to be shocked at the accepted racism on TV at the moment?

There has been alot of racism recently about Polish people in the UK. Dara O'Brain in his new tour says that Irish immigrants now all work in IT so if they are booked to build your wall they go "Google it! There must be some instructions on how to build a wall!..........well translate it from Polish..." cue HUGE laugh.

I am not having a go at D O'B, I love his stuff generally but that made me feel uncomfortable. Its not just him, been a big thing in "comedy" recently.

But what is so different about what is being said about the Poles in the UK now and what was being said about black and asian immigrants in the 50's and 60's? And Irish immigrants before that?

It strikes me that the whole thing is scarily reminiscent of "Love thy Neighbour" or "Mind your Language".

My biggest shock was the my black husband didnt get it until I pointed out that a lot of the abuse his own mother suffered when she moved here in 1960 and the stuff hurled at him when he was a child was word for word the same as the "jokes" that are being told now.

AIBU to think that this should be stopped both in RL and on TV?

think most in Scotland would agree too

Bogeyface · 12/10/2012 23:28

I accept that the example I used may not have been racist so in that IABU, but I still feel uncomfortable about the Eastern Europe based casual racism that seems to be going on.

I didnt say that he shouldnt be on TV, I like him alot! It was just that comment that bothered me. It isnt about him but about what is seen as acceptable.

The problem with humour for me s when it is pointing and sneering at a group of people from a position of perceived superiority.

Being of Irish descent I don't feel inferior so I don't feel like I need protecting from jokes which laugh about stereotypes. I would be surprised if many in the Polish community feel like that.

So I am not concerned about being wrong but I am certainly not a racist.

look you're v confused between racism and close to bone humour
your example isn't racist,
I think Dara is fab

wannabedomesticgoddess · 12/10/2012 23:32

There was a group of six and they were laughing at women walking past. Comments like fat and ugly, slut, asking for it. Nothing especially unusual. But then they were going up to some of them and trying to talk to them and then the rest were standing laughing.

My friend is Polish so she was translating.

fluffypillow · 12/10/2012 23:34

The sad thing is, it's got to the point where people are scared to say anything incase they are accused of being racist. This post proves that.

this op was an earnest nonstarter
your dp didn't find it funny til you had to prompt him

Bogeyface · 12/10/2012 23:40

I am not confusing racism with anything. If you had ever seen proper "in your face" racism then you would know that it cant be confused with anything.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 12/10/2012 23:40

wannabe your friends aren't atypical poles, they're wankers
denigrating women isn't a polish thang it's a wanker thang
hth

Bogeyface · 12/10/2012 23:41

I didnt prompt him at all!

I asked him to compare it to the stuff that he and his mum went through, and then he got it. I was just surprised that he didnt make that connection himself.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 12/10/2012 23:42

the Dara example isn't racist, nor fear inducing, you're exagerating
now aside from this if you've experienced in yer face racism that's ghastly
but still not applicable to your Dara example

wannabedomesticgoddess · 12/10/2012 23:43

Yes, but to do it in their accent and then go up to the girls. English speaking dickheads couldnt be that callous.

I was just simply pointing out that no group of people is without fault. And the polish can give as good as they get.

Racism is where a person feels superior and holds that over the victim group. The polish are not thought of as inferior the way other groups were.

WorraLiberty · 12/10/2012 23:44

There's nothing to connect though...maybe that's why he didn't connect it?

Pagwatch · 12/10/2012 23:44

I have seen 'in your face' racism.
I am still not of the view that this was racism.

scottishmummy · 12/10/2012 23:45

biggest shock is black dh didn't get it until pointed out
you had to prompt your dh as you say pointed out
you're getting somewhat mixed up

Well IMO insulting someone in a different language is pretty low. Obviously just me.

AgentZigzag · 12/10/2012 23:48

The OPs said she doesn't think it was the best example to use SM, she's admitted it wasn't racist.

I would say lay off her if I dared (CWBs too much?)

scottishmummy · 12/10/2012 23:49

surprised he didn't make that connection himself
yes you had to prompt dh to see your pov
he didn't spontaneously see racism til you helpfully pointed out his error

Just how many of us were in the audience at Dara's show tonight?

Was there a MN meet up that I missed?

Loved the show - laughed until I cried. But really? Racism is not what I got from it...

DameFannyGallopsAtaGhost · 12/10/2012 23:55

Anyone else reading this in the style of 'Claire in the Community'?
