AIBU?

to think kitchen bins are revolting

Horrible things. never seen one yet that doesn't have something dribbling down the inside of it.
Kids just chuck stuff in with gay abandon and they get revoltingly full as no one wants to be the one to empty it so you end up playing an unwilling game of binaroo.
So now just have 2 carrier bags on cupboard doors. One with general waste, one for food scraps and they get chucked at least twice a day into wheelie bin/ chicken run.
Anyone else abandoned bins?

I got to the post about 'bin juice' before I went BLEEEUUURRGHHH!!! and scrolled down to where I get to mention I use a miniature version of those metal bins you often have in gardens and I dislike it but have little choice as it has to fit under the sink else the dog gets in it.

My parents caved in and bought a Brabantia after I raved about the one at work. Never, ever smelt a thing while it was closed. The best bin is the kind you don't ever have to touch, although it's a sod to find one with a pedal that doesn't break after a few months.

Just empty it every day.

They are disgusting. However my kitchen is o. The first floor and I hate carrier bags on door handles, kitchen tops etc.

Very rare to get a carrier bag without holes in. Much rather my bin with bin liner then a manky dripping carrier bag where you bump past it going in and out of the kitchen.

Carrier bags are much worse. Things drip out of them. A dirty pizza box or anything else bulky that won't recycle doesn't fit in. The handles break and stuff drops on the floor. They need taking to the wheelie bin every day. They are outside the cupboards (ugly) or inside (inconvenient).

Stainless steel bin gets emptied about once a week, never smells (no nappies, little food waste as we are vegetarians and compost peelings). The main smelly thing is hamster bedding, but the bin tends to get emptied soon after hamster clean-out anyway.

Kitchen bin for us it's not huge and it's emptied by either me or my husband as soon as it needs emptying.

Every time it's emptied I clean it inside and out.It has a bin bag in it so the bin never smells bad.

I would hate the carrier bag on door look as well Yuck.

Does no one worry about using all those carrier bags?Confusedthey're not biodegradable we use the bin bags that are.

How much rubbish do you lot generate? Shock

I have:
food waste caddy with a compostable liner
a brabantia with a bin bag inside
large crate for all recyclables

They all get emptied once a week whether they are full or not.
Mind you, we do have a good recycling/waste collection service, which helps as long as you remember which bin goes out in which week

My parents have the weirdest system for bins, I get Angry when I stay there as it's just madness not having a general bin! They have a box under the sink for some recycling stuff, food waste in compost in the pantry (or whatever they call it), paper in a tiny bin elsewhere...arrrrgghhhh!

We have a food waste bin with a good seal and what was the general kitchen bin that food rarely goes in. It has made a difference to having a manky bin... so long as food doesnt get put in the general bin

I have 2 lidded contains on my window sill. One for compost and one for bread and food scraps for the birds/foxes/squirells.
In the corner have a plastic box for stuff that needs recyclying and in the other corner s swing bin for rubbish. All get emptied and wiped over daily.
If your bin smells or is overflowing it is because you cant be arsed to empty it and wipe it.

I hang a bag on the inside of my undersink cupboard door from two hooks.

Yes, they are revolting. We put bicarb in the bottom of the bin, before the binbag, which helps, and we compost. I think a kitchen bin needs emptying quite frequently, though. I wouldn't use a carrier bag because they usually have holes in and also I think it would look messy and be less sealed in.

The bin gets emptied every day and also has a wipe down daily.

A carrier bag is awful imo - they have holes, split, not big enough. If your bin is dirty it's not its fault it's YOURS for not cleaning it Wink

YANBU - I feel the same towards them too. Never use them at home in the UK

However, I'm currently in a 6th floor apartment with no lift, and it's too cold to go out, so have decided to use a lil mop bucket type thing with a bin liner, for the time being. :)

Carrier bags (for the most part) have holes in them. I empty my bin every other day. It doesn't smell

Carrier bags on doors are yuk! How can that possibly be nicer then good regularly emptied bin? We always use extra strength refuse sack in ours which stop any bin juice escape. I am currently considering swapping to a smaller bin and putting it in a cupboard but this is just to save floor space as our kitchen is tiny.

We have a bin.

DH empties it almost daily.

I clean/bleach the lid weekly and clean/bleach the bin once a month.

But I agree with the bin juice and the stink cloud. That's why DH does it!

Report
Aniseeda · 10/10/2012 14:28

Yes, they are vile but DH mainly empties ours so I just ignore it! I clean the lid when it starts to get on my nerves, DH washes it out fully once in a blue moon!

I hate carrier bags on doors more, my parents have this system and it always seems more effort/mankier to me. It's harder to scrape food off plates into a bag, imho, so more likely to spill onto the floor.

Yep- bins are crazy. I just leave old food and packets and stuff in piles next to the window for local squirrels to take away when they're hungry/building a nest.

I got rid of our bin when I put my back out trying to remove the bin bag that was wedged too bloody tight. Which was down to other people being too sodding lazy to empty it when it was full, and just pushing the rubbish down.

I was also sick to death of seeing the Leaning Tower of Rubbish balanced on the lid when they could wedge no more.

Now we use carrier bags. We have a food caddy and recycle plastic and cans so it's not messy

Keep your bins clean, empty them regularly, have a nice bin to begin with. Far nicer than nasty grubby carrier bags hung on door handles dripping and smelling the place up.
