Not to want to see a woman's bum in my local paper?

Flicking through the "what's on" section of my local free paper, place where they usually advertise pantomimes, car boots etc and there is a delightful half page advert for a dubious sounding strip club and bar with the headine "5 new girls this weekend, come and see the big girls play" accompanied by a large photo of a bum (admittedly with a slither of g string on it) and dollar notes shoved in it.

Am I BU to expect to a read a local paper without such a blatantly sexist, derogatory picture? Should I complain as its really incensed me. I have 2 very very young daughters but I don't want them to see adverts like that as the norm. Should I write to the letters page (and accept it probably won't get printed) or email the editorial team direct?

Do your young daughters often read through the what's on section looking for the next car boot sale?

It's a bum. Get over it.

blueraincoat · 26/09/2012 15:11

I am with you fantalemon Not an appropriate place to advertise this sort of thing. Especially with a very large advert. I don't think YWBU to write in.

pointybird · 26/09/2012 15:16

YANBU - free papers posted through your door should not include the imagery you describe. If you had paid for the paper and brought it home, that would be different.

megandraper · 26/09/2012 15:17

YANBU.

myroomisatip · 26/09/2012 15:19

Another 'YANBU' here!

RubyFakeNails · 26/09/2012 15:22

I always see those things in papers, so it is the norm.

Also its just a bum.

You can see women advertising M&S in their underwear throughout most magazines and along most highstreets.

Think you're being precious.

Also I imagine a paper like that takes what advertisement it can get, and its been printed now so unless there are 5 new girls next week, which could happen its not going to change anything.

blueraincoat · 26/09/2012 15:24

I think women advertising underwear for M&S is very a bit different to a women's bum with money tucked into the g-string.

GoldShip · 26/09/2012 15:25

-sigh-

It's a bum.

WorraLiberty · 26/09/2012 15:26

They're not going to do anything about your complaint because it's the advertising that pays for the free paper in the first place.

MrSunshine · 26/09/2012 15:27

Yes its a bum, but a bum is not just a bum. In a gstring with money sticking out, its not just a bum, is it?

Of course yanbu.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 26/09/2012 15:28

turn the page then!

fantalemon · 26/09/2012 15:30

I can cope with a photo of a bum and would have no issue at all with a photo of a bum advertising, say, greater awareness of bowel cancer but it's the blatant message it is sending out (aided by the notes stuffed in her pants) that women are commodities. Yes I know sex sells but do I need to be reminded in a local paper which I usually read to check out what family friendly events are on around town.

MrSunshine · 26/09/2012 15:32

turn the page? Thats the answer to degrading imagery of women? Don't like page 3, turn the page, don't like naked women, turn the page....don't you have a bit more social responsibility than that?

achillea · 26/09/2012 15:33

YANBU not sure who you would complain to though. If you find out, let me know, it's been an issue with me too.

pointybird · 26/09/2012 15:35

Email the advertising dept and explain why you thought the pic wasn't appropriate. CC the circulation manager and say you don't want the paper delivered anymore. It's not just a bum, its the connotations that go with it. The strip club wouldn't be allowed to post a leaflet through your door, so how can they advertise within a freebie?

KillerRack · 26/09/2012 15:35

I've never understood the deal with bums,

'I decided to put a piece of lace that could be used for flossing, right up inbetween where I shit from and put money there too, come and get it ;)'

Ick, ick keep your shitholes from public view thankyaaa.

But I think 'incensed' is too far though, just bloody gross.

achillea · 29/09/2012 17:13

Our local paper has just gone to digital only - they are no longer going to print it and post it through the door. Great, no more bums at the breakfast table!

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 29/09/2012 17:15

Yanbu

It's not just a bum. It's a bum advertising sex. Don't be deliberately obtuse.

Maybe we should have shitty bums advertising toilet paper

SassySpice · 29/09/2012 18:27

YANBU
When it has sexual connotations it's not 'just a bum'

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 29/09/2012 18:59

YANBU
Good luck with your complaint.

squeakytoy · 29/09/2012 19:05

could we use the words buttocks please, I am offended by the constant use of the word "bum".. especially as the correct words are always so important on here normally...

Wink
redbunnyfruitcake · 29/09/2012 19:57

I'm not offended by a photo of a bum per se or my daughter seeing said bottom but I object to what is essentially advertising for prostitution in any paper, free or otherwise. I don't think this is about being prudish, rather it's about the sexualization and exploitation of women as being so acceptable and normal that a free paper sees nothing wrong with advertising it.

Lilithmoon · 29/09/2012 20:01

YANBU. It is patently more than 'just a bum'. Incredibly depressing that is normal to objectify women in this way.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 29/09/2012 20:27

I saw a woman assistants big fat bum in Build a Bear today.

QuangleWangleQuee · 29/09/2012 20:42

accompanied by a large photo of a bum (admittedly with a slither of g string on it) and dollar notes shoved in it.

Just to be clear, were the dollar notes shoved into the bum or the g string?
