AIBU to think you only need to pick up dog poo....

... where there is less than a one in a million chance of someone actually stepping in it?

I know I'm probably opening myself up to a flaming here but.....

I have taken great pains to train my dogs to poop way off the beaten track, under bushes etc etc. Plastic bags are an environmental hazard, as is incinerating dog waste. Dog waste itself is a natural biodegradable product, and in only a problem if it gets stepped in. So while I pick up and dispose of my dogs' droppings if they go near paths, on greens or anywhere else I think there's a chance someone will step in it, I don't if I consider where they go to be 'safe'.

Today, Large Dog was doing her thing on an overgrown bit of grass, past which was a ditch and a fence, a good 1.5m from the footpath. This was not a bit of ground that I would expect anyone ever to be walking on. So I didn't pick it up.

A lady driving past stopped and gave me a bollocking for not picking it up, and shot back a sarcastic "Oh really?" when I said plastic bags aren't environmentally friendly and no-one was likely to step in it. Um, yes, really.

So, AIBU to not pick up dog poop in pedestrian-unlikely places?

What about my idea? You can have it to make up for the abuse.

AnnieLobeseder · 20/09/2012 20:38

Ha! See, that's two local councils who support me and even recommend flicking poop into the undergrowth!

Yum! Tequila! Thanks GetOrf.

Thanks Pickles. We have a sheepoopaper postcard up at work. Very cool.

My period is a natural and biodegradable product. Doesn't mean I'm going to go around smearing fanny blood all over the joint. Just because it's natural it doesn't mean it's pleasant.

Sorry, I don't want to be harsh. It's just that dog shit makes me dry wretch. I've had to wipe it off DS's wellingtons several times and it really is gross. I literally cannot stomach food for the rest of the day after dealing with Shit Boots. :(

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/09/2012 20:40

Annie there is even a poem.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/09/2012 20:41

Argh! Sockpuppet!

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/09/2012 20:41

Wow Annie - you've taken this so well Smile

Dog shit is vile though but at least you don't let your dog do its business on my driveway and leave it there for me to step in whilst wearing lovely leopard ponyskin shoes - that wasn't you was it Wink

AnnieLobeseder · 20/09/2012 20:41

Interesting analogy, sockpuppet. Confused.

For the record, I don't go smearing dog shit all over the joint either. Hmm

Ah, MrsC, I've been here too long to let a little flaming worry me. Grin Hide like a rhino, me.

The worst dog shit offence I saw was in the summer this year. Someone left a shit bag discarded on the pavement on my street and someone promptly rode over it with a bike. There was an exploded bag of dog shit arced across the path for about three weeks. Oh God I feel weird just typing about it. Envy

On the plus side, I don't want my Toffee Crisp any more Grin

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 20/09/2012 20:43

I used to have sword fights with sticks dipped in cow pats. It was great fun.

I think dog shit is really unpleasant, think it is the difference between stinky carnivore shite and benign herbivore shite.

Well who knew I would be literally talking shit this evening.

AnnieLobeseder · 20/09/2012 20:43

Umm MrsC, were your shoes actually made of leopards or ponies?

wannabedomesticgoddess · 20/09/2012 20:44

Oh sockpuppet. Period blood. In a dog poo thread. Really?

I agree that in popular areas it should be picked up.

But in woods you really are more likely to step in fox poo or similar and in the countryside cow or sheep poo. Its just life.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 20/09/2012 20:44

lol at the period blood smears on all the oak trees on country walks.

I am going to blow my nose in my hands and fling it on the floor in future, fuck hankies. Grin

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/09/2012 20:44

We used to enjoy throwing white dog poo at each other.

You don't get white ones in this day and age.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 20/09/2012 20:44

I'm going to rub my arse up my lawn to save on bog roll.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 20/09/2012 20:45

Toffee crisp!

At least it wasn't a Reece's Nutrageous (actually looks like a petrified dog turd)

onebigwish · 20/09/2012 20:45

"I think dog shit is really unpleasant, think it is the difference between stinky carnivore shite and benign herbivore shite."

yy to this.

obvioussockpuppet · 20/09/2012 20:47

Yes really. Just because something is "natural and biodegradable" it doesn't mean anyone else wants to encounter it, do they?

I don't give a shit about sheep shit Sheep eat hay/grass, so you are essentially stepping in digested hay/grass. Dog shit is evil. If someone said " a million quid to pick up fifty dog shits" I'd stay poor.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 20/09/2012 20:47

Well when I say benign I mean not as horrible dog shit.

In casea anyone thinks I am a bovine coprophile, what with the cowpat fight story and all. Grin

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 20/09/2012 20:47

Rabbit shit was good for fights as well.

I grew up in the country, there wasn't much to do.

hugoagogo · 20/09/2012 20:47

'Course you are Annie; 20 years ago no one picked up dog poo, and it was horrible.

It's a good thing that people pick it up form parks and foot paths, but it is way over the top and unnecessary, to do so off the beaten track. Natural processes (worms, bacteria and so on) mean the poo does not stay for that long, unlike the little bags of poo in landfill.Hmm

We should be teaching are children to be aware of the risks associated with playing out, not trying to make the country entirely risk free. imo

obvioussockpuppet · 20/09/2012 20:48

BovineCoprophile. There's your next namechange right there, GetOrf.

discrete · 20/09/2012 20:48

I think Yanbu.

I live in the middle of a forest in France and no-one picks up after their dogs here (and there are lots and lots of them).

It's no big deal. The children soon learn to avoid it.

There is also lots of shit from other animals around, which the dc have fun trying to identify.

And assuming OP worms her dogs regularly, it cannot make anyone blind.
