I was struck off as a blood donor today as I have become allergic to the skin cleansing solution, after giving blood for 23 years. So I felt I should try to recruit a replacement.

Anyone willing to give blood instead of me? (subject of course to health reasons/previous transfusions/dodgy lifestyles etc)

Thanks!

xelliex is right, you can still donate if you take medication, it says on the website that the blood can be used for other things, not just transfusions.

I've given blood since I was at school and am always amazed (and saddened) by how few other people I know donate. Even this thread is full of reasons why people can't do it - I hope some posters come on soon to say they already give.

I'd love schools to encourage more donors and educate young people about how easy and absolutely essential it is.

everythingpasses · 25/09/2012 20:53

OP I will do it too - so you have doubled what you gave! I keep meaning to and this has given me a push x

VerityClinch · 25/09/2012 20:57

Can someone tell me the rules about having had a blood transfusion?

I had 2 litres transfused (some, but not all, of it my own) giving birth to DD (grade 4 placenta praevia, haemmorage, blood EVERYWHERE).

I'm O negative too, which is the "best" type as anyone can have it (but O negs can only have O neg), it seems such a shame if I can't donate anymore (which is my understanding) ESP as I've donated my blood to my own dad before. Sad

RuleBritannia · 25/09/2012 20:57

When my DCs were toddlers, I took them with me and they were 'interested' in what was being done. They are now donors.

No, they didn't wander round and interfere with other donors or staff. They stayed at my bedside or on it just looking at my glass bottle -plastic bag filling up.--

karatekimmi · 25/09/2012 21:01

I will try. I have never been able to due to holidays, piercings and tattoos too recently when I turned up. I've just had DS so will try to give blood this week.

karatekimmi · 25/09/2012 21:02

Can you do it while breast feeding

Goldensunnydays81 · 25/09/2012 21:04

Does anyone know if you can donate if you have diabetes? I really want to donate especially as a friends little boy has just needed lots recently!!

Schrodingershamster · 25/09/2012 21:05

I cant either. Actually even if i was allowed to medically i dont think they would due to the nature of the things i work with.

marquesas · 25/09/2012 21:07

karatekimmi - the rule used to be that you had to wait 9 months after giving birth so I'd check before you go. I don't think bfing itself would be an issue after that time

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 25/09/2012 21:07

Badgers I was going to say that i would take her place since i have been thinking about it. I was refused twice years ago and thought they would have me back now but I am a Brit in Canada so they won't, you say. How annoying. I can't believe I am a perfectly healthy person who has been tested for everything and have tried but they keep turning me down.

LadyMacbethIsBored · 25/09/2012 21:07

I was struck off for the same thing OP. Not as impressive as you but I have done 21 donations. I'm gutted that I can't do it any more. I am O negative so they are always advertising that they need my blood, really annoys me that they can't find something else to clean my arm with.

DameKewcumber · 25/09/2012 21:10

Someone needs to donate for me too. I used to regularly donate but now have autoimmune pernicious anaemia which bars me.

SchrodingersMew · 25/09/2012 21:13

I'm not sure if I can. Confused I take medicine though that isn't safe while breast feeding so I doubt it would be safe to give blood with?

AgentProvocateur · 25/09/2012 21:28

I do it regularly. I'm O neg too, and have twice been called to donate urgently - once for a very prem baby in a planned delivery. It's the only heroic thing I've ever done Smile

PurplePidjin · 25/09/2012 22:33

Afaik it's 6 months post partum, which means I'll be back next Summer. Dp is also a donor, we're on the bone marrow and organ registers and i looked into cord blood donation but can't because I'm not in London.

It saddens me how surprised my mw was when i could state my blood group (and normal bp) at booking in. She was properly Shock when i told her dp's group as well :o More people should know this stuff, it seems the default reaction to routine bloods being taken is the Shrinking Violet variety (genuine phobias excepted)

"I don't like needles" isn't a viable option in the back of the ambulance...

CrunchyCowPat · 26/09/2012 07:13

DH and I are regular donors. DS always comes along and watches (again, doesn't bother anyone else, just sits quietly by the bed). I hope that by letting him come he'll view it as a normal thing to do as an adult.
I work with people with blood cancer and other blood disorders so see first hand how vital blood products are.
So come on - if you can, give blood! you get free tea and biscuits you know

Ecgwynn · 26/09/2012 07:35

Thanks for reminding me. I will be able to donate again next month, will book an appointment for me and DH.

CheerMum · 26/09/2012 07:51

Sirzy, they don't want mine either. Sad

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 26/09/2012 07:52

I reregistered last week, as did DH - I used to donate regularly but haven't for a long time because of pregnancies and various medical bits. I'm looking forward to wandering around with a big bandage, being all dramatic (allergic to the adhesive on plasters and micropore)

CheerMum · 26/09/2012 07:52

:)

Woofsaidtheladybird · 26/09/2012 07:56

I can't either unfortunately as I had a blood transfusion in 1980. However, because of Expat's sad thread recently, I joined the Anthony Nolan register, who are fine about the past blood transfusion. So hopefully I can do something one day Smile

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere · 26/09/2012 07:59

I did this last yer because I was devastated that I was too anaemic to give blood.
People were fab :)

I am due back in December and scarfing down spatone in preparation.

DevaDiva · 26/09/2012 08:00

They don't want mine anymore Sad had a blood transfusion in 2001 (DD1 placenta problems and blood leakage a plenty), eternally grateful to the donors but a bit Hmm as to what they might have given me! DH donates religiously think he's nearly up to 50 pints Grin

anewyear · 26/09/2012 08:57

Ive have Strep B so I cant either Sad

boschy · 26/09/2012 09:14

They wont have me either, because I have had melanoma twice. I do carry an organ donation card though, because apparently this is ok - I'm not quite sure why? can anyone enlighten me?
