To think that DH won't notice...?

If I don't play the childrens song CD he bought for DS, for use in my car, he's hardly ever in my car with us and what is wrong with my choice in music?

Is he trying to drive me mad? Does he secretly hate me? Do I really need to listen to the wheels on the bus or any other insanely annoying songs while DS either sleeps or chatters?

Don't want DS to grow up thinking that he controls the music in my car.

weird and wired even!

chinam · 21/09/2012 20:58

How very dare you, Agent. I love the teeny tiny purple prince and won't hear a word against him.

WaitingForMe · 21/09/2012 20:59

Tattoo by Van Halen is the DSSs favourite song at the moment.

We don't do nursery rhymes in our house but singing is encouraged. DSS2 (aged 4) does vocals to DH on the guitar to Mr Big's 'To be with you.'

:o

WithoutCaution · 21/09/2012 21:00

Surely DH also needs to know the words/sing to DS?

Yep the CD has to go in his car since he knows the words to less childrens songs than me. Definitely doing him a favour Grin

I made the mistake of buying nursery rhymes for my first child in the car. Never again. The other 2 have really enjoyed chart music and happily sing along to that.

cece · 21/09/2012 21:02

Can I suggest you put it into his car for use when he is driving your DC? Grin

WithoutCaution · 21/09/2012 21:03

Holds hands up and admits that I already had most of the disney songs on itunes before I met DH and I know most of the words Blush

TheOneWithTheHair · 21/09/2012 21:05

Yes put it in his car.

Ds1 at four loved Andy Williams and Bon Jovi.
Ds2 is three and loves Take That and Feeder.
Dd loves Classic FM

I wish I could have put some cooler bands up there

Point is any music is good for them. Not just nursery rhymes.

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 21/09/2012 21:06

The Importance of Nursery Rhymes. Apparently I am right. Children who learn nursery rhymes gain 4 advantages:

  1. learn the intonation patterns of a language:
  2. learn new words and concepts;
  3. understand the basis of learning to read and write; and
  4. appreciate poetry.
WithoutCaution · 21/09/2012 21:10

Currently have a random mix of Jace Everett, Biffy Clyro, Birthday Massacre, Billy Talent, Green day, Gotye ect on in the car.

We listen to the same music we always did in the car. The only thing I ever jump over is the "Get in the Ring" bit by Guns n Roses - I hate it, and it is a bit ful lon and ranty fo children. They know all the words to almost everything else GnR sing, also Green Day, the Levellers, and all points between. They also know which words are swear words, and that it being ok to sing along with the music in the car doesn't make it ok to actually use those words anywhere else.
We listen to stuff from Michelle Shocked to the BeeGees to Neil Diamond via Serj Tankian and The Men They Couldn't Hang Grin

That said, many years ago, no2 son once sang Masochism Tango at nursery for Show n Tell type thing they did, and when the teacher asked if he knew any other songs sort of desperately he gave them the first verse and chorus of Come Out Ye Black n Tans Confused

harbingerofdoom · 21/09/2012 21:20

On a serious note, I think they should know traditional nursery songs rather then Disney. If you're English, otherwise it dies.

Mine knew all the traditional rhymes but......................what they love best was the Cartoons Witch Doctor OOOOOOOOOO EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ooooooo aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaa

WithoutCaution · 21/09/2012 21:23

harbinger - I love the with doctor too Smile DS will know traditional nursery rhymes but I really don't want them on in the car... At least not more than once a week

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 21/09/2012 21:29

Useful to know traditional rhymes (and fairy tales) as much ot our culture and education assumes children know them.

AgentZigzag · 21/09/2012 21:29

I'm telling you for your own good chinam.

The people you know in RL are just being polite not saying anything Wink

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 21/09/2012 21:29

Yes, there's a massive difference between teaching your dc nursery rhymes and being subjected to somebody (usually accompanied by their Casio keyboard) else's interpretation of them in the car on every outing you go on.

slightlysuperior, has anybody here said that they haven't sung nursery rhymes with their dc? I think the consensus is that they aren't the tunes of choice in most MN'ers cars!

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 21/09/2012 21:29

of!

harbingerofdoom · 21/09/2012 21:29

Don't have them in the car. Put your music on. Within limits. Bit of the Proms. Bit of folk etc. I would actually say keep it very eclectic.

DD2 is now listening to Fleetwood Mac!

SlightlySuperiorPeasant · 21/09/2012 21:33

Bored sarcasm (or something) fail.

I really should go to bed. I'm currently watching a program about Liverpool FC, interspersed with laddish ad breaks. Mat leave is sinking me to new depths.

cynner · 21/09/2012 21:38

YANBU...I have tried singing to my children, only to hear from the backseat " Mummy! MUUUUUUUUmmmy! Pleeeaase don't sing! Doooooooooont Siiiing!"
My children grew up on the Doors, Van Morrison, and Hits of the 80's....
My littlest miss has an unfortunate predilection for One Direction..

StateofConfusion · 21/09/2012 22:42

He must hate you.

Ds and dd are ac/dc, train, papa roach, def leppard and metalica fans, but then they also like the wanted and nikki minaj, so I can't completely claim to have educated them music wise. But imo proper music, different genres etc are a good thing for them to experience, ds has quite in depth discussions about why he likes a song etc.

Popsandpip · 21/09/2012 22:54

I was brought up on The Rolling Stones, Abba, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Rod Stewart being endlessly played in my parents' cars. Never did me any harm!

AgentZigzag · 21/09/2012 23:01

Look, I know the words to Cliff Richards greatest hits and I turned out OK

weegiemum · 21/09/2012 23:11

My dd1 never learned nursery rhymes despite lots of playing.

Had Bohemian Rhapsody off pat at age 3 though and I still cringe for my friend who took her out one day when I was home with younger ds and dd2 who accidentally played her "Too Drunk To Fuck" (Dead Kennedys) and she got the words for that after a 30 second excerpt, she was 4. Still remembers it too.

I highly recommend the cd of he soundtrack from "Cars" and there's a good "Bear In The Big Blue House" one too. Or alternatively mine don't mind listening to what they still refer to as "daddy's jesus music" (U2)!
