to "libberate" buttons from shop stock?

More of a WIBU really. The shop that I buy clothes from has stopped providing spare buttons on them. So if I buy a top and the button cones off (frequently - things aren't made as good qual as they used to be) I'm left with an unwearable top. So WIBU to take my kwikunpick in the changing room and "borrow" a spare? Can't think if any other way of dealing with this.

The button wasn't there in the first place.

Are you seriously not wearing a top that cost £35 because of a missing button?!

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 12/10/2012 13:32

Yanbu as that is Crap customer service

Graciescotland · 12/10/2012 13:32

Why don't you just buy a complete set of replacement buttons to go on the old top?

EldritchCleavage · 12/10/2012 13:33

Oh, for heaven's sake. Can you honestly not think of any solution other than stealing a button and leaving the shop with an unsaleable top?

Any time you are getting rid of something, snip the buttons off and keep them in a button box for future use. Or, John Lewis.com buy some spare buttons. What a useless excuse for vandalism and theft.

MrsKeithRichards · 12/10/2012 13:33

Or ask at a charity shop, many keep buttons of stuff that's going to rag as spares.

cryinshaim · 12/10/2012 13:33

Why on earth should I have to resew buttons on or pay for replacement buttons?

OP posts:
MrsKeithRichards · 12/10/2012 13:33

Or buy two of everything!

WeaselChutney · 12/10/2012 13:33

Just go and buy a new set of buttons from a haberdashers. You can buy buttons for approx 25p. Then you can replace the buttons and have a spare in case one of those falls off.

I often change the buttons on clothes, it's a very thrifty way of completely changing the look of a cardigan or shirt and makes a cheap top look better quality.

Btw, YABU, solution to your problem offered above.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 12/10/2012 13:34

I think the op was sarcastic but her point is if its so shocking for them to sell tops without a full set of buttons (which it would be) why is it ok that she has pe missing after one wear, withno chance of a replacement.

MadgeHarvey · 12/10/2012 13:34

Oh the button wasn't there in the first place? You only just decided to mention that?

Pfffffft.

MrsKeithRichards · 12/10/2012 13:35

Ya know, I've got to the grand old age of almost 30 and I've never had to replace a button!

cryinshaim · 12/10/2012 13:35

But its not vandalism and theft is it? Its philosophising about vandalism and theft in lite of shabby quality clothes?

OP posts:
Indith · 12/10/2012 13:35

Don't be absurd.

There are shops that sell buttons you know. Buttons. Loose. Lots of them. For people who sew. jsut saying. You might find some similar ones there. And if you can't find a similar one you could use that unpicker of yours you seem desperate to get use out of to unpick all of the buttons on your top and replace them all with some other buttons you like.

MadgeHarvey · 12/10/2012 13:36

Lite? Is that a word? What does it mean - like 'lite' butter or something?

I declare a wind up

[gavel]

LadyMargolotta · 12/10/2012 13:36

I always reinforce buttons to prevent them falling off.

Buttons are rarely sewed on well enough, presumably due to limiting labour costs.

WeaselChutney · 12/10/2012 13:36

Check the buttons/seams/for holes before you buy an item.

I would never buy anything without checking it is not faulty. I live a long way from my nearest shop and the last thing I want to do is trek back and replace it.

It is completely your responsibility to check the condition of an item before you buy it. The shop was unaware that it was damaged and were not deliberately selling you faulty goods.

cryinshaim · 12/10/2012 13:36

Thank you - Bear. It was an OP in extremis.

If the button wasn't there in the first place what you do is you take the top back with the receipt and you ask for an exchange or a refund. I am a little confused as to why this concept has not crossed your mind.

ContinentalKat · 12/10/2012 13:37

Ooh, I am happy to post my first ever Biscuit!

cryinshaim · 12/10/2012 13:38

Pfffft yourself. The button missing was only the inspiration for the thoughts. Not the whole reason for the purported actions. Hmm

OP posts:
LadyMargolotta · 12/10/2012 13:38

Did you not notice the button missing when you wore it for the first time? You do say that you wore it before you washed it.

cryinshaim · 12/10/2012 13:38

Because it had been worn.

EldritchCleavage · 12/10/2012 13:39

Why on earth should I have to resew buttons on

I'm guffawing at this. Is your name Marie Antointette? Or Edward Scissorhands?

MajesticWhine · 12/10/2012 13:40

It's called stealing.
