to think kitchen bins are revolting

Horrible things. never seen one yet that doesn't have something dribbling down the inside of it.
Kids just chuck stuff in with gay abandon and they get revoltingly full as no one wants to be the one to empty it so you end up playing an unwilling game of binaroo.
So now just have 2 carrier bags on cupboard doors. One with general waste, one for food scraps and they get chucked at least twice a day into wheelie bin/ chicken run.
Anyone else abandoned bins?

I have a bin!

I don't use it, I use the bag on the door. Mainly because I cba to empty the bin.

There was always a drip of some sort that made its way out of the bag and down the side of the kitchen units.

Yep I have! Largely because my dog very quickly learnt how to get in it! We do the same; just carrier bags, one for general rubbish and me for recycling (all our recycling here goes in one big bin).

I haven't abandoned bins because my kitchen bin is shocking pink and matches my toaster, kettle etc. Also, the thought of carrier bags hanging off door handles is more revolting to me than an overflowing, stinky bin!

But, I do agree, they are disgusting. I empty mine every two days even if its only half full because I hate squidging everything down when it's totally full and then you get the stink cloud in your face.

Also, why does bin juice always dribble off the bottom even when a) there's nothing particularly liquidy in the bin and b) there aren't any holes in the bag through which liquid could escape?

I have 4 bins in my kitchen for different waste materials, I have a bin liner in each which keeps them clean so no problems with them really.

We have a food waste caddy, so no dribblings in our bin.

Lidded tin beside sink for food waste, which is recycled, most bottles, cartons and containers now put in recycling boxes, so we have a carrier for the few other items, such as plastic wrapping and cling film. Generally cleanish, given all the drippy stuff goes in the tin (or the dog). And carrier bag is easily lifted out to wheelie bin.

I went for a much smaller bin recently. The layout of our house meant that we were often getting greeted with a background bad smell when we came home from work. The place smells much nicer now with a 30 l bin.

I have a kitchen bin, big one too. But they always have a bag in it and we never have stuff dribbling down it, inside or out. It is cleaned on the outside and lid most days, and on the inside weekly. DH empties the bin every couple of days.
We also have a recycling bin with space for glass/tins and space for paper/card. Tins/bottles are rinsed before they go in. Emptied every couple of days.

I can't be doing with taking everything down a flight of stairs every time I want to throw it away - so the bin stays.

I hate kitchen bins too. Some years back I went away for a long weekend and foolishly left slovenly, twatty EXP in charge of taking the bins out on the Friday morning. It was mid-summer and scorching hot, the bin was full.

He didn't take the bin out. By the time I arrived home on Tuesday evening the kitchen was full of flies and the bin was full of maggots .

Despite the fact that DH is much, much less slovenly and is really rather handy round the house, I can't bring myself to get another kitchen bin... I am still scarred by the maggots

We have two reusable bags for recycling. Anything that can't be thrown in the recycling goes in a carrier bag on cupboard door, said carrier bag gets thrown out each morning. Sloppy leftover food gets disposed of down the loo. I figure that's where it would ahve gone if we had eaten it?! Or is that a v wrong thing to do? We live in a 3rd floor flat with no garden.

I might get a teeny bin to put the carrier bag in as we too have leakage issues, except that the carrier bag would then just leak into the bin and get all pongy and at risk of maggot infestation.

Yep, we just use a carrier bag on the back of the kitchen door which gets emptied once a day (or more often if needed). I have a plastic bin that gets used for (clean) recycling which gets to fill up before I decant it into the recycling box outside.

We have a food waste thing under the sink which gets emptied daily, so bin has no smelly stuff in.
My bin is pristine, and gets polished once a week.

I have no problem with bins. We only use one bin a week, the rest is recycled (good recycling collections here)

get a garbage disposal unit fitted in your sink - all slops/food goes in there. DH hooked mine up.

then the bin just gets packets etc - or whatever doesn't go into the recycling bin

I have a dog, so have a well licked sparkly clean bin. (emptied every day because of said dog)

My bin is clean, and got a car air freshener stuck to the lid.

We have a bag, it gets stuff put in it after breakfast and then goes in the bin on the way out to do the school run, same in the evening, we have a bag for rubbish generated during making dinner and it goes in the outside bin immediately afterwards.

Where are you all getting all the carrier bags?

if your bin has a lid I am not sure how it would get full of maggots?

anyway I have one - I have no problem emptying it and I use a bin bag - it's not dirty and it's not over used as I recycle most things
