Paris - that's where it's at - grew up in the country and it's very nice - for holidays! Also my husband comes from small village in alps - everybody tells us how fantastic it is - it's so boring - I noticed all the local kids hang out at the local bus stop! There's no way my kids would want to live there.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 23/09/2012 19:36

ellanjames, you've never been to Stroud, have you? Grin

nkf · 23/09/2012 19:38

Nearly there, Hullygully. Nearly there. I am sending you some big city vibes to remind you that it's all still out there, waiting for you to return.

hattymattie · 23/09/2012 19:38

Hully you never did say where you were stranded

NellyJob · 23/09/2012 19:39

yes hattie the bus stop!! aarrghhhh! my son has not left the house since July (unless I drive him straight out)

ariadneoliver · 23/09/2012 19:39

I've watched the Wicker Man , seems to me that there's plenty to do in the countryside for those who like to join in group activities. Grin

Hated the country. Ran away as soon as I was able to escape. Horrid place to grow up with feck all to do. Returned recently after 20 years away, was lied to and told how the place had improved, more to do. Was all lies. Still no decent shops, cinema, pool, even the park had got worse lol. Was supposed to be there for 2 weeks, made some lame excuse and left after 2 days.

Blistory · 23/09/2012 19:41

You need to suck it up and embrace it. Get chickens, talk to the cows, revel in the fresh air, bake, knit. If you give yourself over to it, it's not that bad.

But you do know your children won't thank you for it in the long run.....

For the people who do like ti What do you do all day on a wet weekend?

Work. Most of my adult students are too busy to learn during the week, so Sat and Sun it is.

My worst bit of the week is Monday. Kid is occupied upstairs at school and won't let me lurk. I have no students. DH has usually buggered off with the car. And everything is shut until 4pm. Mondays are very very long.

Especially Mondays when the fog comes. Jesus it is so thick sometimes it feels like the stuff you get in horror films that has massive creepy crawlies hiding in it.

Those days I get all nostalic even for the scattered used syringes of Milan.

NellyJob · 23/09/2012 19:45

suocera I might have been to your area.....that fog you mention ....
are you about 50 km north of Milan? near the airport?

moonieponds · 23/09/2012 19:45

Envy at out in 3.5.

I'm here forever. Hell, yeah.

I've taken to brewing moonshine using those red spotted mushrooms instead of potatoes.

ellenjames · 23/09/2012 19:47

haha no never been or heard or stroud!

motherinferior · 23/09/2012 19:47

I am in sarfeast Lunnon, Hully. One of those areas which induces mild pearl-clutching among the more refained frequenters of MN. It has its drawbacks, but I am quite madly urban, really. And I like the fact that our weirdo multiculti household is Absolutely Normal and there are lesbian mothers at the school gates and DD2's new classmate has arrived from Afghanistan speaking no English. This is the stuff of life.

cardibach · 23/09/2012 19:51

I love it. Can;t be doing with people in my way all the time. I used to live very near a city in a lovely small town, and I can honestly say I go to the cinema and theatre more now than I did then - I know I have to plan it, so I do! THere is a certain amount of child ferrying involved, but there is also a lot of child playing out in garden/in woods/on beach. DD is now 16 and loves it too - her dad still lives in a town near a city so she can compare.

IamtheZombie · 23/09/2012 19:51

Zombie grew up in the country. She moved to the nearby small city at 18. At 30 she crossed the Atlantic and lived in London for 10 years. She has been in a tiny village for the last 20 years and can't bear to think about ever having to move anywhere else.

SpottedGurnard · 23/09/2012 19:52

I've recently moved to Devon, I'm not even in the country im in a town but I'm soooo bored! There's not even a NANDOS nearby! All the restaurants and bars are aimed at holiday makers and there is fuck all to do.

I cannot wait to leave and get back to normal life-lived near Birmingham before and before that London.

QuickLookBusy · 23/09/2012 19:52

We're in the country for the children's education. It is shit, utter boring shit. And I mean that literally as the farmer keeps spreading shit on his fields at the moment.
In our village, if you want any entertainment you have to join the cycling club. They all go off for a ride and a bit of partner swapping. How can all that tight Lycra be any kind of turn on?

Dd2 has just finished sixth form and we are freeeeee. Yesterday we went house hunting, in a town!!!! I'm quite giddy with the excitement of it all.

nkf · 23/09/2012 19:54

What is so wonderful about all these country schools?

motherinferior · 23/09/2012 19:54

I like people. I even quite like the winos who live (rather harmlessly) in the hostel at the end of our street.

NellyJob · 23/09/2012 19:55

fuck all nkf

MoreBeta · 23/09/2012 19:55

You want grass, trees, flowers, fresh air, ducks?

Well you could go and live in the countryside OR just walk to your local park and go to the cinema on your way home.

nkf · 23/09/2012 19:57

I actually like the countryside - for weekends. But that lovely moment when the train pulls through the back streets and stops in Paddington. Can't beat it.
