That is all, really.

Public schools are a small group of independent schools which are members of the Headmaster's/mistresses Conference. They arenthe posh ones that most people have heard of- Eton, Harrow, Winchester- that lot. I know of a couple of parents whose kids are one of those- but not many. I think about 15% of private schools qualify? These schools vary hugely, but it's safe to say that they all have the academic and sporting rigour that people expect from the sector.

Independent and private schools are all the rest of the fee paying sector, covering everything from a tiny 20 child school in an old Rectory to some very well known ones. I think the terms are interchangeable. I get the feeling that independent the slightly higher status term. Sometimes shortened to Indie.

These are the schools that it is impossible to generalise about- they range from ghastly in every way to fantastic in every way, and they have an enormous range of philosophies and ethos.

I will prepare another essay on charitable status if the demand is there!

TheGoldenKnid
Will there be an entry exam to allow access to this topic?

A private education thread clashes with the socialist ideology I failed to cast off at 17, so I'm just going to buy a big house near to the best state school education thread and pretend that makes me somehow different.

Pagwatch · 25/09/2012 09:02

Boogers

Tbh I think you are exaggerating somewhat.
Many many threads turn into state vs private but often that is to do with firstly how the thread is titled, where it is posted and how contributors responded to attempts at shite stirring.

I think if you post 'does anyone know if lady Eleanor Holles has a good sporting reputation' in education, you get appropriate replies.
If you post 'should I sell DD to get DS1 a place at Eton because he is quite the brightest boy in the world and I worry about lice at our local state school' you will get your arse kicked.

The other thing i think would help generally is if people tried to
A) respond politely but robustly to arse 'you may think private schools are the devil but that is not the point of this thread and thesis not aibu, you sanctimonious twat'
B) resist the thick as pig shit urge to respond to an attack on private schools by attacking state schools.
C) report persistent offenders for goading.

Loads of sections have this problem. But trying together a section on private schools is a horrible idea imho

Hullygully · 25/09/2012 09:07

The public schools are the ones that were set up originally to provide an education for the bright poor

hence public

seeker · 25/09/2012 09:50

So were grammar schools.

avivabeaver · 25/09/2012 10:37

but it would only have 4 threads in it, just going on for ever

  1. Have you moved your child from state to private
  2. Have you moved your child from private to state
  3. How do you get a bursary?
  4. Is it shameful to use the second hand shop

and another which will roughly say

  1. we are not rich/posh and have wear sacks to send our dc to private school because it is worth the sacrifice
avivabeaver · 25/09/2012 10:39

and, by the way, i have done private and state for my kids so not bothered either way!

threeorangesocksmorganisagirl · 25/09/2012 10:41

where would I post then?
dd goes to an independent school paid for by the LEA
can we have a topic just for people like me please

ExitPursuedByABear · 25/09/2012 10:43

I was that girl three.

Can I join your topic.

wordfactory · 25/09/2012 12:01

pag is on the money.

We don't need a separate topic, we just need posters to show a few manners and common sense.

Someone posting for advice/information does not need to be greeted by someone with an agenda. Thos eposters just have poor manners IMVHO.

wordfactory · 25/09/2012 12:08

And yes, I did think it would be worth having a permenant private v state thread running. Like a 24 hour news feed.

MrDobalina · 25/09/2012 12:13

its the same with every topic on MN....someone always takes the piss

can you not see the irony in asking for a seperate Private Education topic? Hmm

MrDobalina · 25/09/2012 12:15

what specific questions would you want to discuss?

I cant think of anything that is specific to private education but not state education

if you have an issue with school, why would you even say you were talking baout a private school?

i can see a seperate thread for Home Schooling...but not Private Schooling

Confused
Viviennemary · 25/09/2012 12:21

Well I think a dowmarket cheaper end private school is a lot worse than a stateschool.

seeker · 25/09/2012 12:40

It depends on the private school and on the state school!

jeee · 25/09/2012 12:44

But I love the threads weighing up the relative merits of Harrow over Winchester.

It's so far removed from my life experiences.

I suppose it also demonstrates that, even with a hefty budget, deciding on your child's school is never easy.

2rebecca · 25/09/2012 17:17

My son's is one of the cheaper private schools. Not convinced more expensive private schools are better. Often they just have more extensive grounds, extra stuff like boarding facilities and a famous name. My son's has a good academic record, is fairly strict and small classes and good with special needs pupils.
I went to a state school and got better exam results than my husband who went to a private school. The schools within each sector vary so much I think private v state discussions are meaningless. It has to be this private school v this state school.

EdgarAllanPond · 25/09/2012 18:25

"Yes it is acceptable and it brings out the 'Jocasta ' jokes and the too thick for state school comments and then there must be some sort of secret klaxon because the same set of posters are there doing it within minutes."
