I know it's j just telly but .. Huhhuh... Choke... It's so devastating....

I was surprised by how upset it made me. I think what made it so much worse was that her family were all there, watching her agony, and unable to help.

But I don't think it was convincing, how Lord G handled it. He showed more empathy and concern for his imprisoned valet than he did for his beloved youngest daughter. It was all very odd.

And while I know that there was nothing the doctors could do, I don't believe they would have stood arguing at the other end of the room while a young woman fought loudly for her life. Neither of them actually witnessed her passing.

Also glad that the level of general education is so much higher these days: you'd know yourself if you got a headache and swollen ankles that this was the time to be doing something about it, and if you mentioned it to a relative they'd get that car out.

I watched the episode with both my dc curled up on the settee, just thinking how grateful I am for all the monitoring and treatment that means I am seeing them grow up. I was also rather ill post-partum, but had constant monitoring throughout the night.

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 15/10/2012 10:28

I didnt know it could kill you. Guess that explains why my nan aborted dc5 after dc4 was stillborn because of eclampsia :(

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/10/2012 10:31

Sorry, but please don't put spoiler alert and then give it away in the title, it had been publicised that a major character dies this series so now I know .

Scholes34 · 15/10/2012 10:32

DD (15) also picked up the clue at the first mention of swollen ankles. I suggested she might consider a career in medicine as she was obviously doing well in science classes. She replied, coyly, that her knowledge was as a result of watching too many episodes of Call the Midwife and One Born Every Minute.

Northernlurkerisbehindyouboo · 15/10/2012 10:35

We were really upset too. I sobbed buckets.

ThisIsNotWhatIWasAfter · 15/10/2012 10:51

I thought it was Terry Pratchett related too .

valiumredhead · 15/10/2012 10:55

I cried - I would've been dead and so would ds had we been around at that time. Eek!

squoosh · 15/10/2012 11:06

Great spolier alert.

Ahem.

LoonyRationalist · 15/10/2012 12:30

I had pre-eclampsia with DD1.

My blood pressure continued to rise dramatically and alarmingly after delivery, I was on 3 different drugs to control in combination and was in hospital for 8 days with daily BP checks for another week and weekly for another 3 months. It is serious and simply delivering the baby does not resolve it immediately. I too knew she was a goner from the moment they mentioned the ankles.

valiumredhead · 15/10/2012 12:40

Me too Loony -mine took ages to come down and was still being checked daily a month after delivery.

INeedThatForkOff · 15/10/2012 12:44

Thanks for the title, I couldn't watch last night as DD was unwell Angry

Viviennemary · 15/10/2012 12:45

It was a bit too predictable for me. It was quite obvious what was going to happen. I'm usually a sucker for a sad story but this one left me unmoved.

MoetEtPantsOn · 15/10/2012 12:47

YABU for your title. What a meanie.

I've just watched a back episode of Call the Midwife, which coincidentally also had a poor woman die post partum, (in the 50s, I think?). Am feeling a bit shakey all in all.

valiumredhead · 15/10/2012 12:48

You didn't have to read the thread and it's been all over morning telly as well.
It could've been any number of story lines.

squoosh · 15/10/2012 12:50

You're right, you didn't haveto read the thread, the thread title gave it all away!

valiumredhead · 15/10/2012 12:53

But it didn't.

Her dh could've left her/been killed
Baby could've been ill
She could've realised she married the chauffeur and kicked him out Wink

squoosh · 15/10/2012 12:53

It did.

MarthasHarbour · 15/10/2012 12:59

I found it sad but educational, despite having DS1 i had no idea about the symptoms of PE. I now know about the headache and swollen ankles as a symptom.

BeckAndCall · 15/10/2012 13:00

I too knew what was coming with the swollen ankles - but I thought the point of family doctor being there was so that he could swoop in and save her. Did not expect it play out the way it did.

So why why why didn't Cora be more forceful in insisting she went to hospital - why didn't she tell her husband he knew FA about childbirth and his opinion didn't count and just make it happen!

I too think it is the end of the relAtionship for Cora and Robert..

valiumredhead · 15/10/2012 13:00

Oh honestly, so what, a thread gave the plot away, it's not like anyone died, is it? Oh er, hang on a minute....

bruffin · 15/10/2012 13:09

I had pre eclampsia and spent 7 weeks in hospital waiting for ds to be born,so I knew as soon as they said swollen ankles that it was pre eclampsia. While I was in hospital one baby died and a mum had kidney failure form it, another lady had permanent high blood pressure afterwards. It's horrible.
My mum had it with me as well but not so long.

WipsGlitter · 15/10/2012 13:10

your title has spoilt it for me...

Paiviaso · 15/10/2012 13:15

Your title is a spoiler FFS. I have to wait to buy the DVD, but now I know that something very bad happens to Syblil.

(I haven't looked at any other part of the thread!)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/10/2012 13:16

I hid the long running Downton thread yesterday and purposefully didn't put the TV on this morning. I've just watched it without reading any of this thread apart from the title but it was spoilt for me.
