In wishing that JKRowling would shut the fuck about her new novel?

For days now the media has been awash with interviews about her new 'adult' book. Every time I turn on the radio or the tv, there she is, giving another bloody interview. She has said she thought about publishing it under a pseudonym but decided to go public. You know what JKR, anonymous would have been a good idea.

I mean, the Harry Potter books are a good yarn but hardly great literature so I am not exactly champing at the bit to get my teeth into her 'adult' offering.

And apparently it contains swearing Shock.

She has called her fictional middle class village with the adjacent sink estate Pagford. Hmm

What's class got to do with marketing the books?? Confused

QuintessentialShadows · 27/09/2012 00:01

PAGFORD You say?

I have just realized that JKR is Pagwatch.

How come I did not realize sooner.

I mean, with her gate and all.

marfisa · 27/09/2012 00:01

YANBU. I am an HP fan but I fail to see why her first adult novel should be unveiled with so much secrecy and fanfare. Are people really going to get up at the break of dawn to buy a book that has nothing to do with HP? I will read it but almost certainly not until it comes out in paperback. I was more excited about the new Zadie Smith and the (not so new any more) Hilary Mantel.

marfisa · 27/09/2012 00:02

LOL at Quintessential! Grin

alphabite · 27/09/2012 02:05

Maybe you watch too much tv op. Ive only seen her give one interview. I don't particularly like her manner but she has every right to publicise a new book. Loved the HP books. I just think she rubs people up the wrong way as she isn't naturally warm and funny. She's a bit political. However that's just her personality and doesn't alter the fact she has done incredibly well. HP encouraged many children to want to read and for that reason I applaud her.

rowingdowntheriver · 27/09/2012 02:39

I hadn't really noticed the JK Rowling interviews but then have not read a paper for a while. Think I'll wait to hear the reviews before deciding whether to read the book.

pickles, I think merrylegs is the Shetland pony in black beauty.

Itsgottabebags · 27/09/2012 08:08

I like JK Rowling and I personally don't think she will personally have had much to do with all the. Palava about when the boxes can be opened and what not.

She has a right to publicise her book and at least she is famous for her achievements and not simply because she is famous unlike some 'selebs'.

hackmum · 27/09/2012 08:14

YABVVVU. All authors promote their books. In between books, JK is pretty quiet. She's giving a lot of interviews now because people want to interview her. Why do they want to interview her? Because she's the biggest-selling writer in history and loads of people want to read her new book.

ALSO she a) gives loads of money to really worthy causes, and not just fashionable ones b) speaks out against the Tories c) has brought pleasure to millions of children through the Harry Potter books.

I don't know how much more you could ask for, frankly.

TheOneWithTheHair · 27/09/2012 08:21

Yabu.

I wish her luck with it. I wouldn't have rushed to buy it but dh ordered me one so I'll see what it's like later.

butisthismyname · 27/09/2012 08:24

Merrylegs is Clarissa's pony in Malory Towers isn't she?

twoGoldfingerstoGideon · 27/09/2012 08:43

I think JK is the dog's bollocks.

As hackmum says, she brings joy to million and gives away shedloads of money.

As for the assertion that she is 'sneering about the middle classes': the fact that she's written something that highlights the way people look down on and judge people beneath them is great, IMO. Millions of people will read this book. If it causes just one of them to re-think their entrenched attitudes to those less fortunate she will have achieved something amazing.

Mrsjay · 27/09/2012 08:54

I didn't know she had a new book out well I do now , I suppose she is on the press tour to promote her new book much better than a 24 yr old tulisa promoting her autobiography Shock

Fecklessdizzy · 27/09/2012 09:03

She's a well-known writer who's got a new book out and people want to interview her ... It's not exactly unusual. If it's boring yer bits orf change the channel.

I like JK, she writes a ripping yarn and her heart's in the right place, anyone who gave the world Blast-ended Screwts has to be a force for good! Grin

YouOldSlag · 27/09/2012 09:04

Authors promotes own book! Hold the front page!

You may find a lot of this is because it's in her contract and is aprt of a legal obligation.

Who said she shouldn't write because she has enough money? Rubbish. So Richard Branson should retire too? or maybe they are passionate about what they do and wish to continue instead of being part of the idle rich.

I admire JKR and as Itsgottbebags said above, at least she earned her place and isn't just famous for being famous. Plus her books got kids reading and that's always going to be an amazing and good achievement.

wildpoppy · 27/09/2012 09:06

Yabu. She's nice.

FreddieMercurysBolero · 27/09/2012 09:13

I want to read it. I wasn't that arsed until I read the interview in the Guardian on Saturday. I can't afford a hardback but hopefully I'l get it for Christmas. I do admire her and feel she's brave for writing another book; she didn't need to but she did it anyway and I do hope it does well for her.

TiggyD · 27/09/2012 09:14

YABU

She wrote a book and now she's trying to sell it.

OlaRapaceFru · 27/09/2012 09:16

I imagine shedloads of PR money has been thrown at publicising her new book and, presumably, all sectors of the media want an interview.

Love the connection Quint, although the bit about her 'gate' has gone completely over my head Confused

LauraShigihara · 27/09/2012 09:17

I love the name Merrylegs - reminds me of the Thelwell cartoons.

I also heart JKR - anybody who could give Harry Potter to the world is alright by me.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 27/09/2012 09:20

Yabu.

She did one big detailed interview and the media are the ones playing different bits of it over and over, that's not her fault.

Her publishing company will have decided on the details of the release, again, not her fault. But if you think there won't be interest in her first adult novel then you are being ridiculous. Of course there will be interest, she's probably one of the most successful living authors there is.

maybenow · 27/09/2012 09:23

I saw her interviewed on tv and she was good. She talked about how she has enough money so her only reason to write is for her and for the art of writing - i think that's great, it shows she loves writing and wasn't just doing it to make money.

She also talked about her contribution to the levison enquiry which was very good.

I will probably read her book, but not in hardback, i will wait for paperback or kindle versions. She has had an interesting life and certainly wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth so i can imagine she has plenty to write about in relation to 'real life'.

Mrsjay · 27/09/2012 09:24

anybody who could give Harry Potter to the world is alright by me.

and me she is fantastic got children reading made me my teenagers cry when the final film came out her books were childrens childhoods.

Bombus · 27/09/2012 09:29

I don't blame her for wanting to publicise her novel, but I am a bit sick of seeing her everywhere at the moment. Especially as she has a real chip on her shoulder about the village she grew up in, which is where I now live and is a definitely not as snobby (at least now) as she makes out.

QuintessentialShadows · 27/09/2012 09:30

FruOla, Have you seen a picture of Pags house? It has a fab Harry Potteresque gate.

SqueezeMeBakingPowder · 27/09/2012 09:31

YABU,
She is awesome, and I will definitely be reading the new book. She was great on the Culture Show last night IMO!
