To be scared of getting a job in case I'm worse off?

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 11:50

NC and prepared for a flaming.

I've been claiming JSA for over two years now and am on the Work Programme. I have no qualifications and all I could get (I think) is a minimum wage job. I have been lying about my attempts to get work because I think I am better off out of work.

At the moment I get full housing benefit plus council tax, free dental care/prescriptions (if I need them) and £71 a week to live on. My bills aren't covered obviously, but they're not huge, and I have lots of free time to indulge hobbies etc.. I don't feel the need to buy stuff very often as I'm not into fashion/beauty and I eat cheaply. I can afford to eat out once a week with a TasteCard. The only thing I miss is holidays abroad but I'm not sure I would be able to afford them if I got a job anyway.

If I got a full time minimum wage job, would I be worse off? Just thinking of travel expenses, student loan repayment and time lost - not sure if I would still get any council tax benefit?

Has anyone had experience of this? By the way, I'm childless and live alone.

Off you pop now, goodbye.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/09/2012 12:28

I DON'T BELIEVE YOU.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 21/09/2012 12:28

Oh, and I went as a mature student too - still had to have A'levels

Floggingmolly · 21/09/2012 12:28

This is a wind up.
Why should I work, unless the company I work for is bettering the world?
Hmm

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 21/09/2012 12:29

Haha, @ Liz Jones Grin

RaisinDEtre · 21/09/2012 12:29

well do you know what, I don't know if you will be better off financially but answer a few questions for me, yes?

you live alone, do you see this continuing forever, do you see yourself with a partner in the future?

Zalen · 21/09/2012 12:29

If you want to benefit society then get off your lazy $%& and go out and find a job so you contribute to society instead of living off of it like a f&%$£$g parasite

wigglesrock · 21/09/2012 12:31

You won't be stuck on the same wage forever, you get a job - a minimum wage one (I've had loads), you have an aptitude for it, or for dealing with people - you get promoted or apply for a better paid job and on and on. Thats how it pays to work. I have been in your position albeit 20 years ago, I was worse off for the first year. Then I wasn't, I had sick pay, paid holidays, fun, paid holidays, friends, paid holiday Grin and then when I did have a family I had maternity pay and a job to go back to.

Pourquoimoi · 21/09/2012 12:31

You should work, even if it is not 'bettering the world' because then the taxpayers money can go to someone who actually needs it, not to someone who can't be bothered to work.
You can afford to have principles about bettering the world when we're not paying for you to fart around.
I too hope you're a troll as your attitude really pisses me and many other people off.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:31

I do actually have one A level, but apparently I didn't need it for the degree I attempted.

I was given no such information when I signed on. I have asked various people but they always refer me to someone else, who refers me to someone else...

This happens when I try to call for info to. End up on the phone for hours.

I do have a partner.

It is possible that in getting a min wage job I could progress, but in the meantime wouldn't I lose my flat?

Most people work op not just for money to live but for their own self respect and to give back to the economy rather than to take!

Benefits are there for people that are unable to find work or unable to work for other reasons, not for people who think they shouldn't have to work!

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 12:35

blah blah blah

OP, ever fancied free-lance writing?

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:35

Thanks wiggles. That was the kind of advice I was hoping for!

I do want to work but worried about losing my home x

How do you get into that, UnChartered?

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 12:39

you write pieces for magazines and get paid for them can't believe i'm answering this

toddlerama · 21/09/2012 12:39

If you really feel it doesn't benefit the world at large for you to have paid employment (including Wetherspoons you arrogant tool) you must have a worse grasp of economics than my toddler. If you keep taking out without putting in there wont be anything left. And there are those who need the money in that pot to survive. Do it for the people whose DLA is being axed because of takers like yourself.

MrSunshine · 21/09/2012 12:39

Bullshit. You've already said you don't want to be employed by a company, so you don't want to work.

You're the kind of person that give genuine claimants a bad image. Too lazy to work, too lazy to finish a qualification, have a grand little life for yourself on other peoples money and think you're above it all.

If you're for real, and I hope you aren't, you should be ashamed of yourself. Benefits should be a safety net, not a lifestyle choice.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 21/09/2012 12:40

If have an A'level then you do have qualifications.

And the information about income isn't something you have to ask for, it's part of the system.

But, if you are genuine then no, if you take a minimum wage job you won't lose your flat. You would still be able to claim housing benefit and possibly tax credits.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:41

Will I lose my flat if I get full time min wage work???

OP posts:
susitwoshoes · 21/09/2012 12:41

because you are a member of the human race, and as such, a member of society, an adult with adult responsibilities. Though you don't sound like any of those things. And there are plenty of jobs out there that would benefit society - though I doubt you'd be up for them as you clearly don't see why you or your existence should be a benefit to society. And you sound like an utter dimwit if you need this explaining to you.

Why did you not complete your degree, out of interest?

LonelyCloud · 21/09/2012 12:42

YABU.

Yes, if you start on a minimum wage job, it's possible that you may be worse off initially - but if you work hard and get experience, you may then be able to apply for a job that pays more, or get promoted and then get paid more.

And it sounds like you're using 'bettering the world' as an excuse not to work. As someone else pointed out, there's minimum wage jobs out there, such as health care assistants, that do benefit other people. Do you even do any unpaid volunteer work that might 'better the world'?

KateSpade · 21/09/2012 12:42

This is a wind up isn't it?

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 12:44

Sorry, x post.

Did the turntous calculation and I would be marginally better off with a full time min wage job.

But not if I had to travel/pay off loan.

And I wouldn't have time to do what I love.
