To be scared of getting a job in case I'm worse off?

NC and prepared for a flaming.

I've been claiming JSA for over two years now and am on the Work Programme. I have no qualifications and all I could get (I think) is a minimum wage job. I have been lying about my attempts to get work because I think I am better off out of work.

At the moment I get full housing benefit plus council tax, free dental care/prescriptions (if I need them) and £71 a week to live on. My bills aren't covered obviously, but they're not huge, and I have lots of free time to indulge hobbies etc.. I don't feel the need to buy stuff very often as I'm not into fashion/beauty and I eat cheaply. I can afford to eat out once a week with a TasteCard. The only thing I miss is holidays abroad but I'm not sure I would be able to afford them if I got a job anyway.

If I got a full time minimum wage job, would I be worse off? Just thinking of travel expenses, student loan repayment and time lost - not sure if I would still get any council tax benefit?

Has anyone had experience of this? By the way, I'm childless and live alone.

Grin at Silence of the lambs Grin

I was disturbed by the bats. DD was disturbed as well as we live next to a graveyard and was spooked.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 14:33

I suppose I'm trying to justify not working because I don't have the mental health issues that affect the people on DLA, but I do have some, so am on JSA. I don't know anymore.

I had a feeling they would - don't suppose you can litter train them.

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:34

i'm rather enjoying this thread btw

it's a welcome distraction from the fact the plumber has been, turned off the water supply to the hot taps, and 'gone for parts'

an hour ago Hmm

ImASpecialSnowflake · 21/09/2012 14:35

UnChartered your cat seriously brought in a moth like that? Shock

Didn't even realise we had moths like that in this country! Did it survive?

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 21/09/2012 14:35

Gone for parts.

Gone dahn the pub I bet. Grin

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:36

yup

yeah, cheeky bugger will be knocking back a swift one no doubt

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 21/09/2012 14:37

I can't stand moths. Talking of things I can't believe actually live in the UK look at these fuckers and lol at the fact they are called cockchafers

And someone on MN told me that spiders in the UK BITE HUMANS and since then I have been doubly scared of the things.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 14:38

Am I posting on the wrong topic?

cockchafers are reet scary!

they swoop right close to your head and scare the bejeebers out you while camping in Norfolk

maddening · 21/09/2012 14:39

You've got all this time to yourself so go work it out for yourself or are you too feckless?

You could do ironing services in your own home so you don't have to inflict yourself on other people? Could be a win win and you don't have to give up your daytime tv hobbies

Ullena · 21/09/2012 14:40

My DH was bitten by a spider whilst we were spring cleaning this year! He now insists that they are all murderous...but still has to deal with them as I run away screaming Grin

pointybird · 21/09/2012 14:41

"Nikola Tesla recalls that as a child he made one of his first "inventions" ? an "engine" made by harnessing four cockchafers together"
They knew how to have fun in those days!

LonelyCloud · 21/09/2012 14:41

The black widow is the only spider native to the UK with a poisonous bite.

But, you do hear about tropical poisonous spiders escaping from zoos or hitchhiking into the UK on bunches of bananas from time to time.

LonelyCloud · 21/09/2012 14:42

pointybird - do you know how he managed to catch and harness the cockchafers without injuring them???

UnChartered · 21/09/2012 14:42

how the actual fuck do you harness 4 cock chafers together Grin

Proudnscary · 21/09/2012 14:43

I am fooking crazy about my cat.

I love it when he rolls on to his back with his front and back paws crossed over in a 'aren't I the cutest thing that ever lived?' pose. Yes you are the cutest thing that ever lived you lovely little fluffy ball of gorgeousness.

Proudnscary · 21/09/2012 14:43

Shit, I just wrote my brains

TheGoldenKnid · 21/09/2012 14:44

My dad used to work on the 'banana boats' bringing bananas from South America to Europe. Apparently he had a collection of venomous spiders they found in the bananas.

pointybird · 21/09/2012 14:44

Not sure LonelyCloud, personally I would set a trail of Haribos

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 21/09/2012 14:45

Don't worry.

My cats are my BABIES.

I speak in special voices to them and say 'come to mummy'. My dd is their sister.

BenefitScrounger · 21/09/2012 14:45

I don't have a tv.

THE BLACK WIDOW IS NATIVE TO THE UK?

It can't be. You are making it up. I thought they lived in jungles.

CreepyWeeBrackets · 21/09/2012 14:46

DLA is not an out of work benefit neither is it your doctor's decision to award or not. It is paid on top of, not as an alternative to JSA or to working people if they qualify for it.

Many politicians and journalists are also incapable of understanding this.

starfishmummy · 21/09/2012 14:46

So you didn't bother to finish your degree and you can't be bothered to find a job.......

Enjoy your miserable life.
