There has been alot of racism recently about Polish people in the UK. Dara O'Brain in his new tour says that Irish immigrants now all work in IT so if they are booked to build your wall they go "Google it! There must be some instructions on how to build a wall!..........well translate it from Polish..." cue HUGE laugh.

I am not having a go at D O'B, I love his stuff generally but that made me feel uncomfortable. Its not just him, been a big thing in "comedy" recently.

But what is so different about what is being said about the Poles in the UK now and what was being said about black and asian immigrants in the 50's and 60's? And Irish immigrants before that?

It strikes me that the whole thing is scarily reminiscent of "Love thy Neighbour" or "Mind your Language".

My biggest shock was the my black husband didnt get it until I pointed out that a lot of the abuse his own mother suffered when she moved here in 1960 and the stuff hurled at him when he was a child was word for word the same as the "jokes" that are being told now.

AIBU to think that this should be stopped both in RL and on TV?

Otherworld · 13/10/2012 00:01

Ah. How wierd though as I've been to see that Dara tour show tonight.

I still don't see the racism in that particular section as given in tonight's show.

EverybodysSpookyEyed · 13/10/2012 00:03

I was thinking of Clare in the community too!

Great show!

It was just a guest appearance on Allan Carr, he only used a tiny bit of his material.

Bogeyface · 13/10/2012 00:17

I did say that the Dara example was a bad one.

I can put the thread in the catalogue I have of my own ill thought out threads with poor OPs and bad examples BF?

I've just added extra storage facilities, so plenty of room.

AgentZigzag · 13/10/2012 00:36

That looks as though I'm saying I think your thread is ill thought out with bad examples Grin

That's not what I meant.

PanonOlympus · 13/10/2012 00:48

you could always tweet him and ask him yourself.

btw he tweeted tonight that you were a rubbish audience. Laughed at none of the racists jokes at all.Grin

sashh · 13/10/2012 05:02

Am I the only one on here that thinks if there was any racism it was the suggestion that all Irish people work in IT, it clearly isn't so.

Hyperballad · 13/10/2012 05:16

Yer you probably are the only one that thinks that because he's a COMEDIAN!! If he was an mp or a news reader, that would be different but he is being funny, you know, ha ha and all that.

Hyperballad · 13/10/2012 05:24

Op, if your DH has been on the receiving end of racism then I think he could feel ashamed that his wife could be 'shocked' and making a big deal of some humour on the telly.

Surely you have far more important things to be 'shocked' about. You shouldn't be wasting your energy on shit like this.

TerrorNotSoFrightened · 13/10/2012 08:44

YANBU
I do think the example you used is very tame and isn't racist. It is just comedy.
But I do feel that the attitudes towards polish immigrants is similar to that of immigrants when my dad/grandfather was young.
I hear no end of "coming over here, taking our jobs" "look at all the polish grocery shops" things like that.

A friend made one such comment, I asked if he thought it might be a bit racist, he replied no it wasn't racist because they are white Hmm

FreakySnuckerCupidStunt · 13/10/2012 09:50

Oh my gosh, someone told a mildly offensive joke? The horror! You are being unreasonable and entirely too sensitive.
