To prefer holidays in the UK?

Met up with a group of friends yesterday (from my NCT group so all with young children). We got to talking about holidays and I said I prefer holidays in the UK. They all looked at me like I suggested I enjoyed skinning kittens.

For me its the cost of going abroad, plus we have been on some fabulous UK holidays which have trumped the couple of foreign holidays we have taken by miles.

AIBU.

I prefer UK holidays. YANBU.

SammyTheSwedishSquirrel · 07/10/2012 09:20

I prefer UK holidays too. The only 'advantage' in foreign holidays is the sun, which I hate as I get sunburnt just thinking about it. I no longer live in the UK but we always travel back for our hols so not a cheaper option for us.

Arithmeticulous · 07/10/2012 09:21

I'm only going somewhere I can go with a car that I have spent a week slowly stuffing to the roof with the entire contents of the house and garage.

Enigmosaurus · 07/10/2012 09:21

Yanbu. I love holidaying in the UK.

autumnlights12 · 07/10/2012 09:23

YABU. I like my holidays hot, not chilly and wet! And I like to experience a different.culture. We had a lovely week in center parcs, but it pissed down most days. And was so expensive. We paid the same for a luxury villa in Spain for a.week with its own pool and guaranteed gorgeous sunshine every day.

Sirzy · 07/10/2012 09:23

YANBU UK holidays are great, much better with young children to IMO as there is generally a much wider selection of activities available to keep everyone amused.

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2012 09:25

I love going in the UK-I can take whatever I like without having to squeeze it into a suitcase which I then have to weigh.

No airport malarkey, luggage carousel stress, passport control. No being wedged in an aeroplane in very close proximity to strangers for 3 hours eating a ready meal.

MaryPoppinsBag · 07/10/2012 09:26

YANBU.
I love holidays in the UK.
Looking forward to going away to Devon at half term Smile

Shakirasma · 07/10/2012 09:26

Yanbu as you are perfectly entitled to your own opinion. You enjoy what you enjoy and that is nobody else's business.

For me personally it is my 2 weeks abroad that keep me sane. It's the only time I can properly relax, eating out, sunbathing, swimming. Bliss.

I also enjoy a week in the uk at Easter. A lovely change of scenery and lots of fab days out about on the south coast. We make lovely memories with the kids but it's a busy break, not a relaxing one.

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2012 09:28

You don't need Imodium on a UK holiday, and you can drink the water. Grin

throckenholt · 07/10/2012 09:29

We always have uk holidays (often in remote places in Scotland). It is great for small kids. The travelling is less hassle (it is much better for the environment than flying). Will probably take the kids to explore the world (probably just Europe) more when they get older probably.

Bonkerz · 07/10/2012 09:29

We have only ever holidayed in UK with DCs. The thought if a flight and sun doesn't appeal. We have two holidays a year, on caravan sites, loads of entertainment for kids and days spent sight seeing. Holidays for us are child focused and hectic!

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2012 09:30

I think my two DSs would die of boredom on a 2 week holiday abroad in the boiling hot sunshine.

sookiesookie · 07/10/2012 09:32

Yanbu to prefer them.

However the pp that said The only 'advantage' in foreign holidays is the sun is bu.

honeytea · 07/10/2012 09:34

YANBU if that's what you like.

Personally I would like to go abroard but we don't live in the UK so there is a massive pull to visit the UK when we have time off. I have decided we will never ever go to the UK in the summer as the weather is likely to be shit, we had 10 days of solid rain in June this year. Our comprimise is 10 days at christmas, a week or 2 at Easter and possibly a september long weekend in. My family live in Devon and Cornwall so at least it is a pretty place! We spend our other holidays having a week skiing in feb and a week or 2 in the countryside in Sweden (the weather is alot more reliable than the UK!)

happybubblebrain · 07/10/2012 09:34

I had three holidays abroad with dd, but the last two have been in this country and we've enjoyed these far more.

I love the ease of getting on a train and getting there in just a few hours, rather than the whole day of travelling it usually takes to get abroad. I think there is more to do here also. Our UK holidays have been in Bournemouth and Brighton, so plenty to keep us occupied in both places.

We've had boiling hot weather on our UK holidays which has helped. Plus we've had great hotels in this country.

We intend to go abroad next year, but it's already feeling like it's going to be a big effort with more stress and preparation.

Enigmosaurus · 07/10/2012 09:36

The thought of airports and flights and transfers is my worst nightmare with 4 under 7's.

Then there's the risk of me forgetting things, at least in the UK I know I'm always relatively near a supermarket where I can get familiar things if need be.

SammyTheSwedishSquirrel · 07/10/2012 09:36

However the pp that said The only 'advantage' in foreign holidays is the sun is bu.

How so?

halloweeneyqueeney · 07/10/2012 09:37

I prefer holidays in the UK too

I used to love flying, it used to be so glam and exciting! now its like a cattle mart and however relaxing a week away is its undone by the grimness of the air travel back

I can't be doing with time differences as I get older either

and if you go abroad "for sun" and it rains, its shit because everything is set up for sun! but if you go on holiday here it's not about the weather so can't be washed out!

Sparklingbrook · 07/10/2012 09:39

I couldn't do 'abroad' in July or August it would be way too hot for me. I have spoken to a few people this year that went abroad and said it was way too hot to do anything. Confused

TerrorNotSoFrightened · 07/10/2012 09:42

Me too. My family just don't understand and frequently try to badger me into coming to benidorm with them. I'd rather have my nipples removed without anaesthetic.

Vagaceratops · 07/10/2012 09:43

We were supposed to be going on a holiday abroad with DH's family which I was dreading. Now DH has been made redundant and we have had to pull out I am feeling more than a little relieved.

I love the UK. cumbria is one of my favourites. that being said the weather is unpredictable and crap!
we had 4 days in Anglesey & it rained for 3 of the days, it was miserable :(
My family are from Cyprus and I have enjoyed every holiday there, the beaches and perfect weather was very enjoyable. Not sure if it would be as fun with kids though!

perplexedpirate · 07/10/2012 09:44

YANBU. I hate flying, airports, packing, hot weather etc etc.
Luckily, we live on such in amazing place that there are so many brilliant holiday destinations to hand.
If you want somewhere at home/away, may I suggest Orkney?
( obvs don't know where you are based)
Smile

halloweeneyqueeney · 07/10/2012 09:46

and ferries! god I HATE ferries! I was pushed down the stairs by someone who could see I was visibly pregnant in the scrum for the car-park bit at the end, it doesn't matter if you pay for first class lounge (which is still shit and like having a coffee beside some road works) because you still have to join the scrums on the stairs with all the low lives who've been getting tanked up in the bar for the whole trip!
