An I the only parent that don't freeze sandwiches

Hot topic on the break table today was this.

There was 7 parents on the table and they all do it, after googling it is possible.

Aibu to think I am not the only person who doesn't freeze sandwiches.

It does make sense as you can do a weeks worth ahead of time and just grab one out of the freezer and bung everything else in the bag.

I used to do this when I was a child (make a month's sandwiches and freeze), saved time in the morning. They were fine, not great, but fine - and not soggy.
But this was in the days when a sarnie was a piece of ham and two bits of bread. Now they're all embellished with health it might not work so well.

ThreeEdgedSword · 09/10/2012 19:33

I freeze bread, it means I've got an emergency supply (in case I get snowed in/bank card breaks/can't be arsed with tescos).

Can't imagine freezing a sandwich though. DPs go into the fridge the night before, because I refuse to get up at 5.30 in the morning to make his bloody lunch Grin

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2012 19:36

Our local Aldi's bread always seems a bit defrosted IYKWIM. Defrosted bread is not the same, and the freezer does strange things to bread rolls IMO.

UsingAPsuedonym · 09/10/2012 19:42

Night before people -what do you put in them? Surely jam or tuna would go soggy. Salad would go hard etc?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/10/2012 20:15

Night before - anything so long as there is butter to stop it soaking in to the bread. Salad is fine.

McHappyPants2012 · 09/10/2012 20:17

I do plain sandwiches, then a salad bowl with that there is a yogurt, fruit, orange juice and a treat item such as a cereal bar.

My mum used to do this. They're horrible.

However, frozen milk is fine, as is cheese.

CaliforniaLeaving · 09/10/2012 21:15

I don't do this either. I make sandwiches for Dd fresh in the morning as I never know what I'm going to put in it. Dh's sandwiches I make the night before and box up and leave in the fridge. He leaves at 4.30am, no way I'm getting up for that.

TheFogsGettingThicker · 09/10/2012 21:27

I do ham or jam (strawberry) sandwiches the night before. They are eaten with out further comment, so they must be okay. They are wrapped in clingfilm (not actually allowed in our school) and don't look soggy.

I am repulsed at the idea of freezing them!

kiwigirl42 · 09/10/2012 21:38

I can't believe how many wives make their husbands sarnies. don't tell DH, for gods sake!

RedBlanket · 09/10/2012 21:38

I do it

saves time in the morning and also means I don't have to worry about if we've got enough ham/cheese/tuna every day. There's nothing worse than realising someone's has a midnight feast the packed lunch ingredients.

They aren't soggy and I store them in grease proof paper in a Tupperware box so they bread doesnt go hard.

nokidshere · 09/10/2012 21:42

I hate making up lunchboxes but do them all the night before and keep in the fridge till morning.

I know that they can be frozen but I can't actually bring myself to do it!!!

hmc · 09/10/2012 21:48

I don't freeze sandwiches, no need- I do make 5 days worth on Sunday evening, cling film them and place them in an airtight container. The fillings are cheese x2, marmite, ham and chicken. Bread keeps in the fridge for 5 days, as does sandwich meat and cheese - hence it follows that they also stay sufficiently fresh when combined in a sandwich. It does save time so is a no brained IMO

hmc · 09/10/2012 21:49

'brainer'

Moln · 09/10/2012 21:50

Knew it could be done but I've never done it. Not had the need, first time I knew of someone doing it was when I was at school, a friend's mum was very ill and a batch of sandwiches made for her and her brothers and sisters at the weekend for school.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 09/10/2012 21:51

I do my and DS's packed lunches in the evening before they're needed. I just don't have time in the mornings, so get everything together the night before, then they go into the fridge. I've never frozen sandwiches as I'm not keen on frozen bread, except for toast.

EasilyBored · 09/10/2012 22:04

This makes me feel a bit queasy. Soggy bread is vile; when the tomato makes the bread all wet it makes my skin crawl. But I'm funny about the texture of food anyway.

How old do kids have to be before you can make them make their own sandwiches (eyes 9 month old DS hopefully...)

Lollyheart · 09/10/2012 22:05

I make mine the night before, had no complaints so far Grin
Ewwww surly the bread would go soggy.

Iceland sell frozen sarnies apparently.

trixymalixy · 09/10/2012 22:09

I don't but I am thinking about it.

Those of you that freeze sandwiches, do tiuna mayo freeze well?

Titsalinabumsquash · 09/10/2012 22:15

I don't and I freeze most things. Although I will admit to having an emergency lunchbox drawer in my freezer Blush
Everytime I see Frubes/Cheese strings/bread rolls ( yes so shoot me ) or if I make excess muffins or cake I stick a portion in there so I never get to the point of "oh shit I've got nothing to put in the lunch boxes" I also make the night before because I'm really not great in the mornings. Grin

TheDetective · 09/10/2012 22:18

Fruitshoot ya Tits Grin

fluffypillow · 09/10/2012 22:26

I make the sarnies fresh in the mornings. Can't stand the thought of frozen bread, let alone frozen sandwiches. Although I am stupidly fussy

BeatTheClock · 09/10/2012 22:27

I don't either. The reason being that I used to have them when I was at home growing up though. A defrosted sandwich is a very depressing item to find in your lunchbox.

Chandon · 09/10/2012 22:34

fine if you have no taste buds, I guess.

I think it tastes horrible.

I think supermarket sandwiches are horrible too.

how depressing can a lunchbox be?

whois · 10/10/2012 07:59

Mum used to freeze mine. If you're only making a packed lunch for one then it's a pain to buy rolls every day, and I liked totally plain sandwiches as a kid (no butter, no mayo, no salad!) so mum would buy a pack of nice rolls, make up 5 sandwiches and freeze. I'd get a box of chopped cucumber and baby toms to eat separately. I thought they tasted fine as a kid. Probably wouldn't be that keen now, adult chutneys and salads probably don't do too well.
