An I the only parent that don't freeze sandwiches

Hot topic on the break table today was this.

There was 7 parents on the table and they all do it, after googling it is possible.

Aibu to think I am not the only person who doesn't freeze sandwiches.

It does make sense as you can do a weeks worth ahead of time and just grab one out of the freezer and bung everything else in the bag.

My mum used to do this and the results were not pretty. I never ate them. I would never do this. Those of you who do should be aware your kids are most likely not eating them.

Tiggles · 09/10/2012 18:18

Yep, at home no probs with no butter, but any ready made sandwiches/rolls etc all have butter in. Oh and the sandwich falls to pieces with nothing to stick it together.

GoSakuramachi · 09/10/2012 18:19

It takes 30 seconds to slap a sandwich together, why would you freeze them so you can have soggy nasty sandwiches?

nm123 · 09/10/2012 18:20

I only found out when a funny (male) friend of mine told me he buys the sandwiches on offer from benji's (do they still exist?) and freezes them...!

Never tried it but can't see why not. I've used frozen bread in the mornings to keep the sandwich 'fresh' for lunch when I I used to live somewhere hot.

I wonder how well cheese & pickle does??

nm123 · 09/10/2012 18:20

Or tuna mayo with avocado? That's my current fave.

Sparklingbrook · 09/10/2012 18:20

Exactly Little. And I have to tell DC's friends Mums and they look at me like this Shock.

WorraLiberty · 09/10/2012 18:21

Bleurrgh no I don't freeze sandwiches

My Mum used to freeze bread and it was never as soft afterwards.

catgirl1976 · 09/10/2012 18:23

My DH won't eat anything that's been frozen

Making him a) a weirdo and b) a PITA as batch cooking would be a godsend

Wouldn't freeze sandwiches though - soggy bread bleurgh :(

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/10/2012 18:23

No, never have, never would, takes about 30s to make sandwiches, I just do it alongside the night before's dinner and pop them in the fridge overnight.

notactuallyme · 09/10/2012 18:24

I freeze mine. It takes bloody. Ages to make 4. Sandwiches and then assemble all the bits for the lunchboxes. And then get ready and go to work after the school run.

WorraLiberty · 09/10/2012 18:26

It would take me a few minutes to make 4 sandwiches

MaryZed · 09/10/2012 18:26

Presumably it would be ok for ham, cheese, chicken, jam - plain sandwiches.

The thought of freezing cucumber, lettuce, tomato or any type of healthy filling salad is bleurgh, though.

And the bread would be soggy.

Shutupanddrive · 09/10/2012 18:32

No, it doesn't take long to make a few sandwiches does it. And if your really short of time then make them up the night before and keep in the fridge

Quadrangle · 09/10/2012 18:34

Can you freeze a pack of ham then?

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 09/10/2012 18:37

have never done it
I'd have to assemble the other components of the lunch anyway, and we normally have little tuppaware with chopped fruit and veg, so chucking some sliced meat between bread is probably the least time consuming bit.

FryOneGhoulishGhostlyManic · 09/10/2012 18:38

I don't freeze sandwiches, but I'm teaching the DCs to make their own so it won't be long until I never have to do it again anyway.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 09/10/2012 18:40

Never frozen a sandwich in my life. It seems like a pretty bizarre thing to do to me!

dixiechick1975 · 09/10/2012 18:47

I used to freeze dd's when she was on packed lunches - ham, cheese or dairylea. I used to buy a loaf of the bread she liked and make all in one go. Wraps also freeze well. They were fine.

Lunch was then an assembly job. Made sense as I was just doing them for her. Also saved bread going off when we were doing slimming world so she was the only one having bread.

happybubblebrain · 09/10/2012 18:48

I have never frozen a sandwich and the last time I froze bread was about 1994. Bread that's been in the freezer tastes of freezer when it comes out and it's revolting. I hardly freeze anything.

Also, does it really save that much time. A sandwich takes less than a minute to make.

digerd · 09/10/2012 19:12

I always had school dinners - yuck in the 50s and 60s, and we didn't even have a fridge never mind a freezer. Now I put sliced bread in the fridge which lasts for ages, but never frozen it. Salad stuff in a sandwich always goes limp/soggy unless eaten immediately. Butter was yummy in Germany, but here is not nice and margarine I have always hated

notactuallyme · 09/10/2012 19:14

God I am so tempted to time how long it takes to butter 8 slices, add marmite/ pretend ham/ grated cheese and then report back - let's do it!

digerd · 09/10/2012 19:15

ps mum baked her own bread and cakes as did not work in the 50s - she loved it, but also loved her part-time job in the 60s

cheekydevil · 09/10/2012 19:23

Yes quad you can freeze packs of ham. Useful as they are usually on offer if you buy 2 packs.

exoticfruits · 09/10/2012 19:26

I have never frozen a sandwich.

Inneedofbrandy · 09/10/2012 19:28

Apparently all the major supermarkets freeze them and set them out to defrost next day.
