To be scared of getting a job in case I'm worse off?

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 11:50

NC and prepared for a flaming.

I've been claiming JSA for over two years now and am on the Work Programme. I have no qualifications and all I could get (I think) is a minimum wage job. I have been lying about my attempts to get work because I think I am better off out of work.

At the moment I get full housing benefit plus council tax, free dental care/prescriptions (if I need them) and £71 a week to live on. My bills aren't covered obviously, but they're not huge, and I have lots of free time to indulge hobbies etc.. I don't feel the need to buy stuff very often as I'm not into fashion/beauty and I eat cheaply. I can afford to eat out once a week with a TasteCard. The only thing I miss is holidays abroad but I'm not sure I would be able to afford them if I got a job anyway.

If I got a full time minimum wage job, would I be worse off? Just thinking of travel expenses, student loan repayment and time lost - not sure if I would still get any council tax benefit?

Has anyone had experience of this? By the way, I'm childless and live alone.

Exactly SirGOLD- op gives new js like me & my dh a bad name!!
When we walked in the js office, the gentlemen at the front looked down on us like all the rest simply because there are so many people working the systemAngry

Fishwife1949 · 21/09/2012 21:32

littlemisssarcastic then millions of people are crazy we would be better off as a family on the dole

We would get the following

Free school dinners worth £40 a month
School uniform voucher worth £150
I would get 50% off the price of a weekly bus pass
50% lesuire pass which can ne used at local gym, pool and library
We would get council tax paid
Rent paid
Milk tokens
Meditation free

I would also get the hoilday club my child attends for half price

But alot of people just have more pride

Many people would be better off if they downed tools but their are other benefits to working other than money

NellyJob · 21/09/2012 21:33

ooooh mrsusain that is sweet...how do you do that link thing?

NellyJob · 21/09/2012 21:34

can you put a family of goats crossing a bridge next please?

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 21:34

It is totally wrong. NMW should be much, much higher.

As for life not being free: Why not? It's free for most animals isn't it (other than the ones we've selfishly put to our use)?
If I have to work hard for pittance in order that rich amoral cretins get richer and richer, well I shall bow out now. Well, I would if MN was my life! I do actually feel almost suicidal.

I must have a nice face or something, because my rl friends and acquaintances are very kind to me :)

sirboobs :( that's really sad.

This is another reason why the OP is annoying me so much. Some people have no choice but to live on benefits, like my stepdad when he was ill.

It does actually give genuine good people on benefits a bad name.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 21/09/2012 21:36

well done for using the word cretins.

Another INCITE A ROW box ticked.

GoldShip · 21/09/2012 21:37

It's free for animals oh my good god have you just said that?

Grow your own food then! Drink from local ponds! Live in a tent! Then life will be free. Do it!

'Rich immoral cretins'. Erm... Those 'cretins' are putting food in your mouth and paying for your Internet.

You need to learn and learn quick.

You are nothing more than a leech on society. Sucking it dry because you can.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 21:37

No Littlemiss, no one has advised me on the home losing thing! The work programme staff don't have knowledge in that area; they're more like recruitment agents.

But I think it's right that I won't be worse off if I can get tax credits and work withing walking distance.

OP posts:
GoldShip · 21/09/2012 21:38

And you keep side stepping the point. You don't have to work for profit companies. So then you wouldn't be putting money in people's pockets.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 21:40

"I see what you are saying littlemiss but why cant op work two jobs if need be? "

Pumpkin - because need doesn't be! That's the point.

amillionyears · 21/09/2012 21:43

BS,you are using and thinking about rich people, just as an excuse. Not even sure you believe it.

You said further up that "I am trying to justify not working".

But in your heart of hearts, you are not really managing that are you?

Do you think you get anxiety because you are not really being true to yourself?

Rowanhart · 21/09/2012 21:44

Glad you've enjoyed yourself Op. I'm sure your friends would be thrilled with your dismissive attitude towards other human beings and their difficulties.

I work really hard and we almost lost our home last year when DH was made redundant. Hardly rich, but keeping people like you.

Now go and play with your paints pretending to be an artist. As believe me you won't have benefits much longer the way things are going. Smile

The downside of that is that genuine people will suffer because of people like you.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 21:45

But I can't get work within walking distance that is not bar work - and that's very definitely working for amoral profiteers.

OP posts:
SirGOLDBoobs · 21/09/2012 21:45

You're a twat. Needs be, but you can't be arsed.

I'm so glad you have time for your hobbies whilst people like me are spending nights terrified about our DLA being cut. I'm so glad you don't feel that you "have" to work whilst I take endless pain killers each day, and get looked down on for not having a job. I'm so glad that you won't consider a job outside of walking distance, whilst those of us that physically cannot walk more than 10m unaided or without agonizing pain are stuck with no option but to rely on benefits.

You selfish, selfish fool.

littlemisssarcastic · 21/09/2012 21:45

I don't think people who work are crazy, honestly.
I suppose I was just ranting a bit. Apologies.

OP, I am not sure how MW could be raised substantially without it affecting so many other things as to make the rise virtually worthless tbh.

If I lived in Utopia, I'd like to see a lot of things, MW increased, housing costs brought down, so that people could live reasonably well on MW.

I think there is something wrong with the system where a couple can both work full time for MW and still need govt top ups in the form of tax credits/housing benefits.

Surely the point of working for the absolute minimum should mean that there is not the need for govt assistance to pay rent/top up income, and although the people on MW may not be able to afford many luxuries, they should at least on MW be able to afford the basics, such as a roof over their head, food, heating etc without needing further support from the govt to do so because housing/cost of living is so high?

Alas, we don't live in Utopia. Sad

GoldShip · 21/09/2012 21:46

Benefit - who is your Internet provider? Why are you paying for it? I thought you didn't like giving money to 'immoral profiteers'

littlemisssarcastic · 21/09/2012 21:48

OP But I can't get work within walking distance that is not bar work - and that's very definitely working for amoral profiteers.

Ever heard of the saying "Beggars can't be choosers."?

Happilymarried155 · 21/09/2012 21:48

Benifit scrounger, your a disgrace. Get off your arse, get some self respect and work for a living like rest of us do!

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 21:48

amillion - yes I am trying to justify not working because whenever I do work I go a bit weird and can't go out suddenly. Why I ended up working as 'd' before and I'm certainly not doing that again.
Although I get tempted at times because it allows for 'weirdness'. Then I remember all the downsides. Which are extremely DOWN.

Internet provider, companies who designed the software, hardware... you may not like it, but profit making companies make the world go round.
