AIBU to think you only need to pick up dog poo....

... where there is less than a one in a million chance of someone actually stepping in it?

I know I'm probably opening myself up to a flaming here but.....

I have taken great pains to train my dogs to poop way off the beaten track, under bushes etc etc. Plastic bags are an environmental hazard, as is incinerating dog waste. Dog waste itself is a natural biodegradable product, and in only a problem if it gets stepped in. So while I pick up and dispose of my dogs' droppings if they go near paths, on greens or anywhere else I think there's a chance someone will step in it, I don't if I consider where they go to be 'safe'.

Today, Large Dog was doing her thing on an overgrown bit of grass, past which was a ditch and a fence, a good 1.5m from the footpath. This was not a bit of ground that I would expect anyone ever to be walking on. So I didn't pick it up.

A lady driving past stopped and gave me a bollocking for not picking it up, and shot back a sarcastic "Oh really?" when I said plastic bags aren't environmentally friendly and no-one was likely to step in it. Um, yes, really.

So, AIBU to not pick up dog poop in pedestrian-unlikely places?

Of course you are being unreasonable.

YouOldSlag · 20/09/2012 18:55

YABU. Kids like exploring and going off the beaten track too you know.

CaliforniaLeaving · 20/09/2012 18:55

YABU even if it's a spot you wouldn't walk in/through, chances are someones kid will wander into the long grass.

surroundedbyblondes · 20/09/2012 18:56

I think it really depends where it is. You'd be surprised the kind of places kids go off 'exploring'

BananaBubbles · 20/09/2012 18:57

YABVU.

surroundedbyblondes · 20/09/2012 18:57

X post!

YouOldSlag · 20/09/2012 18:57

And don't pull that environmental crap- dog shit is toxic and can blind or poison children and adults. Use bio degradabble bags if your conscience bugs you.

scampadoodle · 20/09/2012 18:59

YAB so so so U.

Dog poo is foul stuff. You want a dog? You clean up after it. If you don't like it, tough.

SchrodingersMew · 20/09/2012 18:59

The places that most people are not likely to walk in are probably the places young kids would rather go to.

Also, yuck.

EverybodysCryEyed · 20/09/2012 18:59

Yabvu

My dd constantly makes breaks for the long grass and the bit if soil under the trees on the pavement so she would undoubtedly walk right through it

You might think it is off the beaten track but it probably isnt

SchrodingersMew · 20/09/2012 19:00

And you could re-use paper shopping/sandwich bags if you want to be more enviornmentally friendly.

Yabvu it is your job to clean up your dogs poo.

FatherHankTree · 20/09/2012 19:02

You've written unlikely, rather than impossible, so YABU. DD often wandered off as a toddler and used to come back with dog crap on her wellies, knees, etc.

I always pick up after HankDog, as dogs and young kids both seem to like rolling in the long grass.

12ylnon · 20/09/2012 19:02

YABU we live on the Ashdown Forest and a lot of people have the same attitude as you. I've lost count of the times DS has stepped in a dog egg whilst exploring...
If you're worried about the environmental aspect of the bags, naty do biodegradable nappy bags, or supermarkets do compostable bags for kitchen compost bins.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 20/09/2012 19:02

My children like to explore all kinds of hedges and out of the way areas...I don't want them stepping in or falling in your dog's shit.

YABVU.

If I saw you I'd let you know too.

sleepysox · 20/09/2012 19:03

That's disgusting. You are vvv unreasonable.

TheCalmingManatee · 20/09/2012 19:03

I really think it depends where! If i take my dogs out the woods and they do a poo off the track then i don't pick it up. I am always incredulous to see the dog poo bins, overflowing with plastic bags full of poo, in the woods FFS? What about the fox poo?? Of course i pick it up if there is a chance that someone might step in it, but there are places that people just don't walk. If its under a bush by a path though i tend to pick up.

I think its all about using one's common sense

EnjoyGOLDResponsibly · 20/09/2012 19:03

Large dog = large shite

You've been busted, now pick up in future.

If you have a problem with bags get a plastic box and empty it when you get home.

Meglet · 20/09/2012 19:03

totally fucking unreasonable! Shock

My DC's tear around everywhere. Long grass, off the beaten track or not.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 20/09/2012 19:03

AND dog poo has dangerous crap in it which can blind kids. So stop being lazy and dirty.

BigFatLegsInWoolyTIghts · 20/09/2012 19:04

manatee when we go to the woods...my kids go exactly where you let your dogs crap. OFF THE TRACK. So stop being disgusting and pick it up!

EnjoyGOLDResponsibly · 20/09/2012 19:04

And to my certain knowledge foxes don't have owners walking along behind them that should pick up.

diabolo · 20/09/2012 19:04

Children love wandering off the beaten track, into long grass next to footpaths - so YABU. If you can get to where your dog craps, you should pick it up. I do. It's not difficult.

pictish · 20/09/2012 19:04

Yabu and a total minger.
People don't just walk on the path you know. Kids run all over place...under bushes and all sorts.
Pick up after your dog!
