To think this is irresponsible?

I'm watchings one born every minute:plus size about morbidly obese pregnant women. I'm Shock and Sad at the same time!
I get that most people do really want kids but sometimes there are circumstances where it is dangerous and irresponsible to do so.
The thing is being morbidly obese isn't a lifetime affliction, it can be changed by living a healthy life style and dropping weight.
A young woman on it is 21 stone and had to attend a clinic because her being pregnant was so dangerous. She was aware of the symptoms, but is smiling and telling the nurse she snacks all the time. Surely you wouldn't do this given the circumstances.
I'm in no means perfect I was a size 16 when I fell pregnant with my DD (unexpected) but when researching the risks I changed my lifestyle through diet and exercise and lost weight.
I understand it is hard when you are overweight to get the motivation to change. But if your morbidly obese why would you risk your health and your baby's. Why not try and lose weight before trying?

And I'm not talking about just being overweight, I mean morbidly obese like the women on the programme before I get told off. Blush

I don't think anyone would choose to be morbidly overweight, even if it is something they can do something about.

They obviously have quite serious issues if they are morbidly overweight so I wouldn't necessarily expect pregnancy to be a magic bullet for curing those issue.

SirGOLDBoobs · 20/09/2012 22:27

I think people underestimate how much their weight can affect their health in the long term. And that by becoming pregnant, their health affects the babies.

GoldShip · 20/09/2012 22:28

Because not everyone tries for a baby. Some people do get pregnant accidentally.

And to be honest they're hardly massive.

I'm a bit sad about the way they're being treated really. No woman should dread going to the hospital for her natal appointments. She does because they keep going on about her weight. I think that's really sad and as someone wanting to be a midwife, I'd feel I'd let her down

pumpkinsweetie · 20/09/2012 22:30

But did she 'try' for the baby?, or was getting pregnant an accident?
If she actually chose to get pregnant then i agree to some degree with what you are saying, but if she didn't then it isn't easy to give up eating especially when pregnant.
I suppose it also depends on whether she is capable of looking after the baby if mobility issues are a problem for her.
Once baby is born maybe she will change her ways and all the nightfeeds, pram walks etc might actually help towards her losing weight.
Food is an addiction, an addiction to something you 'need' every day must be harder than any other addiction as you need food to live unlike any other addiction in life so we can't judge until weve been there i suppose.

ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:31

I know, I do feel sorry for the situation they are in. I have been there before (albeit not as big so i dont know how hard it must be for them) I know it's hard to face up to the reality and make them changes. But if you do fall pregnant accidentally, wouldnt you try to make small changes like eliminating snacks from your diet for the sake of your health?

TeaDr1nker · 20/09/2012 22:32

I am not watching but see enough obese women in my antenatal clinic. IMO I think people are in denial as to how big they are. When I discuss diet most say they eat healthy but then I discuss portion size, I think a lot of people do not know about portion size. I also suspect people subconsciously eat.

ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:34

I suppose you could see it this way if you smoke when pregnant it can greatly increase the risks to your baby so most people give up. If you are morbidly obese you greatly increase the risks of preeclampsia so logic would be to at least try and be healthier? Maybe I'm totally wrong Confused

BlackberryIce · 20/09/2012 22:34

I'm watching it too

Think there is one,Ann, who has managed to maintain her weight. Not put loads on

ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:35

I think the women on it all said the tried for their baby.

Fakebook · 20/09/2012 22:35

I don't know. Are you saying fat people shouldn't have babies? I think that's a bit unfair, as overcoming a food addiction is hard.

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 20/09/2012 22:36

I think changing your diet in pregnancy to lose weight is sort of irresponsible as well. Eliminating snacks would have killed me because I had horrible morning sickness and had to snack all the time. I lost weight anyway you can guess why in the first trimester but the snacks were essential. I think that focusing on their weight, instead of on their health, is foolish. They won't get thin in pregnancy but they might start eating fruit, vegetables and the like and lose the caffeine and so on.

ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:36

Yeah I saw her just now (after i wrote the post) she was really trying hard. Good on her Smile.

ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:38

fakebook no I'm not saying that, as I said I was fat when I had my dd. I'm talking about the morbidly obese ones (over 20 stone). The two main women have both had really bad problems with their pregnancy.

OP posts:
ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:38

I was referring to the programme there.

5madthings · 20/09/2012 22:39

I am watching this as well. One womad had lost over twenty stone to get preg! Thats bloody fantastic and an amazing achievement!

Another managed her weight and didnt gain during pregnancy, she just gave birth to 'charlie' and saw the preg as a chance to change her eating habits and did so.

I think you are talking about the blonde mum who is having her srcond baby?! She does seem.to have a blase attitude but you can tell she us emmbarrassed and concerned about her baby. She now has pre-eclampsia and was obviously upset.

I think she seems like she is trying to be jokey about her weight. and she is having regular antenatal care so beingbresponsible.

Why is it dangerous and irresponsible? Are you saying they shouldnt have babies?! Yes there are more risks but they are being responsible and having appropriate care etc.

BlackberryIce · 20/09/2012 22:39

Now, this Lucy, she could die! (dvt) it's a real worry

The other one is being induced early with pre eclampsia worries

Then there's talk of hoists to lift these women, gestational diabetes and problems with anaesthetic

Yes op, I think it IS irresponsible

ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:40

mrsterry I was advised to by doctors. I didn't change my diet so much just ate healthier ensured I didn't over consume calories and went swimming (gentle exercise) and the extra weight I was carrying eventually started to go.

OP posts:
TeaDr1nker · 20/09/2012 22:40

It is about snacking on healthy food, not giving up snacks. We do not advise weight loss in pregnancy but to try to maintain your weight as oppse to gaining weight. It is very hard to be frank to a woman without offending but how would you say it? I never really know but state the facts if someone has a raised BMI and associated risks.

5madthings · 20/09/2012 22:44

Lucy is the one that lost all the weight to get pregnant and seems determined to lose it again after the baby is born. listening to her talking she has had weight issues since she was a young child ie six yrs old. Surely her parents were partly responsible at that age? Sounds like she had an awful time as a teen :(

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 20/09/2012 22:46

Yes I think it's irresponsible.

If you find out you're pregnant and continue to eat far more calories/ wrong food etc and you know the risks-it's selfish and irresponsible.

Just as many mums to be cut out alcohol/cigarettes because of the damage they can cause. Eating ridiculous amounts just because you are pg is something I don't understand.

The mums do seems lovely though and I'm sure they'll be fantastic mums. Just silly that they don't seem to be doing anything about their or their baby's health.

Vickles · 20/09/2012 22:47

Yes, YABU!

5madthings · 20/09/2012 22:49

The blonde one having her baby, no pain relief not even gas and air! Little boy, aww!

ShavingPrimateRyan · 20/09/2012 22:51

He is so tiny and dinky Smile bless!

OP posts:
5madthings · 20/09/2012 22:51

boys out of the three only one seemed to have an 'eat whatever' attitude. One didnt gain any weight and the other lost over twenty stone to get pregnant, not irresponsible she must have worked bloody hard to do that!
