Would you leave a sleeping baby in car in quiet residential street while you popped into friends house for 5 mins?

And didn't keep car within your sight from house?
Personally I would not do this. But have friend who did.
Just wondered what general opinion was.

I would think putting a newborn to sleep alone is much riskier than leaving a sleeping child in a car for 5 minutes!

BlueberryHill · 30/09/2012 21:28

In this case, no.

However I do leave them in the car for 30 secs / 1 min out of sight on the drive. I have 2 yo twins and to get them in the car, I leave one in the house and put the other in the car. Go back into house, get the other and put that one in the car. At this age I'm more worried about them running off and being run over / hurt. Likewise I park outside village shop and pop in, but keep the car in sight, same with petrol stations. As I've always done this, they are used to it, are with eachother and are distressed by it.

I live in a rural area so its safer than most. It is all about balancing risks.

asleep in nursery isnt comparable to asleep in car outside

BlueberryHill · 30/09/2012 21:29

Oops I missed out a *not in that sentence.

OwedToAutumn · 30/09/2012 21:29

In 2009, there were 31 million cars registered in the UK. 10,000 of these equates to 0.03%. So about 0.01% of those car fires are accidental. Of those, most are caused by poor maintenance.

The fire service page linked to above mentions 100 deaths caused by car fires per annum. There are 9 car accident related deaths every day.

Get some perspective!

BlueberryHill · 30/09/2012 21:30

Mummyonvalium, I have the same thing too.

Joiningthegang · 30/09/2012 21:30

Yes and have - more than once

I have left them and popped intO the farage to pay too

What exactly do you realistically think eill happen?

Shelby2010 · 30/09/2012 21:31

I don't think cars are secure enough to do this. I had a car stolen when parked in a 'nice' area as I'm sure many others have. And yes, baby abductors may be rare, but I can't see anyone suggesting that it's ok to leave the baby in it's buggy on it's own and trust that no one would walk off with it - although I do remember my mum doing this outside the local shop many years ago.

Just not worth the risk.

squeakytoy · 30/09/2012 21:31

If the car was in sight yes, if not, no.

bigkidsdidit · 30/09/2012 21:32

Yes

Funny how we see risk isn't it

I would never put a newborn in its own room, but did leave DS in the car for five minutes today

And both those things are massively less risky than getting in the car to drive in the first place

bessie26 · 30/09/2012 21:34

I would never do it, but more because I'm worried about them waking up & freaking out than from fear of fire/abduction. I also worry that if I lock the car, I'm also turning the alarm on, which if they moved, they would set off?

myroomisatip · 30/09/2012 21:39

I have left my kids in the car while I paid for petrol, all the while they were within my sight, but otherwise, no! It sucks really, but sometimes it is easier than getting out two tinies, getting them into the garage, paying for the petrol, getting them back into car seats.... etc etc... imagine the cars queueing!!!!! erm!

Yika · 30/09/2012 21:40

I would never do it. I keep a book in the car in case I need to sit there for ages while my DD sleeps. :)

I was absolutely horrified not long ago when I had dinner at friends. Some other friends of theirs who lived two doors along also joined us, leaving their baby alone in the house. They brought the baby monitor so they could hear if he woke up. Obviously, it was all fine and he slept the whole night but it still makes my blood run cold to think about it!

WelshMaenad · 30/09/2012 21:41

I was lambasted once for leaving my kids in the car to pay at a petrol station. By someone who put both her children forward facing in thir car seats at five months, 'because they get a better view out of the window'.

I was Confused

scarletforya · 30/09/2012 21:45

Fobwatch oh, but still they were hurt in such a random way...teenagers who held a grudge against the Mother for not giving them a lift.....it really haunts me, terrifying stuff. The poor little darlings Sad

I leave my youngest sleeping in the car outside my house. I can see and hear her from the kitchen.
