pootles2010 · 16/10/2012 12:24

Don't think the sentance has much to do with 'debate' regarding children in public places. Obviously guy was a twat & shouldn't have done it, but it sounds like a relatively minor assault (ie pouring a drink/kicking her up the backside as opposed to breaking someone's nose etc), and if it was a first time offence i wouldn't really expect custodial sentance, no.

samandi · 16/10/2012 12:25

Aw, the poor guy just wanted a nice lunch out with his wife. No doubt when he had young kids he left them with the missus while he was able to escape for a quiet pint. That's the way it should be. Family pubs are no places for babies or children, don't you know. Or unattended females for that matter.

You can say which thread it is, choco

You mean the parking one don't you where lots of otherwise sensible posters are condoning the use of verbal aggression for a minor parking violation

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 16/10/2012 12:29

What a horrid end to what should have been a lovely morning. Who new seeing a friend, taking your child to soft play and then treating them
All to lunch could be so offensive to people. God forbid you wait for the mum to get back with a drink and some crayons :( what a nasty thing to do

ohforsucksfake · 16/10/2012 12:30

So it would seem judging by the comments.

OP posts:
wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/10/2012 12:31

If someone poured a pint over my child I would not think it was "minor".

He was the adult, the child was defenceless. Ridiculous sentence.

HappyHalloweenMotherFucker · 16/10/2012 12:32

What that bloke did was not a "minor assault"

That is a terrifying thought. What could he have done that was "major" ?

Pastabee · 16/10/2012 12:32

What a nasty bastard. I can't believe some of the comments....

Nick from Windsor says 'fair play to the man, the baby 100% deserved it'. Nick from Windsor I think you are a fuckwit.

ohforsucksfake · 16/10/2012 12:33

I don't think it's minor either.

OP posts:
chocoluvva · 16/10/2012 12:34

Yup, the parking thread, HappyHalloween.
It must be very close to 1000 posts now.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 16/10/2012 12:35

And a 15month old is IMO more a baby than a toddler.

Fakebook · 16/10/2012 12:36

He accepts he kicked her in the bottom. It wasn?t done in malice, it was just so he could have the last word.

WTAF?! Just spat my tea back into the mug laughing at that! Grin

People don't get prison sentences for beating people up. They aren't going to get one for this. It's an awful thing to have done, he obv is complete twat, but no, he wouldn't get custodial for this.
