99% of people interviewed at motorway service stations toilets claimed they had washed their hands after going to the toilet. Electronic recording devices revealed only 32% of men and 64% of women actually did.

Why is it so difficult to use a bit of soap and water for the sake of keeping poo
out of our food?

Ugh!

I don't wash my hands in public loos; I can't bring myself to touch the handles of the taps., I don't wash at home after using the loo either (unless I get shit on my hands).

I am clearly (and quite literally) one of the great unwashed

shewhowines · 16/10/2012 13:28

A question to all those non-washers using antibacterial gel to "clean" their hands- do you handle the outside of the little bottle with your bare unwashed hands before squirting it on and then shove the same germy bottle back inside your bag with your purse, keys etc? Yes? Thought so. Nice...

Exactly. Next time you get your little bottle out -its the same as touching the door. OH sorry not to worry - It's only your own germs.

I can't believe people don't want to wash their hands because of the germs on the door but are quite willing to inflict their own "unwashed' germs on others a hundredfold, sorry millionsfold. So so skanky.

Other people with your unwashed germs on their hands will then touch money etc and you'll get your own germs back second/third hand when you are handed the change - maybe within 10 mins at that same service station. So it's pointless anyway.

Gross. FGS wash your hands people then antibac if you still feel the need to.

GhostShip · 16/10/2012 13:31

Why are people being so defensive and cocky over this, like it's personally insulting you if someone choses to wash their hands in a different way to you. Christ.

Lets get some perspective.

shewhowines · 16/10/2012 13:34

Ghost because i'm offended that you're ok with giving me your extra germs on the door handle although you don't want other peoples.

Wash then antibac.

Goldmandra · 16/10/2012 13:34

But Ghostship you can use your little finger to open a door handle and rarely need to use a hand to turn off a tap these days. Then you can use the gel to sanitise your hands which are already clean apart from the tiny bit which touched the door handle.

I'd rather do that than kill 99% of the bacteria in the much larger amount of urine/faeces/vomit/mucus which is still on unwashed hands. Especially as the remaining 1% can contain the Norovirus.

You are personally insulting me and others because you don't give a shit about us.

zookeeper · 16/10/2012 13:36

shewhowines you sound completely hysterical tbh which is not really helping your case

GhostShip · 16/10/2012 13:38

Shewhowines,

It's almost as though you're wanting to find something to be insulted about.

you are personally insulting me and others because you dont give a shit about us
Oh do listen to yourself, absolute drama queen I'm afraid.

I'm a carer, of course I care. and I DO wash my hands with soap and water, depending on the establishment. But not always, if the taps look grotty, I'm not touching them. I'll stick with the next best thing that is anti bac.

Goldmandra you don;t understand infection control and how germs work if you think washing hands kills 100% of bacteria.

shewhowines · 16/10/2012 13:39

What hysterical because i can't believe how some people are so selfish?

Lovely.

zookeeper · 16/10/2012 13:40

Oh well. Shit happens.Wink

shewhowines · 16/10/2012 13:40

Sorry Ghost . I thought you were one of the ones who never washed their hands.

GhostShip · 16/10/2012 13:40

You do sound hysterical. Its not selfish, it's cleaning ones hands in a different way! Its your problem if you don't think its good enough.

You have also got to consider that sometimes in places, hand driers don't work.

GhostShip · 16/10/2012 13:41

Oh right shewhowines sorry for having a go then :)

There is NO excuse for not washing hands at all

shewhowines · 16/10/2012 13:44

No I feel the same way as others do who use the antibac because they don't like the idea of germs.

I don't go so far as using the antibac myself (so i'm not that bad). But I was getting upset at the - "I'll look after myself but don't give a dam about others" attitude.

TheDreadedFoosa · 16/10/2012 13:46

Arf @ all the lazy, grubby sods who dont wash hands after using the toilet but slather on the anti-bac gel once past the door Grin course you do!

GhostShip · 16/10/2012 13:46

I always try to wash my hands, but sometimes the places I have to use the toilet in are a bit erm... crappy, and touching the taps of these places is the last thing I want to do. You know, soap scum around the taps and stuff (bleurgh)

so anti bac has to be the next best thing!

I do appreciate a nice, clean bathroom :o ha

MrsKeithRichards · 16/10/2012 13:47

Zookeeper when the actual fuck do you wash your hands you manky midden.

BoffinMum · 16/10/2012 13:49

Amazing we all survive, isn't it?

TheDreadedFoosa · 16/10/2012 13:51

The reason the door handle is crawling with germs is because of every one of you who cant be arsed to do the basics.

I mean, bloody hell, you go to the toilet, you wash your hands...its BASIC HYGIENE! Dread to think what else you dont bother with.

And do you not feel like an utter filthbag? Are you not embarassed that others see you just walking out withouth washing? You should be...

zookeeper · 16/10/2012 13:52

let me see - I shower every morning and evening so I do then. And also when I chop onions because otherwise my eyes sting when I touch them.

GhostShip · 16/10/2012 13:55

You know, it's a wonder humans got to where we have now.

How on EARTH did we survive before running water and taps were invented?

WHY DIDN'T WE DIE?

OH THE GERMS, THE HORROR

(an by no means am I saying dont wash your hands, please do when you can, or use anti bac, im saying we all need to stop being so bloody hysterical over it, its ridiculous)

ICBINEG · 16/10/2012 13:56

as someone with a partner with OCD I could have cried when I read the article...just what I need...more paranoia about dirty surfaces.

Did anyone else read it and think I would have been fucking amazed if it hadn't turned out that my hands (warm, wet crinkly and SUPPOSED TO BE COVERED IN BACTERIA) had more bacteria than a toilet bowl (cold, hard, smooth, although admittedly wet, but often subject to bleach and toilet blocks etc.)

idiots!

Pos1 · 16/10/2012 13:58

Talking about hand washing and anti bac gels- can anyone suggest ones that are good for hands with excema? I used to wash my hands all the time and now not so much. Soap irritates them, then hand driers dry them out or lack of drying facilities also dries them out. Gels are no good. Basically all ways of washing them make the excema worse. Any suggestions? At home I use aqueous cream but it's a bit of a faff to lug that around with me all the time.......

ICBINEG · 16/10/2012 14:02

Also I have previously been a post loo hand washer...but this article kinda persuaded me not to bother. After all if I am sharing facilities with people that aren't (and hence getting their germs) and I don't get sick then why am I wasting my time?

Goldmandra · 16/10/2012 14:03

My DD had horrible eczema on her hands for a while. She used a little bottle of Dermol 500 at school for a while and I also carried one for her in my handbad. You can get it in prescription and decant it into little hand-gel bottles.
