To not want my dd to have sugary food?

I admit I'm quite strict about what I let dd (13mo) eat and I do not let her eat too much 'junk' but I do let her have the odd bit of cake, crisps ect. But I'm so fed up so friends and family saying
'aw don't be mean, just let her have a bit'
'a small bit won't hurt'
'she's missing out'
'when she's older she'll resent you'

Is it so unreasonable that I want my dd to eat healthy food? I really don't understand why everyone wants me to give her chocolate and sweets all the time. My mum is the worst. She doesn't understand why I don't feed her chips and sausges everyday. My dd likes fruit and vegetables! surely it's a good thing??? Am I just the weird one?
Sorry got a bit carried away there but I'm still angry at my mum giving dd a whole donut for breakfast!

5 a day does not mean 5 pieces of FRUIT a day.

It means 5 portions of fruit AND veg, but it's healthiest if mostly veg. Actually if it was ONLY veg it would be fine. I'd hazard a guess that most children eat fewer than 3 proper sized portions of veg a day.

Queen you are right, sucrose and other sugars turn to glucose in the blood, but fructose is processed by the liver.

IMO those high density fruit 'snacks' like Winders which market themselves as healthy because they can be called one of a child's 5 a day are absolutely hideous.

Sucrose is actually one molecule of glucose and one molecule of fructose so half of it gets processed by the liver. We really aren't designed for the amount of fructose in the modern diet.

I think its great to get them used to all the healthy stuff first before allowing them odd small treats.

I totally agree that sugar does not need to be introduced to our children as a normal thing to constantly eat and drink. I have a huge problem with juice and can't believe it is still considered by most people to be healthy for children.

My husband has started using the promise of honey on weetabix as a bribe for our four year old and I am livid! He has always been happy to have it or porridge plain or just with raisins. Of course raisins are arguably pretty awful too.

YADNBU. We gave our kids sweets on a Saturday, but that's when they remember to ask. Actually, they seem to prefer crisps and fruit juices. I've banned fruit juices because of the acid and how sugary they are, but they get it on special occasions, and fizzy drinks are out, full stop. I agree with other posters, fruit snacks, and a lot of fruit, is bad, but at least fruits like melon or oranges are partially healthy, and it's better that they have some fruits as tasty snacks than not.

Totally totally agree. My dd is 3 and I don't make an issue of sweets etc. She has a bit of cake now and then just like she has a bit of toast or a few raisins or some milk and she doesn't see it as an issue. She doesn't like sweets though, prefers cake :o I don't want to make it really desirable by telling her its a "treat" so I just say thats one of the foods you can't eat too much of. At 13 months though I tried to limit it a lot more than I do now.
