To think I have been a complete and utter prat

I run a commercial cleaning company and recently won a new contract. After much pressure from hubby and in-laws I gave the cleaning job to brother in law who I was assured would do a good job.
Day 1 he turned up in bermuda shorts (I made him go change) and then got confused when he was vaccing a corridor as he got half way down and ran out of wire. He had to get me to explain the idea of plugging it in a different socket.
I cannot sack him as he is a relative, but have a bad feeling I will be losing this contract soon.
Worse still he has informed me he is not telling the benefits office even though I have explained I have to send his NI number to HMRC.
I know I have been a total prat!

I have a feeling you'll be losing all your contracts, with such a pisspoor attitude and a bizarro anger problem

ginslinger · 10/10/2012 15:38

maybe we should ask the OP if she meant to sound so rude?

HawthornLantern · 10/10/2012 15:39

You weren't an idiot to hire him but you would be a if you carried on without doing something.

Your BIL is young and apparently stupid (or at best oblivious to the consequences of his actions, maybe because he's never experienced any before) - but as you have reported his details to HMRC as required (I think that was in the deleted post) then the rest of the legal aspects are up to him. So that aspect's all sorted out from your perspective.

As for the rest - your choices are to give him a chance of training - set a probation period so he knows the groundrules clearly or sack him instantly. I'm a bit soft-hearted so I'd be inclined to give him chance - which could also be looked on as giving him enough rope to hang himself in case the rest of the family complain about unfair treatment.

The other part of the equation is your obligation to the company you have signed a contract with. If you keep him on, what are you doing/ what can you do to make sure that the service they receive is adequate? Do they know they have a trainee? Can you offer them a discount rate perhaps (which at the very least might mitigate damage to your reputation if he messes up).

So I don't think you are necessarily unreasonable but at the same time Worra's point was on the nail. You would be very unreasonable to carry on.

BearWithBearWith · 10/10/2012 15:39

Worra - don't even give a reason - you owe no explanation to anyone.

I am glad she thinks your opinions are dumb because, as I feel the opposite, that puts you and me in the same mind.

WorraLiberty · 10/10/2012 15:39

Was she rude gins? I hadn't noticed.... Grin

ginslinger · 10/10/2012 15:40

I think the OP is enjoying making an utter prat of herself. She is rather good at it don't you think ?

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 10/10/2012 15:46
LadyBeagleEyes · 10/10/2012 15:47

Can anyone tell me what her last post said please (just a general gist).

BearWithBearWith · 10/10/2012 15:48

Worra - a filthy mind? Maybe that's why Mrs R Clean&Mean has no respect for you Wink

lisaro · 10/10/2012 15:49

wanders in have I missed a flounce?

Dogsmom · 10/10/2012 15:49

Awwwwwww! I missed the posts that have been deleted.

BearWithBearWith · 10/10/2012 15:53

To update those who missed OP's last post: OP stated that she had nothing but the most upright respect for Worra. Ne'r a day goes by when she doesn't log on to see how she must conduct herself as bequeathed by Worra. Perhaps I paraphrase....?

WorraLiberty · 10/10/2012 15:55

You left out my arse, Bear

She did say I've got a gorgeous arse didn't she?

Please say yes

flyoverthegoldenhill · 10/10/2012 15:55

deleted posts were only because the OP posted inAIBU, and didn't actually want anyone to say she was an utter prat. Lisaro yep you missed the flounce. Do you think she'll get the new cleaning contract at MNHQ ?

ginslinger · 10/10/2012 15:55

she said you had a gorgeous arse considering you were such a fucking dimwit

BearWithBearWith · 10/10/2012 15:56
